Chapter 12 - The city changed in less than sixty seconds.Traffic lights synchronized.

Security gates opened.

Bank vaults unlocked.

Police radios transmitted false orders.

Hospital systems redirected patients.

Thousands of people stopped whatever they were doing.

The network was responding to Sophie.

She stood in the middle of the safehouse.

Still.

Silent.

Her eyes unfocused.

Then she collapsed.

Elena caught her.

I looked at Adrian.

“What did she do?”

He was staring at the screens.

“Nothing.”

“Then why did everything change?”

“Because she didn't command them.”

He looked terrified.

“They commanded themselves.”

I didn't understand.

Then the television turned on.

Every channel displayed the same emergency alert.

A woman's face appeared.

Dr. Evelyn Vale.

“Citizens of Chicago,” she said.

“This city has been part of an experiment for thirty years.”

She spoke calmly.

No panic.

No apology.

She explained nothing.

Instead, she gave one instruction.

“Bring us Subject A-07.”

The message repeated.

Across the city.

Then all screens turned black.

Adrian looked at me.

“They know where she is.”

“How?”

“The network.”

“Can we destroy it?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Kill the original server.”

“Where?”

He closed his eyes.

“Your father's house.”

I stared at him.

“My father's estate was demolished.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“That's what they told everyone.”

“Where is it?”

He whispered the location.

Lake Geneva.

I remembered the place.

My father had called it a summer home.

He hadn't allowed anyone to go there.

Not even me.

We left immediately.

Two cars.

No phones.

No modern navigation.

Just paper maps and weapons.

Sophie remained asleep in Elena's arms.

Theo, Miles and Nora slept in the rear.

For the first time, they looked peaceful.

That frightened me more than their screaming.

Because now I understood.

Their crying had never been random.

They had sensed the network.

They had been reacting to it.

The nursery wasn't haunted.

It was broadcasting.

Something had been calling them.

We reached the estate at noon.

The house looked abandoned.

No guards.

No cameras.

No electricity.

Adrian walked to the front door.

“There's no point searching upstairs.”

He stepped onto the porch.

“My father built it underneath.”

We entered through the basement.

A staircase descended far deeper than any normal foundation.

At the bottom was a steel vault.

The door opened with my fingerprint.

Inside was a room filled with old photographs.

My family.

Again.

But this time there were four children.

Me.

Adrian.

Sophie.

And someone else.

A boy.

I stared.

“Who is that?”

Adrian's face changed.

“Our youngest brother.”

“I thought there were only two of us.”

“There were three.”

“What happened?”

“He was the original control subject.”

I stared at the photograph.

“What was his name?”

Adrian whispered:

“Lucian.”

My heart stopped.

Lucia.

The name wasn't random.

My wife's name had been chosen for a reason.

I looked at the next photograph.

Lucia standing beside Lucian.

She was smiling.

Pregnant.

Suddenly everything connected.

My wife wasn't simply part of the project.

She was a descendant of the original line.

The triplets were created from two compatible genetic branches.

And Sophie was the control.

But why did Lucia fake her death?

Adrian pointed toward a monitor.

“There.”

A live feed.

Lucia.

Real this time.

She was sitting in a room inside the underground facility.

No restraints.

No guards.

She looked directly into the camera.

Then she stood.

Walked toward the door.

And opened it.

She walked into the server room.

She was holding a pistol.

My heart slammed.

“She's going to destroy it.”

Adrian shook his head.

“No.”

“What?”

“She knows what happens if the server dies.”

“What?”

He looked at me.

“The command will transfer.”

“To who?”

He stared at Sophie.

“Whoever is closest.”

I looked at the little girl.

Then at the babies.

I realized the truth.

The project had designed redundancy.

If one subject was lost, another inherited control.

Theo.

Miles.

Nora.

Sophie.

Four potential keys.

I turned toward the screen.

Lucia lifted the pistol.

She aimed at the server.

Then she looked into the camera.

“Adrien.”

I moved closer.

Her voice came through the speakers.

“I never stopped loving you.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“But I need you to understand.”

She looked at the children.

“I didn't fake my death to leave you.”

She pointed the gun at the server.

“I did it because they were going to use you.”

Then she whispered:

“I'm sorry.”

She pulled the trigger.

The server exploded.

Every light in the underground facility died.

Sophie screamed.

Theo, Miles and Nora began crying.

Then the world went completely black.

And somewhere in the darkness, a man's voice laughed.

May you like

My father's voice.

“Perfect.”
