Chapter 15 - Jonathan could not speak. The young woman stood beneath the cold laboratory lights, Lily resting peacefully in her arms.

She looked twenty.

Perhaps twenty-one.

But Jonathan remembered a photograph.

A tiny newborn in Evelyn's arms.

His daughter.

The child he had mourned.

The child everyone had told him was dead.

Yet here she was.

Alive.

Grown.

Watching him.

"Who are you?"

Her smile faded.

"You really don't remember me."

Jonathan shook his head.

"I've never seen you."

She stepped closer.

"My name is Anna."

Evelyn began crying.

Jonathan looked at her.

"You knew."

Evelyn nodded.

"She was the first."

Jonathan turned toward the hundreds of tanks.

Anna continued.

"Before Lily."

"Before Michael."

"Before Marcus."

She looked at Jonathan.

"They used my cells to build everyone else."

Jonathan stared.

"So you're the original."

Anna nodded.

"The first successful subject."

"Why didn't you age?"

Anna looked down at herself.

"Because the treatment stopped my cells from dying."

Jonathan realized.

"That's why you look twenty."

"Yes."

"But why create hundreds of children?"

Anna looked toward the tanks.

"Because they couldn't replicate me."

She smiled bitterly.

"So they kept trying."

Jonathan's fists tightened.

"Who runs this place?"

Anna looked toward the corridor.

"My grandfather."

Jonathan's father.

"But he isn't the leader."

Jonathan stared.

"Then who is?"

Anna's expression changed.

She looked at Lily.

"Your father thinks he's building immortality."

"He's not?"

"No."

"Then what is this?"

Anna whispered:

"An army."

The lights went out.

A deep mechanical sound echoed through the facility.

Doors unlocked.

One by one.

The glass tanks began opening.

Jonathan stared in horror.

Children emerged.

Hundreds.

All with the silver crescent.

All staring at him.

Then every child turned toward Lily.

Michael fell to his knees.

"They can hear her."

Jonathan looked at Anna.

"What does that mean?"

Anna answered:

"She's their signal."

Lily opened her eyes.

The room became silent.

The baby raised one tiny hand.

Every child took one step forward.

Jonathan moved in front of her.

"Stay back."

Anna shook her head.

"They aren't going to hurt her."

"How do you know?"

"Because she's not controlling them."

Jonathan stared.

"Then who is?"

Anna looked at him.

"You."

Jonathan's blood went cold.

"I don't understand."

Anna pointed at Jonathan.

"Lily healed you."

"Yes."

"And when she did, she didn't just repair your nerves."

Jonathan looked at his hands.

"What else?"

Anna answered:

"She transferred her entire regenerative system into you."

Jonathan's heart stopped.

"You've become the anchor."

"The anchor for what?"

Anna whispered:

"The network."

The children began moving.

Hundreds of them.

But none attacked.

They formed a circle around Jonathan.

Michael walked to the center.

His eyes turned silver.

He looked at Jonathan.

"I can hear everyone."

Jonathan whispered:

"What are they saying?"

Michael's voice changed.

Hundreds of children's voices seemed to overlap.

"Home."

Jonathan's eyes filled with tears.

Then the facility doors exploded.

Armed soldiers flooded inside.

Behind them walked Jonathan's father.

He looked young now.

Completely restored.

His wounds had vanished.

He smiled.

"You've done it."

Jonathan stared at him.

"Done what?"

His father spread his arms.

"The network."

Jonathan understood.

The entire project had been designed to create a biological network connecting every subject.

And now Lily had activated it through him.

His father continued:

"You were always the final component."

Jonathan stepped forward.

"No."

His father laughed.

"You think you can stop this?"

Jonathan looked at the children.

Hundreds of frightened faces.

Hundreds of lives stolen.

Then he looked at Lily.

His daughter.

His family.

His choice.

"Yes."

His father raised his gun.

Jonathan didn't move.

The children did.

Every single one stepped between Jonathan and the soldiers.

The soldiers froze.

Jonathan's father stared.

"Impossible."

Anna smiled.

"Not impossible."

She looked at Jonathan.

"Choice."

Jonathan felt warmth spread through his body.

His legs no longer hurt.

His spine felt stronger than it had in decades.

He walked forward.

One step.

