Chapter 12 - Margaret's ConfessionThey rescued Margaret before dawn.

She was weak but conscious.
Claire held her mother's hand in the hospital.
“You knew.”
Margaret looked away.
“I wanted to protect you.”
“You knew Lily.”
“Yes.”
“You worked with Elena.”
“Yes.”
“You moved children.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
Claire felt tears burn.
“How many?”
“I don't know.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“It was never supposed to happen.”
“But it did.”
Margaret finally looked at her.
“I was twenty-two.”
“So?”
“I thought I was helping families escape dangerous places.”
“You believed traffickers?”
“I believed Elena.”
Claire shook her head.
“And Lily?”
“I helped her mother hide her.”
“From Antonio?”
“Yes.”
“Then who is her real father?”
Margaret looked toward Gabriel.
He stood in the doorway.
“Gabriel.”
He entered.
Margaret swallowed.
“Lily is yours.”
Gabriel nodded.
“I know.”
“No.”
Margaret's voice cracked.
“You don't understand.”
She pulled a sealed envelope from beneath her pillow.
Inside was a DNA report.
And another document.
A birth certificate.
Lily's name was written differently.
Not Lily Elena Varrick.
Lillian Elena Donnelly.
Claire stared.
“What?”
Margaret whispered:
“Before Lily became Gabriel's daughter, she was Claire's.”
The room froze.
Claire stopped breathing.
Gabriel looked at the report.
“That's impossible.”
Margaret shook her head.
“Elena was hiding a pregnancy.”
Claire's eyes filled with horror.
“You're saying…”
Margaret nodded.
“Lily is your biological sister.”
Claire looked at the little girl sitting across the room.
Lily was four.
Claire was twenty-five.
The age gap made sense.
But the timeline didn't.
Claire whispered:
“I would remember having a sister.”
“You weren't supposed to.”
Margaret revealed the final secret.
“After Lily was born, Elena gave her to me for six months.”
Claire stared.
“Why?”
“Because someone was hunting her.”
“Who?”
Margaret took a trembling breath.
“Your father.”
Claire's world cracked open.
“My father?”
“You were three months old.”
“You mean my father sold Lily?”
Margaret shook her head.
“No.”
“Then what?”
“He sold you.”
Gabriel's face darkened.
“To whom?”
Margaret looked at Claire.
“To the same people who later came for Lily.”
Silence.
Then Lily walked toward Claire.
She reached up.
Touched Claire's face.
And whispered:
“Mommy said you would come back for me.”
Claire broke down.
Because she suddenly understood.
The lullaby had never been about exposing one murderer.
It had been a map.
May you like
A map leading back to the first child ever sold.
Claire.
