Chapter 14 - THE LAST DOORWe returned to my parents' house.

The police surrounded it.
Every room was searched.
Nothing.
Then Zoe pointed toward the fireplace.
“Mommy.”
“What?”
“That wall moves.”
I stared.
She was right.
A panel shifted when she touched the stone.
Behind it was a narrow staircase.
We went down.
At the bottom was a steel door.
The key from my grandfather's pocket fit perfectly.
Inside was a vault.
Not money.
Not gold.
Files.
Boxes.
Photographs.
And one envelope marked:
FOR CLARA ONLY.
I opened it.
My grandfather's final letter began:
Clara,
You have been told your whole life that you were unwanted.
That was the lie.
You were the most important person in this family.
Not because of money.
Because you were the only person who could end it.
I kept reading.
The Walker fortune was built on legitimate businesses.
But after my health deteriorated, your father partnered with Judge Hale.
They diverted funds.
Your mother discovered it.
She planned to expose them.
That was when they tried to kill her.
She survived.
She disappeared.
And your father took you.
My hands shook.
Then came the final truth.
There is no second inheritance.
The money is only leverage.
The real asset is the Walker Foundation.
Control of the foundation gives access to records proving corruption across the county.
That was why they wanted me.
Not for the money.
For the records.
My grandfather had stored evidence of decades of corruption.
Judges.
Police chiefs.
Business leaders.
Politicians.
My father had helped build the network.
Hale had protected it.
My mother had tried to destroy it.
And now I had everything.
Then a sound came from behind us.
Clap.
Clap.
Clap.
Judge Hale stepped from the darkness.
“You finally found it.”
Police drew their weapons.
Hale smiled.
“You think arresting me ends this?”
Daniel raised his gun.
“Drop it.”
Hale looked at me.
“Your grandfather was wrong about one thing.”
“What?”
“You aren't the only heir.”
He pointed toward Zoe.
“She is.”
I stepped in front of my daughter.
“You're not touching her.”
Hale laughed.
“I don't need to.”
He pressed a button.
Every light in the house went out.
Then every police radio went dead.
Windows shattered.
People screamed upstairs.
Hale smiled.
“You still think this is a family problem.”
He stepped backward.
“It isn't.”
The vault door slammed shut.
I heard metal locking.
We were trapped.
Then smoke began pouring through the vents.
Zoe coughed.
I screamed.
“Help!”
No answer.
I grabbed the documents.
Daniel pulled at the door.
It wouldn't move.
Then Elena noticed something.
A small red light blinking beneath the desk.
“A camera.”
I looked into it.
“Who's watching?”
The camera screen turned on.
My father's face appeared.
He was sitting in a police interrogation room.
But he was smiling.
Then he said:
“You have ten minutes.”
“Until what?”
He leaned toward the camera.
“Until the entire county finds out who Clara Walker really is.”
The screen changed.
A document appeared.
My birth record.
And beneath my name was a line I had never seen before.
Biological Father:
Richard Hale.
I stopped breathing.
May you like
Judge Hale wasn't just trying to steal Zoe's inheritance.
He was claiming to be my biological father.
