Chapter 18 - The Wrong GirlI ran to the hospital.

The room was empty.

The bed was made.

The nurse said my daughter had been transferred.

Transferred?

By whom?

No one could answer.

Then I saw the security footage.

A woman carried a sleeping child out at 3:14 a.m.

The woman wore a nurse's uniform.

The child wore Emma's pink sweatshirt.

I replayed the footage.

The child's face was visible for half a second.

I zoomed in.

It was not Emma.

I felt like the floor vanished.

Then who had been in Emma's hospital room?

Lily found an answer.

“The girl they took wasn't your daughter.”

“Where is Emma?”

“We have to find her before they move her.”

We traced the security badge.

It belonged to a nurse who had died two years earlier.

A fake identity.

Another layer.

Another lie.

Then the police found a vehicle.

A black van.

It led us to an old farmhouse.

Inside we found three bedrooms.

One was empty.

One held old photographs.

The last contained a crib.

On the wall were drawings.

Two girls.

Emma.

Mia.

And a third child.

The name under the third child was:

Lily.

I turned.

“She's still doing it.”

Vanessa's name was on the wall.

But beneath it was another name.

Margaret.

My mother.

Then I heard a child crying.

I ran downstairs.

A little girl was hiding behind a wooden box.

I knelt.

“Emma?”

She looked at me.

Her eyes widened.

“Mommy.”

I grabbed her.

I knew her instantly.

Not from her face.

From the way she wrapped her arms around my neck.

From the tiny mole behind her ear.

My real Emma.

I kissed her hair.

“I'm sorry.”

She whispered:

“Daddy said not to tell.”

“Tell me what?”

She looked at the stairs.

“Grandma has Lily.”

My blood turned cold.

“Where?”

She pointed toward the basement.

Then said the words that shattered me.

“Grandma said Lily is inside Mommy.”

I didn't understand.

Then I remembered the old tape.

The repeated name.

The obsession.

The chair.

The photographs.

Lily wasn't just a person.

She was an identity.

A story my family had built around me.

My mother had spent years convincing Vanessa that she could become Lily.

And now…

She wanted Emma to become Rachel.

The cycle was continuing.

We found my mother in the basement.

She was holding a photograph of me as a child.

“Why?”

She smiled sadly.

“Because someone had to survive.”

“Why me?”

“Because you were the only one who could.”

“Could what?”

May you like

She touched my face.

“Remember.”
