Chapter 1: The Footsteps Behind Her

Serena thought Lily was finally broken.

She was wrong.

The marble foyer of the Blackwood mansion had become a nightmare.

Fourteen-month-old Ethan lay on the cold floor, his tiny body trembling as Serena still gripped his arm.

“Stop!” Lily screamed.

Her voice cracked with terror.

“You’re hurting him!”

Serena turned sharply.

For one second, Lily saw something terrifying in the woman’s eyes.

Not fear.

Not guilt.

Anger.

Pure, cold anger.

“You should have stayed out of this,” Serena whispered.

Lily pushed herself up from the floor.

Her stomach burned where Serena had kicked her. Every breath felt like a knife twisting beneath her ribs.

But Ethan was crying.

That was all that mattered.

“Please,” Lily gasped. “Let him go.”

Serena tightened her grip.

Ethan let out another weak cry.

His tiny fingers curled helplessly.

“Do you know what happens to people who accuse me?” Serena asked.

Lily stared at her.

“I know what happens to babies when nobody protects them.”

Serena’s expression changed.

She raised her hand.

Then stopped.

A sound drifted through the mansion.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

One.

Two.

Three.

Serena froze.

Lily stopped breathing.

The footsteps came from the entrance hall.

Someone was walking toward them.

Serena slowly turned her head.

The enormous front doors stood open.

A tall man appeared in the shadows.

Black suit.

Black coat.

Cold eyes.

Victor Blackwood.

The man who had built an empire in Chicago that powerful men were afraid to even mention.

The man who had supposedly been away until midnight.

But he was home.

Hours early.

Victor didn't speak.

His eyes moved across the room.

First, to Ethan.

Then to Lily.

Then to Serena.

Nobody moved.

Even the servants standing near the staircase seemed afraid to breathe.

Serena's face went white.

“Victor…”

He walked forward.

His shoes struck the marble floor.

Step.

Step.

Step.

“Explain.”

His voice was quiet.

That made it worse.

Serena swallowed.

“Victor, this isn't what it looks like.”

His gaze remained fixed on Ethan.

“What does it look like?”

Serena opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Victor crouched beside his son.

Ethan's face was flushed. His breathing was uneven.

Victor's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Lily noticed.

The calm disappeared from his eyes.

“Who hurt him?”

Serena immediately pointed toward Lily.

“She did.”

Lily stared at her in disbelief.

“What?”

Serena's voice became desperate.

“I caught her abusing Ethan! I told you she was dangerous!”

Victor slowly looked at Lily.

Lily's heart sank.

For months, Serena had been poisoning him against her.

Every little incident.

Every accusation.

Every missing toy.

Every bruise.

Serena had blamed Lily for everything.

And Victor had believed her.

Lily tried to speak.

“She’s lying.”

Serena interrupted.

“She attacked him while I was trying to stop her!”

Victor's jaw tightened.

Lily looked down.

There was blood on Ethan's sleeve.

Her blood.

She had scratched herself against the marble when Serena kicked her.

“Look at his arm,” Lily whispered.

Victor did.

His eyes narrowed.

Then he looked at Serena.

“You said Lily hurt him.”

“She did!”

“Then why is your hand around his wrist?”

Serena glanced down.

She hadn't even realized she was still holding Ethan.

She immediately released him.

“I was trying to restrain him.”

Victor stood.

“Restrain a fourteen-month-old child?”

“I…”

Serena stepped backward.

Victor took one step forward.

She took another step back.

For the first time, Serena looked genuinely afraid.

Then she saw the security camera mounted above the foyer.

Her face changed.

“Victor…”

He followed her gaze.

Silence.

Victor looked at the camera.

Then back at her.

“Bring me the footage.”

One of his men immediately pulled out his phone.

Serena's breathing became faster.

“Victor, please.”

He ignored her.

“Every camera.”

“Victor, listen to me.”

“Every recording from this house for the last forty-eight hours.”

Serena rushed toward him.

“I can explain!”

Victor raised one hand.

Two men stepped between them.

Serena stopped.

“Don't do this.”

Victor's voice remained cold.

“You spent months telling me Lily was dangerous.”

Serena's lips trembled.

“She is!”

“Then the cameras will prove it.”

A tablet was brought into the room.

The footage began.

At first, Serena looked confident.

The screen showed Lily entering Ethan's nursery.

Then another recording.

Serena following her.

Another.

Serena standing beside Ethan's crib.

Another.

Lily rushing into the room after hearing him cry.

Then came the footage from that morning.

Serena appeared on screen holding Ethan.

She looked around.

Nobody was there.

Then she grabbed his arm.

Hard.

Lily's face went pale.

Serena lunged toward the tablet.

“Turn it off!”

Victor didn't move.

The recording continued.

It showed Serena dragging Ethan across the nursery.

It showed Lily running toward them.

It showed Serena striking Lily.

The mansion became completely silent.

Then the footage reached the moment Serena leaned toward Lily and whispered something.

The audio was faint.

But clear enough.

“Touch him again, and you'll disappear.”

Lily covered her mouth.

Victor stared at the screen.

Serena began crying.

“Victor, I was angry. I didn't mean it.”

Victor slowly turned toward her.

“You lied to me.”

“I was protecting Ethan!”

“You attacked him.”

“I made a mistake!”

“You blamed Lily.”

“I was scared!”

“You threatened to kill her.”

Serena shook her head violently.

“I never said that!”

Victor looked at the screen.

Then at Serena.

“You did.”

His voice dropped.

“And now I have proof.”

Suddenly, Ethan made a weak sound.

Lily rushed to him.

Victor moved first.

He carefully picked up his son.

Ethan's tiny hand closed around his father's finger.

Victor's expression hardened.

“Get the car.”

One of his men immediately ran outside.

“We're taking him to the hospital.”

Lily tried to stand.

Her legs nearly collapsed.

Victor caught her arm.

“You're coming too.”

Lily looked at him.

“Me?”

“You were hurt.”

“I'm fine.”

“No.”

The word was absolute.

Then Victor looked at Serena.

She was standing alone in the middle of the foyer.

Her perfect appearance was gone.

Mascara streaked her cheeks.

Her hands trembled.

But there was something else in her eyes.

Something Lily didn't understand.

Victor's men surrounded her.

“Take her upstairs.”

Serena suddenly smiled.

It was small.

Almost invisible.

Lily noticed.

And for some reason, that smile frightened her more than Serena's screaming.

As Victor carried Ethan toward the door, Lily followed.

Then Serena whispered something.

So quietly that nobody else heard.

“Victor doesn't know the whole truth.”

Lily stopped.

She turned around.

Serena was smiling directly at her.

“You think you've won?”

Lily's blood ran cold.

Serena leaned closer to the guard beside her.

“Ask Lily who Ethan's real mother is.”

Lily froze.

Victor stopped walking.

Slowly, he turned around.

His eyes met Lily's.

“What did she just say?”

Lily couldn't breathe.

Because Serena had just mentioned a secret Lily had sworn she would never reveal.

A secret that could destroy the Blackwood family forever.

And Victor was already walking back toward her.

“Lily.”

His voice was dangerously calm.

“Tell me.”

“What is Serena talking about?”

Lily's lips parted.

No words came.

Then Ethan began crying again.

And from somewhere upstairs...

a door slammed shut.

Someone else was inside the mansion.

May you like

Someone who wasn't supposed to be there.

And Lily suddenly realized that Serena's betrayal might have been only the beginning.
