Chapter 15 - Emma read the message three times. The words didn't change.

THE WOMAN YOU CALL MOTHER IS THE ENEMY.
For twenty years, she had believed her family was broken because her father left.
Then she learned Daniel had been protecting her.
Then she learned Vincent knew more than he admitted.
Then she discovered Julian was her brother.
Then that truth collapsed too.
Now everything she knew about her mother was falling apart.
Emma looked at the doorway.
“Where is Victoria?”
Julian shook his head.
“She wanted us to follow the trail.”
“The trail to what?”
“To Isabella.”
They returned to Emma's childhood home.
The house looked smaller than she remembered.
Julian searched the basement.
Emma went upstairs.
She opened the old music box again.
A second compartment had appeared.
Inside was a photograph.
Emma's mother was standing beside Marcus Carter.
They weren't smiling.
Behind them was an old warehouse.
Emma recognized it.
The original Moretti factory.
Underneath the photograph was a date.
June 18, 2004.
The day Marcus disappeared.
Emma's phone rang.
Isabella.
Emma answered.
“Where are you?”
A long pause.
Then her mother's voice.
“Come home.”
Emma swallowed.
“Why?”
“Because you deserve to know.”
She drove to the house alone.
Julian followed secretly.
Emma entered.
Isabella sat in the living room.
No guards.
No weapons.
Just an old woman staring at an old photograph.
Emma placed the photograph on the table.
“Who is Marcus?”
Isabella closed her eyes.
“Your father.”
Emma's heart broke.
“Why did you lie?”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“Of what happened after I killed him.”
Emma stared.
Victoria had told the truth.
“You killed him.”
Isabella nodded.
“I did.”
“Why?”
“He was going to expose me.”
“Expose what?”
Isabella looked toward the window.
“My real name is Elena Vasile.”
Emma frowned.
“Who is that?”
“The woman who inherited the Vasile criminal empire.”
Emma froze.
Isabella continued.
“My family controlled half of Chicago's underground economy.”
“I don't believe you.”
“You should.”
She opened an old drawer.
Inside were photographs.
Young Isabella.
Marcus.
Daniel.
Matthias.
Elias.
Vincent's father.
Everyone.
Together.
“We weren't enemies originally.”
Emma stared.
“We built Moretti Global together.”
“Then what happened?”
“Marcus stole from us.”
“Why?”
“To get you out.”
Emma stopped.
“Me?”
Isabella nodded.
“Marcus discovered that Elias planned to use you as leverage against the family.”
“He tried to protect me.”
“Yes.”
“And you killed him.”
“I thought he was betraying us.”
Tears filled Isabella's eyes.
“I was wrong.”
Emma whispered,
“Daniel knew.”
“Yes.”
“Why did he raise me?”
“Because he promised Marcus.”
Silence.
Emma finally understood.
Daniel had never been her biological father.
But he had chosen to be her father.
Isabella reached across the table.
“He loved you more than life itself.”
Emma pulled her hand away.
“What happened to him?”
“Victoria took him.”
“I know.”
“Then you're too late.”
Emma froze.
“What?”
Isabella looked toward the door.
“They're going to kill him.”
Emma ran.
Outside, black SUVs surrounded the house.
Julian appeared from behind one.
“Emma!”
A gunshot echoed.
Julian fell.
“Julian!”
Emma rushed toward him.
He was bleeding from the shoulder.
“I'm okay.”
He pointed toward the cars.
“Daniel is inside the factory.”
The original Moretti factory.
The place from the photograph.
Emma ran.
Inside, the building was dark.
She heard a heartbeat monitor.
Then Daniel's voice.
“Emma.”
She followed it.
At the center of the warehouse, Daniel was strapped to a chair.
Victoria stood behind him.
Beside Victoria stood a man Emma had never seen before.
Marcus Carter.
Older.
Alive.
Emma froze.
“No.”
The man smiled.
“I've been waiting for you.”
