Chapter 15 - Mommy Knew HerWe returned to the burned remains of Ricardo's mansion three days later.

The fire had destroyed nearly everything.
But the Vesper archive survived.
So did we.
Sofia was missing.
Elena was alive.
Ricardo had stopped sleeping.
And Leo refused to leave my side.
For three days, I had replayed the photograph.
Sofia sitting beside the man who supposedly created Vesper.
The man was called Adrian Vale.
Officially, Adrian Vale had died twenty years earlier.
Unofficially, his name appeared on more files than anyone else.
The architect.
The founder.
The man who designed the child program.
The man who had known Sofia.
The man who knew me.
We found his headquarters beneath an old publishing company in Manhattan.
Ricardo wanted guns.
I wanted answers.
We entered through a service tunnel.
The building was empty.
Too empty.
At the center of the basement was a single room.
Inside was a desk.
A computer.
And one photograph.
Sofia.
Daniel.
Ricardo.
Elena.
Me.
Leo.
All together.
Taken recently.
I touched the photograph.
“He's watching us.”
A voice came through the speakers.
“Yes.”
The monitor turned on.
Adrian Vale appeared.
He looked ordinary.
That was the terrifying part.
No scars.
No dramatic expression.
Just an old man in a gray suit.
“Clara.”
I stepped closer.
“You stole children.”
“We studied them.”
“You destroyed families.”
“We created systems.”
“You killed my father.”
“No.”
“Then who?”
“Your father killed himself.”
I shook my head.
“You're lying.”
Adrian smiled.
“You've finally become the girl I expected.”
Ricardo raised his gun toward the screen.
“Where is Sofia?”
Adrian's smile faded.
“She is exactly where she wants to be.”
“What does that mean?”
“She came willingly.”
I stared.
“Why?”
“Because your mother understood the truth long before you did.”
“What truth?”
Adrian leaned closer.
“Vesper was never created to control children.”
“Then why?”
“To protect something.”
“What?”
“Memory.”
I frowned.
“From what?”
“History.”
He opened another file.
Governments.
Corporations.
Wars.
Assassinations.
Millions of records.
“People rewrite history.”
He looked at me.
“We created living archives that couldn't be hacked, deleted, or burned.”
“You used children.”
“Yes.”
“And you call that protection?”
“No.”
He smiled sadly.
“We called it necessity.”
Ricardo fired at the monitor.
It shattered.
Then every door locked.
A countdown appeared.
Five minutes.
“Everyone move!”
We ran.
But before we reached the exit, a hidden door opened.
Sofia stepped through.
Alive.
She looked directly at me.
“Clara.”
I couldn't move.
“You were there,” I whispered.
“Yes.”
“You let us believe you were dead.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because it was the only way.”
“To do what?”
She walked toward me.
“To bring you here.”
I stared at her.
“You used me.”
“I protected you.”
“You lied.”
“I had to.”
Ricardo stepped between us.
“What is this place?”
Sofia looked at him.
“The beginning.”
She pressed a button.
A wall opened.
Behind it was a massive underground archive.
Millions of physical files.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Names.
Secrets.
Every piece of history Vesper had stolen.
“This is what they were protecting.”
I looked at her.
“Why bring me here?”
Sofia smiled.
“Because the archive needs a new guardian.”
I stared.
“No.”
“You already are.”
“I never agreed.”
“You did twenty-four years ago.”
My breath caught.
A monitor activated.
Young Clara appeared again.
She looked directly into the camera.
“If you're watching this, I'm older now.”
I stepped closer.
Young Clara smiled.
“I know you'll be angry.”
She paused.
“But one day you'll understand.”
Her eyes moved slightly, toward someone off camera.
Then she spoke the words I had heard my entire life without understanding them.
“Mommy knew her.”
The screen changed.
A photograph appeared.
Sofia holding baby me.
Beside her stood another woman.
The woman everyone thought was dead.
My grandmother.
And beside them was a newborn boy.
Leo.
I stared.
“That's impossible.”
Sofia took my hand.
“No.”
She turned toward Leo.
“He isn't just your brother.”
Leo looked up.
His face was calm.
“He is the last key.”
Ricardo stepped forward.
“What key?”
Sofia looked at him.
“The key to everything Adrian Vale built.”
Leo slowly smiled.
Then he said the same four words that started this nightmare.
“Mommy knew her.”
I looked at Sofia.
“What does that mean?”
She answered softly.
“It means your mother didn't recognize you that night.”
I felt my heart stop.
“She recognized the scar.”
“What scar?”
Sofia touched the crescent near my collarbone.
“That scar belonged to the first child Vesper ever created.”
I shook my head.
“No…”
Sofia whispered:
“You weren't born into this family, Clara.”
The room went silent.
“You were chosen for it.”
The archive lights turned on.
Every screen displayed the same name.
PROJECT CLARA.
And beneath it appeared one final sentence.
SUBJECT ZERO HAS REMEMBERED.
I stared at the screen.
Then at my mother.
Then at Ricardo.
Then Leo.
The nightmare wasn't ending.
It was finally beginning.
Because somewhere beneath the city, behind walls nobody knew existed, another door had just unlocked.
And someone was waiting on the other side.
Someone who had known me before Sofia ever did.
Someone who had been watching me for twenty-four years.
The screen flickered one last time.
A man's face appeared.
Daniel Vance.
My father.
Alive.
He looked directly into the camera.
And whispered:
“Clara, don't trust your mother.”
The screen went black.
May you like
Then a final message appeared.
CHAPTER TWO BEGINS WITH THE PERSON YOU THOUGHT WAS DEAD.
