Chapter 12 - Lorenzo raised his weapon.Richard Vale did not flinch.

He looked older than the photographs.

White hair.

Pale face.

A dark cane.

But his eyes were exactly as Lorenzo remembered.

Calm.

Observant.

Cold.

“You're supposed to be dead.”

Richard smiled.

“So are several people in this room.”

Rachel stepped forward.

“Hands where I can see them.”

Richard laughed.

“Detective, if I wanted you dead, you'd already be dead.”

Lorenzo's voice was low.

“Why?”

Richard looked at him.

“Because your family was built on lies.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“No. It is the foundation.”

He glanced toward Claire.

“She survived because Isabella saved her.”

Isabella nodded.

“Then Vincent came after us.”

“Of course.”

“Why did he kill my father?”

“Because your father grew a conscience.”

Lorenzo's expression darkened.

“My father tried to tell me the truth.”

“Yes.”

“What truth?”

Richard looked at him for a long moment.

“Your family's money did not come from shipping.”

Lorenzo frowned.

“Then where?”

“Insurance fraud.”

“Extortion?”

Richard shook his head.

“Neither.”

“Then what?”

“Identity.”

Lorenzo stared.

Richard explained.

For decades, the DeLuca family had maintained duplicate identities for wealthy clients.

People who wanted to disappear.

People who wanted to inherit under different names.

People who wanted dead men to remain legally alive.

People who wanted living men to become legally dead.

The system produced enormous hidden fortunes.

Vincent had expanded it into fraud.

Claire discovered the records.

Isabella found the financial trail.

Enzo discovered Richard was still running the network.

Then everything collapsed.

Lorenzo looked at Richard.

“Why did you target Isabella?”

“I didn't.”

“Then who?”

Richard looked toward the doorway.

“Vincent.”

“Under whose orders?”

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“His own.”

Lorenzo froze.

“But you said my father taught you.”

“He did.”

“And my mother?”

“She tried to stop him.”

“And Vincent?”

“Vincent wanted control.”

Richard leaned on his cane.

“Your father believed he could leave the system.”

“He couldn't.”

“Vincent refused to let him.”

“And Isabella?”

“Isabella became dangerous because she found the ledger.”

“What ledger?”

Richard stared at him.

“The original ledger.”

Rachel asked:

“Where is it?”

Richard looked at Lorenzo.

“Your mother has it.”

Everyone turned.

Lorenzo looked at his mother.

She slowly closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

She answered quietly.

“Your old bedroom.”

They returned to the estate.

Lorenzo entered the room where he had slept as a child.

Nothing had changed.

The old books.

The wooden chest.

The faded photograph of his parents.

His mother walked to the fireplace.

Pressed one stone.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a black ledger.

Old.

Leather bound.

Lorenzo took it.

The first page listed names.

Hundreds.

Payments.

False deaths.

New identities.

Hidden fortunes.

Then he saw one name.

Isabella DeLuca.

Beside it:

STATUS: DEAD.

He turned the page.

Someone had written beneath it recently.

CORRECT STATUS: ALIVE.

Lorenzo's fingers shook.

Another page.

Sophia Walker.

STATUS: PROTECTED.

Emma Walker.

STATUS: WITNESS.

His stomach dropped.

Then another page.

Lorenzo DeLuca.

STATUS: REPLACEMENT.

He stared.

“What does this mean?”

No one answered.

Rachel took the ledger.

She turned a few pages.

Then looked at Lorenzo.

“This isn't about your death.”

“What then?”

She pointed at the note.

REPLACEMENT.

“You weren't the intended heir.”

Lorenzo frowned.

“Who was?”

A photograph slipped from the ledger.

A newborn baby.

A woman holding him.

The woman was Lorenzo's mother.

The child was not Lorenzo.

Rachel stared.

Isabella's face turned pale.

Lorenzo whispered:

“That's not me.”

His mother closed her eyes.

“No.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“Then who am I?”

She began to cry.

“You are Enzo's son.”

Lorenzo stared.

“That doesn't answer the question.”

His mother whispered:

“You are his second son.”

Silence.

“Your older brother was supposed to inherit everything.”

“Where is he?”

She could barely speak.

“He disappeared twenty-six years ago.”

Richard's face hardened.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

Richard stared at the photograph.

“That is impossible.”

“Why?”

“Because your brother didn't disappear.”

He looked at Lorenzo.

“He has been alive this entire time.”

“Where?”

Richard's eyes moved toward the window.

May you like

Then toward Vincent's office across the estate.

“He's Vincent.”
