Chapter 17 - The HeirThe vault was hidden beneath an old bank.

Dante didn't want to take me there.
I insisted.
“You remember the code?”
“I think so.”
“What code?”
“My birthday.”
We entered.
The vault opened.
Inside were documents.
Money.
Photographs.
And a black leather book.
I touched it.
Memory slammed into me.
My mother.
She was holding this book.
She spoke to someone.
“If anything happens to me, give this to Elena when she turns twenty-five.”
I opened my eyes.
“How old am I?”
Dante stared.
“Twenty-five.”
The room went silent.
The book contained financial records.
Names.
Payments.
Politicians.
Judges.
Police commanders.
Mafia families.
Everything.
Dante looked at me.
“You were the contingency.”
“For what?”
“To destroy them.”
I looked at the final page.
My mother's signature.
Then mine.
My hands shook.
“I never signed this.”
Dante read the page.
His face changed.
“You did.”
“How?”
“Seven years ago.”
“After my memory was erased?”
“Yes.”
The truth was worse than I imagined.
Someone had preserved my legal identity.
My mother had transferred control of her hidden assets to me.
I wasn't a waitress by accident.
I had been hiding.
Living beneath the radar.
Until someone decided it was time to bring me back.
Dante touched my hand.
“You are not what you think.”
“I know.”
“You don't have to do this.”
I looked at him.
“I do.”
“Why?”
“Because my mother died for it.”
He leaned closer.
“And if it kills you?”
I whispered:
“Then you don't let me die.”
His expression softened.
“I made that promise before.”
“Then make it again.”
He took my face between his hands.
“I swear.”
We kissed.
Not gently.
Not carefully.
It was the kind of kiss born from fear, blood, and too many almost-goodbyes.
When we separated, the vault lights flickered.
A printer started.
A document appeared.
Dante picked it up.
He read the first line.
Then looked at me.
“What?”
He handed it over.
My mother's final confession.
The first sentence made my blood freeze.
Dante Moretti is not the biological son of the Moretti family.
I looked at him.
He looked at me.
Then another line printed.
May you like
He is Elena's half-brother.
The room disappeared.
