CHAPTER 4 The Man Who Vanished Into Thin Air

The scream still echoed beneath the crystal chandeliers.
For one surreal moment, no one moved.
Then chaos erupted.
Guests ducked beneath tables.
Security guards drew their weapons.
Champagne flutes shattered as people rushed toward the exits.
Someone shouted,
"Lock every door!"
The ballroom transformed from a celebration into a crime scene in less than ten seconds.
I didn't move.
I was staring at the empty space where Richard Ashford had been standing.
His chair had overturned.
His glass lay broken on the floor.
There was one fresh drop of blood.
Nothing else.
No body.
No footprints.
No struggle.
Just...
Gone.
The lead federal agent pressed a hand to his earpiece.
"Seal the building!"
"No one leaves!"
"Check every camera!"
Within seconds, armed agents flooded the ballroom.
The exits slammed shut.
Every guest was ordered to remain where they stood.
Victoria shoved through the crowd.
"This is insane!"
"My father has been kidnapped!"
One of the agents stopped her.
"Ma'am, please remain where you are."
She slapped his hand away.
"Do you know who I am?"
Before the argument could escalate, the General spoke.
"No."
His calm voice sliced through the noise.
"He wasn't kidnapped."
Every head turned.
"He walked away."
The room fell silent.
The agent frowned.
"General..."
"The doors never opened."
The General looked toward the enormous chandelier hanging above the ballroom.
"Because he didn't use the doors."
I followed his gaze.
There.
Barely visible between the steel beams supporting the ceiling...
A thin black cable.
Almost invisible against the shadows.
Professional extraction equipment.
Someone had rehearsed this.
Twenty minutes later...
The ballroom had become a federal command center.
Technicians pulled security footage from every camera.
Forensic teams dusted every surface.
I stood beside one of the monitors.
"Play it again."
The technician nodded.
The footage rolled.
Richard standing beside the stage.
The lights cutting out.
Three seconds of black screen.
Lights returning.
Richard gone.
The technician sighed.
"Nothing."
I leaned closer.
"Back two seconds."
He rewound.
Frame by frame.
One image caught my attention.
A reflection.
Not on the floor.
Inside the polished silver ice bucket beside the stage.
The camera hadn't seen movement.
The reflection had.
A shadow descending from above.
I pointed.
"There."
The technician enlarged the image.
A masked figure suspended from the ceiling.
Only visible for a fraction of a second.
The lead agent cursed under his breath.
"Professional."
The General folded his arms.
"No."
He stared at the frozen image.
"Military."
Meanwhile...
Two floors below...
Inside the hotel's underground service tunnels...
Richard Ashford was running.
Not stumbling.
Running.
His expensive shoes splashed through shallow water.
His breathing was controlled.
He knew exactly where he was going.
He reached an old steel door hidden behind electrical panels.
Three knocks.
Pause.
Two knocks.
The door opened.
A woman waited inside.
She wore plain black clothes.
Short dark hair.
No jewelry.
No expression.
"You're late," she said.
Richard entered quickly.
"They found him."
"I know."
"They've activated Meridian."
The woman's face remained unreadable.
"And Evelyn?"
Richard looked away.
"She knows nothing."
The woman studied him for a long moment.
"You still underestimate her."
Back upstairs...
Victoria sat alone.
Her hands trembled around a glass of water.
Someone quietly took the empty chair beside her.
Daniel.
Her younger brother.
He spoke without looking at her.
"Did you know?"
She frowned.
"Know what?"
"About Dad."
She laughed nervously.
"Of course not."
Daniel finally looked at her.
"I think you did."
Silence.
Victoria's fingers tightened.
"I knew..."
She whispered.
"...that he lied."
Daniel waited.
"I just didn't know how much."
Before he could respond...
A hotel employee approached.
"Miss Ashford?"
"Someone left this for you."
He handed her a small white envelope.
No stamp.
No name.
Only one sentence written across the front.
Your father has lied to you since the day you were born.
Victoria slowly opened it.
Inside...
A DNA report.
She stared.
Read it again.
Then a third time.
The color drained from her face.
Daniel reached for the paper.
"What is it?"
She jerked it away.
"No."
"Victoria?"
Tears filled her eyes.
"This..."
She could barely breathe.
"This can't be real."
At that exact moment...
I stood alone on the hotel balcony overlooking the city.
The General joined me.
"You knew he would escape."
"I suspected."
"You let him."
"I needed him to run."
The old man smiled faintly.
"So he'd lead us."
I nodded.
"To whoever he's been protecting."
The General was silent for a long time.
Finally he reached into his coat.
He removed a faded photograph.
It showed five people standing on the deck of a naval vessel.
One of them was my mother.
One was the General.
Three others had their faces scratched out.
He handed me the picture.
"Your mother trusted only four people."
His finger rested on the scratched-out faces.
"Three are dead."
He looked directly into my eyes.
"The fourth..."
"...is hunting us."
A sharp crack echoed across the balcony.
Instinct took over.
I grabbed the General's shoulder and threw both of us to the ground.
A high-powered sniper round tore through the glass behind us, missing the General's head by less than an inch.
The bullet embedded itself in the concrete wall.
Attached to it...
By a thin steel wire...
Was a tiny strip of paper.
I pulled it free.
Only five words were written on it.
