Chapter Three: The Enemy Who Asked For Protection

THE RETURN OF THE SOVEREIGN
Chapter Three: The Enemy Who Asked For Protection
The airport was empty at 2:17 in the morning.
Not quiet.
Empty.
There was a difference.
Quiet meant people were still somewhere nearby.
Empty meant everyone had already left because something dangerous had arrived.
I knew that feeling.
I had walked into hundreds of places like this.
Abandoned warehouses.
Destroyed villages.
Underground facilities.
Rooms where people stopped talking the moment I entered.
But this time was different.
Because the person waiting for me was not a criminal commander.
Not a terrorist.
Not an enemy soldier.
It was Vanessa Vale.
The woman whose heel had been pressed against my daughter’s hand.
The woman wearing my husband’s robe.
The woman who looked at Lily and saw a problem instead of a child.
She sat alone inside a private terminal lounge.
No champagne.
No designer clothes.
No arrogant smile.
For the first time since I met her...
she looked afraid.
Real fear.
Not the kind people pretend to have.
The kind that changes the way they breathe.
Two agents stood beside the entrance.
Marcus walked beside me.
“You sure about this?”
I looked through the glass.
Vanessa was staring at the floor.
“No.”
Marcus raised an eyebrow.
“No?”
I opened the door.
“I’m sure about one thing.”
“What?”
“I don’t need to trust her.”
I walked inside.
“I only need to know what she knows.”
Vanessa immediately stood.
Her eyes locked onto mine.
And something strange happened.
She looked relieved.
Not because she saw me.
Because she saw someone powerful enough to protect her.
“Evelyn.”
Her voice was different.
No arrogance.
No sarcasm.
Just fear.
I stopped several feet away.
“You asked for protection.”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Her lips parted.
Then closed.
For a moment, she looked like she was fighting herself.
Finally, she whispered:
“Because Grant is dead.”
The room froze.
Marcus looked at me.
I didn’t move.
“Explain.”
Vanessa swallowed.
“Thirty minutes after the agents took him away, someone attacked the transport vehicle.”
My eyes narrowed.
“Where?”
“Near the courthouse.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
A pause.
“But they weren’t trying to rescue him.”
The silence became heavier.
“What happened to Grant?”
Vanessa looked away.
“They killed everyone inside.”
Marcus immediately touched his communication device.
“Confirming.”
He stepped away.
I stared at Vanessa.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“No.”
Her answer came instantly.
That surprised me.
“I know what you think.”
She looked down.
“You think I’m a monster.”
I said nothing.
Because she was right.
She looked at her own hands.
“I deserve that.”
The words caught me off guard.
People like Vanessa rarely admitted guilt.
People who lived in luxury usually built walls around their mistakes.
She continued.
“I didn’t know what Grant was involved in.”
A cold smile crossed my face.
“You expect me to believe you were innocent?”
“No.”
She looked at me.
“I expect you to believe I was stupid.”
That answer was more honest than I expected.
Vanessa sat down.
“I met Grant two years ago.”
I remained standing.
“He told me his marriage was already over.”
Her eyes lowered.
“He said you were obsessed with your career. That you barely came home. That Lily needed someone who was actually there.”
My jaw tightened.
“He showed me messages.”
“What messages?”
“Between you and him.”
My expression changed.
“What?”
“He edited them.”
A pause.
“He made it look like you didn’t care.”
Something inside me went cold.
Not anger.
Understanding.
A manipulation pattern.
Classic.
Isolate the target.
Control the information.
Create a false reality.
Grant hadn’t just cheated.
He had prepared the ground.
Vanessa continued.
“I believed him.”
She looked ashamed.
“I thought I was helping a man escape a broken marriage.”
“And then?”
“Then I moved into your house.”
Her voice became quieter.
“And I saw Lily.”
I waited.
“At first, I thought she was just a spoiled child.”
My eyes hardened.
“But she wasn’t.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“She was scared.”
A long pause.
“She would apologize every time she dropped something.”
I remembered the bruises.
“She would ask permission before eating.”
My hands tightened.
“She flinched whenever someone raised their voice.”
Vanessa looked at me.
“I thought it was because you were never home.”
The words hung between us.
Then she whispered:
“Then I realized it wasn’t you.”
“Who was it?”
She looked terrified.
“Grant.”
The room became silent.
“Grant started changing after joining the Sovereign Circle.”
She continued.
“He became obsessed with control.”
“Money wasn’t enough anymore.”
“He wanted influence.”
“He wanted power.”
My mind processed every detail.
“What did he do to Lily?”
Vanessa looked down.
“I was told to punish her.”
My eyes became colder.
“By who?”
She hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
“Vanessa.”
Her breathing became uneven.
“I never saw his face.”
“Whose?”
“The person who gave Grant orders.”
I stepped closer.
“Name.”
“I don’t know.”
“Then give me something.”
She looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw genuine fear.
“He called himself…”
She stopped.
“Say it.”
“The Sovereign.”
A chill moved through the room.
Not because of the name.
Because of the meaning.
The Sovereign was not a person.
It was a title.
A title passed through generations.
A ghost at the top of the organization.
Nobody knew the identity.
Nobody had ever seen the face.
But everyone knew the results.
Governments collapsed.
Companies disappeared.
People vanished.
All because someone gave an order.
Marcus returned.
His face was serious.
“Evelyn.”
I looked at him.
“It’s confirmed.”
My expression didn’t change.
“Grant?”
He nodded.
“Dead.”
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Even though she expected it.
Even though she knew.
Hearing it made it real.
Marcus continued.
“But there’s something else.”
“What?”
He handed me a small evidence bag.
Inside was a piece of paper.
A handwritten note.
My eyes moved across the words.
And every instinct I had immediately screamed.
Because the handwriting was familiar.
Too familiar.
The message said:
Evelyn,
You spent eight years protecting everyone else.
You never noticed the enemy sleeping beside you.
But don’t blame Grant.
He was only a soldier.
The real betrayal came from someone who taught you how to fight.
Come find me.
If you want the truth about your family.
At the bottom was a symbol.
A black crown.
And underneath it...
a name.
Not Grant.
Not Vanessa.
Not Adrian Cross.
Someone else.
Someone I thought had died twelve years ago.
My heart stopped.
Because the name belonged to the one person who knew every secret I had ever hidden.
The one person who knew the girl behind the soldier.
My older brother.
Nathan Vance.
The brother who disappeared.
The brother everyone believed was dead.
The brother whose death changed my entire life.
I looked up slowly.
Vanessa was watching me.
“You know that name.”
I didn’t answer.
Because I couldn’t.
For twelve years, I had carried the pain of losing him.
I had buried him.
I had accepted that he was gone.
But now...
his name was sitting in front of me.
Connected to the organization I had spent my life hunting.
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Evelyn.”
I stared at the paper.
The past had returned.
Not as a memory.
As an enemy.
May you like
And somewhere in the darkness...
my dead brother was waiting.
