Chapter 5 - The WarehouseI drove faster than I should have.

Every instinct screamed at me to call the police.
I did.
But by the time I gave them the location, the line went silent.
No emergency confirmation.
No officer dispatched.
Nothing.
I called again.
A recorded message said the line was unavailable.
That was when I understood.
Someone had control.
Not just money.
Not just secrets.
People.
Systems.
I reached the warehouse twenty minutes later.
The red door from the photograph stood open.
Inside, the place smelled of rust and gasoline.
“Ryan!”
My voice echoed.
No answer.
I walked deeper.
A metal chair lay overturned.
A broken phone was on the concrete floor.
Ryan’s phone.
I knew the case.
My knees nearly gave out.
Then I heard a sound behind me.
I turned.
Daniel stepped from the shadows.
His shirt was stained with blood.
“Emily, get out.”
“Where is Ryan?”
“He’s alive.”
“Where?”
Daniel grabbed my shoulder.
“Listen to me. You came here alone?”
“Yes.”
“That was a mistake.”
“Where is my husband?”
Daniel looked toward the darkness.
“Taken.”
“By who?”
He didn’t answer.
“Daniel!”
“By people who have been waiting for this trust to activate.”
My heart pounded.
“You said Ryan knew.”
“He found out yesterday.”
“Then why did he warn me about you?”
“Because I told him to.”
“What?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I needed him to scare you away from this place.”
“You lied to him?”
“I was trying to keep you alive.”
Suddenly, headlights appeared outside.
Daniel shoved me behind a stack of crates.
Three black SUVs entered the loading area.
Doors opened.
Men stepped out.
One of them was Patricia.
I stopped breathing.
She was not afraid.
She walked into the warehouse as if she owned it.
“Where is she?”
Daniel said nothing.
Patricia looked directly at the crates.
“Come out, Emily.”
I stayed still.
“You were always smarter than I expected.”
I heard footsteps.
Then another voice.
Madison.
“She’s here.”
My blood ran cold.
Patricia smiled.
“You see, Emily, this is what happens when people refuse to listen.”
I stepped out.
“What do you want?”
Patricia’s smile disappeared.
“The key.”
I touched my pocket.
“The key to what?”
“The Hawthorne vault.”
I stared at her.
“There’s no such thing.”
She laughed.
“Your father told you that?”
“My father never told me anything.”
“Exactly.”
She walked closer.
“Do you know what your wedding really was?”
I felt sick.
“A wedding.”
“No.”
She leaned toward me.
“It was an acquisition.”
My stomach twisted.
“What?”
“The moment you married Ryan, the final condition of the trust was satisfied.”
I shook my head.
“My birthday isn’t for four months.”
Patricia smiled.
“You misunderstand the document.”
Daniel whispered, “Emily, don’t listen to her.”
Patricia snapped her fingers.
Two men dragged someone into the warehouse.
Ryan.
His hands were tied.
His face was bruised.
I screamed.
“Ryan!”
He looked at me.
His eyes filled with fear.
Not fear for himself.
Fear for me.
“Emily!”
Patricia smiled.
“There. Now we can finally talk about the money.”
Ryan shouted:
“Don’t give her the key!”
Patricia turned toward him.
“Too late.”
May you like
Then she pulled out a gun.
And pointed it at his head.