Daniel stared at Emma.
“Don't listen to him.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“I am your father.”
Emma couldn't breathe.
Victoria looked at him.
“You promised she would never know.”
Marcus smiled.
“Plans change.”
Emma stared at Daniel.
“Is he telling the truth?”
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
Emma's world shattered.
Marcus continued.
“Your mother killed me twenty-two years ago.”
“But you're alive.”
“Because Matthias rescued me.”
Emma looked at Daniel.
Daniel nodded.
“Marcus survived.”
“Then why didn't you tell me?”
“Because Marcus changed.”
Marcus laughed.
“I learned from the best.”
He pulled out the original ledger.
The full one.
The one everyone had been killing for.
“You own the company, Emma.”
Emma stared.
“The shares.”
“Yes.”
“But you want them.”
“No.”
Marcus smiled.
“I want something much more valuable.”
“What?”
He held up the ledger.
“Every powerful person in Chicago is inside this book.”
Emma understood.
Blackmail.
Control.
Power.
“You want to own the city.”
Marcus nodded.
“And you will help me.”
“No.”
Marcus smiled.
“Then Daniel dies.”
Victoria suddenly raised her weapon.
She aimed it at Marcus.
“No.”
Marcus turned.
Victoria fired.
The bullet struck his shoulder.
Chaos erupted.
Daniel fell sideways.
Emma rushed toward him.
Victoria cut the restraints.
“Get him out!”
“What about you?”
“Run!”
Emma pulled Daniel toward the exit.
Behind them, Marcus screamed.
Julian appeared.
Together they dragged Daniel outside.
Sirens approached.
Police.
Fire trucks.
The warehouse burned behind them.
For the first time in twenty-two years, the truth was no longer buried.
Marcus was arrested.
Victoria surrendered.
Elias and Matthias were dead.
The blackmail network collapsed over the following months.
Moretti Global survived.
But Emma changed it.
She refused to take Vincent's money.
Instead, she created a foundation in Isabella's name.
Daniel spent his remaining years quietly.
He never stopped apologizing.
Emma never stopped visiting him.
And Vincent?
He remained beside her.
Not as a billionaire.
Not as a powerful businessman.
Just as the man who had watched a waitress risk everything for a stranger.
One year later, Emma stood inside the ballroom where everything had begun.
The crystal chandeliers still glittered.
The same tables stood beneath them.
But the room felt different.
Isabella sat in the front row.
Daniel sat beside her.
Julian stood near the doors, finally free.
Vincent approached Emma.
“You ready?”
Emma smiled.
“Yes.”
“For what?”
She looked around the room.
“For the part of my life where nobody gets to decide who I am.”
Vincent smiled.
Then a waiter hurried toward them.
“Miss Carter.”
“Yes?”
He handed her a small envelope.
“There was no name on it.”
Emma opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Her entire family stood together.
But someone had been cut out.
On the back were four words.
HE IS STILL ALIVE.
Emma looked at Vincent.
His smile disappeared.
“What is it?”
She handed him the photograph.
His face went pale.
Because the person who had been cut out...
was Daniel.
And beneath his picture was a date.
Tomorrow.
Emma stared at the ballroom doors.
For one terrifying moment, she thought she saw a familiar silhouette standing outside.
Then it disappeared.
The music stopped.
The lights flickered.
And somewhere in the darkness, a man's voice whispered:
“Emma.”
She turned.
Nobody was there.
Except a second envelope lying on the floor.
She picked it up.
Inside was a single sentence.
You saved Isabella from the slap.
Now save her from the truth.
Emma looked toward her mother.
Isabella was crying.
Vincent whispered,
“Don't open the next one.”
Emma looked down at the envelope.
Then at the woman who had spent twenty years hiding the truth.
Then at the man she had called her father.
And finally at the darkness beyond the ballroom.
She opened it anyway.
May you like
Because the slap had never landed.
But the first blow had only just begun.
