CHAPTER 11: THE ORIGINAL FILES

Patricia Wells did not want to meet at her home.
Claire understood why.
After hearing that Richard and Eleanor had already visited her house, nobody would feel safe there.
They arranged to meet at a quiet public library downtown.
A place filled with cameras, people, and witnesses.
Richard’s world depended on controlling private conversations.
Claire was learning to choose public spaces.
Places where the truth had room to breathe.
When Patricia arrived, Claire immediately noticed how nervous she looked.
She carried a small leather bag pressed tightly against her chest.
Not like someone carrying documents.
Like someone carrying something precious.
Something dangerous.
“Claire?”
“Yes.”
Patricia looked around before sitting down.
“Is Daniel here?”
“He’s parking the car.”
Patricia nodded.
“I’m glad.”
Claire noticed.
“You trust him?”
Patricia looked surprised.
“I trust him more than most people.”
“Why?”
“Because Richard hated him.”
Claire almost smiled.
“That’s becoming a strange compliment.”
Patricia gave a tired laugh.
“With Richard, it is.”
When Daniel arrived, Patricia placed the leather bag on the table.
“I need you both to understand something.”
Claire nodded.
“Okay.”
“These files are not just about money.”
Daniel looked serious.
“Then what are they about?”
Patricia opened the bag.
Inside were several folders.
Old papers.
USB drives.
Photographs.
A history of hidden actions.
“Richard kept records.”
Claire frowned.
“Of his own crimes?”
Patricia shook her head.
“Not exactly.”
She opened the first folder.
“He kept records of everyone.”
The sentence felt familiar.
Richard collected information.
He studied people.
He stored weaknesses.
But seeing physical proof made it different.
Inside the folder were names.
Dates.
Notes.
Personal details.
Claire’s stomach tightened.
“He made files on people?”
Patricia nodded.
“Employees. Partners. Friends.”
Daniel looked through the papers.
“He was preparing ways to control them.”
“Yes.”
Patricia looked at Claire.
“That was Richard’s greatest skill.”
“What?”
“He never attacked people directly.”
She tapped the documents.
“He found the thing that mattered most to them.”
The first file belonged to Michael Carter.
Inside were notes about his family.
His financial problems.
His fears.
His relationships.
Richard had studied him before destroying him.
The second file belonged to Andrew Wells.
The third belonged to Daniel.
Claire froze.
“Daniel.”
Her husband went silent.
Patricia looked apologetic.
“I’m sorry.”
Daniel picked up the file.
His expression changed as he read.
A list.
His career.
His previous employers.
His weaknesses.
Even information about Claire.
Claire felt anger rise.
“He was watching us?”
Patricia nodded.
“For years.”
“Why?”
“Because Richard never forgets people who challenge him.”
Daniel closed the folder.
“When did he create this?”
Patricia looked at the papers.
“Before you met Claire.”
Claire looked at Daniel.
A painful realization appeared.
Richard had known about him before their relationship even began.
“He knew who I was.”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked disturbed.
“He was waiting.”
Then Claire saw another folder.
A small one.
Yellow.
Her heart stopped.
Because she recognized the color.
The same yellow as Sophie’s backpack.
She slowly reached for it.
“What is this?”
Patricia looked at her.
“I don’t know.”
Claire opened it.
Inside was a single page.
At the top:
SOPHIE BELL
The room became silent.
Claire stopped breathing for a moment.
“No.”
Daniel immediately moved closer.
“What is it?”
Claire could not answer.
She stared at the page.
Notes.
Observations.
Dates.
Things Richard had noticed about Sophie.
Her school.
Her habits.
Her personality.
Claire’s hands began shaking.
“He made a file on my daughter.”
Patricia looked devastated.
“I didn’t know.”
Daniel took the paper.
His face changed.
A father’s anger.
A father’s fear.
“What kind of person does this?”
Nobody answered.
Because everyone already knew.
The notes were short.
Cold.
Clinical.
Sensitive. Easily influenced by authority figures.
Strong attachment to parents.
Avoids conflict.
Likely to apologize when pressured.
Claire felt sick.
Because Richard had studied Sophie.
Not as a child.
As a weakness.
“He planned this,” Claire whispered.
Daniel looked at her.
“What?”
“The party.”
She pointed at the notes.
“He knew exactly how she would react.”
Patricia nodded slowly.
“That’s what Richard does.”
“He creates situations where people behave exactly how he expects.”
Claire looked at the page.
Sophie running.
Sophie refusing the backpack search.
Sophie hiding.
Richard had predicted it.
And he used it.
Then Daniel found something.
A second page.
Hidden behind the first.
His face changed.
“Claire.”
She looked.
The page contained one sentence.
Objective: remove attention from investigation.
Below it:
Public family incident recommended.
Claire felt cold.
The bracelet.
The accusation.
The belt.
It was planned.
Not because Richard believed Sophie stole anything.
Because he needed everyone watching Sophie.
While he searched for something else.
“The meeting,” Daniel said.
Claire nodded.
“The meeting that morning.”
Patricia looked confused.
“What meeting?”
Claire explained.
Patricia listened.
Then her face changed.
“Wait.”
“What?”
“Richard wasn’t searching for the files that day.”
Claire frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“He already knew they existed.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“Then what was he searching for?”
Patricia became pale.
“Confirmation.”
“Confirmation of what?”
She looked at the folder.
Then whispered:
“He wanted to know who had copies.”
The answer hit them.
Richard did not need the original files.
He needed to find everyone who knew about them.
Michael.
Andrew.
Daniel.
Thomas.
And now Claire.
The birthday party was not a search.
It was a trap.
A way to force reactions.
A way to see who protected Sophie.
Who challenged him.
Who revealed themselves.
Claire suddenly understood.
Richard wanted a target.
But he also wanted information.
And when Claire stepped in front of Sophie…
When Daniel arrived…
When Thomas showed the video…
They had all revealed themselves.
They had shown Richard exactly who stood against him.
That evening, Claire returned home with a copy of Sophie’s file.
She could barely look at it.
Daniel sat beside her.
“We need to tell the police.”
Claire nodded.
“Yes.”
“But?”
She looked at him.
“But we need to understand one more thing.”
“What?”
Claire looked at the file.
“Why Sophie?”
Daniel was quiet.
“Because she was vulnerable?”
“No.”
Claire shook her head.
“Richard chose children before.”
Emily’s words returned.
Your daughter is not the first child he has used.
Claire stood.
She picked up her phone.
She called Emily.
Emily answered immediately.
“Claire?”
“I found Sophie’s file.”
Silence.
Then Emily whispered:
“He did it again.”
Claire’s heart tightened.
“What do you mean?”
A long pause.
Then Emily said:
“When I was young, he created a file on me too.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“How many children?”
Emily’s voice broke.
“I don’t know.”
The answer was terrifying.
Because it meant Richard’s behavior was not one mistake.
It was a system.
A habit.
A pattern repeated across years.
Claire looked at Sophie’s bedroom door.
Her daughter was asleep inside.
Safe.
For now.
But Claire knew something.
The fight was no longer about proving Richard was cruel.
They already knew.
Now they had to prove how far it went.
And somewhere in Richard Hale’s past…
There were other children.
May you like
Other stories.
Other voices waiting to be heard.