Then another.

His father stepped backward.

Jonathan stopped a few feet away.

"You took fourteen years from me."

His father said nothing.

"You took my wife."

Jonathan's eyes burned.

"You took my children."

He looked around at the hundreds of subjects.

"You turned them into experiments."

The old man's smile disappeared.

Jonathan whispered:

"But you made one mistake."

"What?"

"You taught me how to lose everything."

Jonathan reached for Lily.

She placed her tiny hand in his.

A wave of light moved through the room.

Every monitor exploded.

Every tank opened.

Every security system shut down.

The soldiers dropped their weapons.

Michael gasped.

"I can hear them."

Jonathan looked at him.

"What do they say?"

Michael smiled through tears.

"They're free."

The facility began collapsing.

Jonathan's father ran.

Marcus chased him.

Kane appeared from the shadows.

Blood covered his shirt.

He raised his gun.

Jonathan looked at him.

Kane smiled.

"Do you really think this is over?"

Jonathan stared.

Kane pointed toward Lily.

"She's only the beginning."

Before Jonathan could respond, Kane disappeared into the smoke.

Outside, explosions shook the ground.

The laboratory collapsed beneath the earth.

By sunrise, the authorities had discovered the hidden facility.

The children were taken to safety.

Government officials denied everything.

News outlets called it a "private medical research site."

Jonathan knew better.

For the first time in fourteen years, he stood without assistance.

He held Lily in his arms.

Evelyn stood beside him.

Marcus looked toward the ruins.

"I don't think he's dead."

Jonathan knew who he meant.

His father.

Kane.

Neither body had been found.

No one knew what would happen next.

Weeks later, Jonathan moved the children into a protected estate.

Doctors studied them.

Lawyers fought governments.

Investigators uncovered decades of hidden records.

And for the first time, the world began learning pieces of the truth.

But one mystery remained.

Why had Lily chosen Jonathan?

One night, Jonathan woke to the sound of footsteps.

He walked downstairs.

Lily was sitting on the floor.

Awake.

Alone.

She was staring at a photograph.

Jonathan approached.

It was a photograph of himself and Evelyn from before the accident.

Lily touched his face in the photograph.

Then she looked at Jonathan.

Her eyes became silver.

Jonathan froze.

A voice echoed through his mind.

Not Michael's.

Not Evelyn's.

Not his own.

A child's voice.

"Father."

Jonathan dropped the photograph.

Another image flashed through his mind.

A laboratory.

A woman.

A newborn.

And a date.

A date twenty years in the future.

Then the voice spoke again.

"You saved us."

Jonathan's heart raced.

"Who are you?"

The child answered:

"The first."

Jonathan looked at Lily.

She was smiling.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A man's voice whispered:

"Mr. Vale."

Jonathan knew that voice.

Kane.

"You found the children."

Jonathan said nothing.

Kane laughed softly.

"You thought Project Echo was about immortality."

Jonathan's grip tightened.

"What is it about?"

A pause.

Then Kane said:

"Time."

Jonathan froze.

"What?"

"The children aren't designed to heal the past."

The line crackled.

"They are designed to survive the future."

Jonathan stared at Lily.

Kane continued:

"And now that you've activated the network..."

The lights in the mansion began flickering.

"...someone from the future knows where you are."

The call ended.

Jonathan slowly looked out the window.

Across the dark field, a little girl stood beneath the trees.

She was perhaps ten years old.

Wearing a white dress.

Watching the house.

Jonathan stepped toward the glass.

The girl smiled.

Then she lifted her hand.

A silver crescent glowed beneath her ear.

Lily began crying upstairs.

Every child in the mansion woke at exactly the same time.

And somewhere far beyond the city, a machine that had been silent for twenty years suddenly powered on.

A screen flickered.

A message appeared.

PROJECT ECHO: PHASE 2

Then another line appeared beneath it.

SUBJECT JONATHAN VALE: ACTIVE

And finally:

TIME OF ARRIVAL: 03:17 A.M.

Jonathan looked at the clock.

03:16.

One minute remained.

And for the first time in his life, the old man who had once been unable to move his legs understood the terrifying truth.

The baby hadn't saved him.

She had awakened him.

And whatever was coming...

May you like

had been waiting for him to stand.
