Chapter 14 - The Judge Who Owned the CityThe abandoned courthouse stood empty before dawn.

Carmine brought only Benny.

Nell refused to stay behind.

Lorenzo insisted on coming.

Inside, Adrian Bell sat alone beneath the old courtroom chandelier.

Palmira was beside him.

Alive.

Bruised.

But calm.

Bell smiled.

“Family reunion.”

Carmine stepped forward.

“Let her go.”

Bell shook his head.

“After thirty years, you finally find your father.”

He looked at Lorenzo.

“And he finally comes home.”

Lorenzo said nothing.

Bell's smile widened.

“You know what I admired about you, Lorenzo?”

“I don't care.”

“You never wanted power.”

Bell laughed.

“That was your weakness.”

Carmine held up the ledger.

“This is what you want.”

“Yes.”

“Then take it.”

Bell looked at him.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because I want the original.”

Carmine placed the book on the table.

Bell opened it.

His expression changed.

Fake.

Carmine smiled.

“You taught everyone to bury the truth.”

Bell's eyes narrowed.

“You think you're clever.”

“No.”

Carmine looked toward Nell.

“She is.”

Nell stepped forward with a recipe book.

“Your men spent years looking for numbers.”

She held up the book.

“My father hid them in recipes.”

Bell stared.

“How?”

“Because you never understood what bakers do.”

She opened the book.

“They remember.”

She read the coded numbers aloud.

One by one.

Accounts.

Names.

Payments.

Secret identities.

Judges.

Police chiefs.

Bankers.

Bell's face hardened.

“You can't prove any of it.”

Lorenzo spoke.

“We can.”

He raised a small recorder.

Thomas Vale had left a final statement before his disappearance.

His voice filled the courtroom.

“I was ordered to classify the Fontaine fire as accidental.”

Bell's expression changed.

“By Judge Adrian Bell.”

The recording continued.

“He threatened my wife.”

Margaret entered the courtroom.

Alive.

Bell turned.

“How…”

Carmine smiled.

“Your network has a weakness.”

Bell asked:

“What?”

“People.”

Benny's men entered.

So did state investigators.

Federal agents.

News cameras.

The evidence had been transmitted already.

Bell's empire was collapsing in real time.

But Bell laughed.

“You think this ends with me?”

He pulled a gun.

Carmine raised his.

Bell fired first.

Palmira shoved Nell aside.

The bullet struck Palmira's arm.

Carmine shot Bell's weapon from his hand.

Benny tackled him.

Bell fell.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Lorenzo approached him.

“You ruined generations of lives.”

Bell laughed weakly.

“You became exactly what you hated.”

Lorenzo shook his head.

“No.”

He looked toward Carmine.

“He did.”

Carmine lowered his weapon.

“You're going to court.”

Bell stared.

“You think prison scares me?”

“No.”

Carmine turned away.

“Your records do.”

The final evidence was released.

The names spread across the city.

Bellweather foundations collapsed.

Bank accounts were frozen.

Judges resigned.

Police officials were arrested.

And Thomas Vale's disappearance was reopened.

But one mystery remained.

Silas Reed.

He had vanished before the authorities arrived.

Carmine found his silver cane in the courthouse basement.

Inside the handle was a final note.

The fire was ordered by Bell.

The betrayal was Daniel.

But someone else lit the first match.

Carmine read the line again.

Nell whispered:

“Who?”

He turned the paper over.

On the back was one name.

MARGARET VALE.

Nell's face went pale.

Carmine looked toward the courthouse doors.

Margaret was gone.
