Chapter 10: Blood Doesn't Lie

Ethan sat alone inside Maya Ortiz's apartment, staring at the sealed evidence envelope lying on the table.
The room was silent except for the low hum of computer fans. Three monitors glowed with lines of encrypted code while rain tapped softly against the windows.
Inside the envelope were several strands of Lily's hair.
He had collected them that morning from the girl's hairbrush while she was asleep.
He hated himself for doing it.
His fingers tightened around the envelope.
"If Emma was telling the truth..."
He couldn't finish the sentence.
If Emma had never lied...
If Lily truly was his daughter...
Then this tiny envelope contained the answer to every question that had haunted him for five years.
The apartment door opened.
Maya walked in carrying two cups of coffee.
"You look terrible."
"I haven't slept."
"I noticed."
She placed one cup beside him.
"You sure you want to do this?"
Ethan nodded.
"I need the truth."
"The truth usually costs more than people expect."
"I've already paid enough."
Maya sighed before opening her laptop.
"I'll need your DNA."
Without hesitation Ethan pulled a folding knife from his pocket and sliced the tip of his finger.
A drop of blood landed on a sterile collection swab.
"There."
She looked at him.
"You really weren't kidding."
"No."
She sealed the sample.
"I'll compare it with Lily's DNA once Marcus gets what we need."
As if summoned by his name, the apartment buzzer rang.
Marcus Reed entered moments later carrying a soaked backpack.
Water dripped from his jacket onto the floor.
"You owe me."
"What happened?"
Marcus unzipped the backpack and placed several thick hospital folders on the table.
"Breaking into St. Anne Medical Center wasn't exactly easy."
"You stole medical records?"
"I borrowed them."
"You hacked security?"
"I bribed the night janitor."
Maya laughed.
"Sometimes the old methods work better."
Marcus spread the files across the table.
"Birth certificates."
"Prenatal examinations."
"Blood work."
"Emergency records."
Everything connected to Emma Collins.
Everything connected to Lily.
Except...
Marcus frowned.
"Something's wrong."
"What?"
"Half these files have been altered."
Maya immediately leaned closer.
"The dates don't match."
She opened one folder.
"Look."
The electronic timestamp said the file had been created seven years ago.
The paper inside had been printed only eighteen months earlier.
"They replaced the originals."
Marcus nodded.
"Professionals."
Ethan felt his stomach tighten.
"Can you recover the real information?"
"I'll try."
Maya plugged a portable scanner into her laptop.
For the next three hours the apartment became a digital battlefield.
She reconstructed deleted metadata.
Compared hidden hospital backups.
Recovered corrupted archives.
Cross-referenced government medical databases.
Every recovered file revealed another inconsistency.
Emma's pregnancy records had been rewritten.
Blood types had changed.
Doctor signatures had been forged.
Ultrasound dates no longer matched.
Whoever had manipulated the records knew exactly what they were doing.
Marcus folded his arms.
"This wasn't done to hide a mistake."
"It was done to manufacture an entirely different identity."
Ethan stared at Lily's childhood vaccination card.
Even that had been modified.
"They erased her life."
"No," Maya corrected.
"They replaced it."
Hours later the DNA sequencing finally completed.
A green notification appeared across the screen.
DNA Comparison Complete
Nobody spoke.
Maya clicked the file.
The processing wheel spun for several seconds that felt like an eternity.
Ethan's heartbeat echoed inside his ears.
Marcus silently watched the screen.
Finally...
The report appeared.
Subject A
Ethan Carter
DNA Profile Confirmed
Subject B
Lily Collins
DNA Profile Confirmed
Probability of Biological Father
0.0%
The room became completely silent.
Ethan didn't move.
He simply stared.
Again.
And again.
Zero point zero percent.
Impossible.
He whispered,
"There has to be a mistake."
Maya reran the comparison.
Same result.
Marcus checked the raw sequence manually.
Same result.
Ethan slowly leaned back in his chair.
His breathing became shallow.
"No..."
He shook his head.
"No."
He remembered every birthday.
Every bedtime story.
Every scraped knee he had bandaged.
Every nightmare she had cried through.
Every moment he had believed she was his daughter.
None of it changed what the screen showed.
Biologically...
She wasn't his.
Marcus quietly broke the silence.
"Emma lied."
Ethan slammed his fist onto the table so hard that one of the coffee cups shattered.
"I don't believe that."
"The DNA doesn't lie."
"No."
His voice cracked.
"Emma had dozens of chances to tell me the truth."
Maya looked at him carefully.
"Unless..."
She stopped.
Marcus noticed.
"Unless what?"
She pulled up another file.
"The DNA report isn't finished."
"What do you mean?"
She pointed toward the bottom.
"There was an automatic secondary database search."
Ethan frowned.
"Secondary?"
"The software checks for close relatives whenever a direct parental match fails."
Marcus leaned closer.
"Did it find anyone?"
Maya's expression slowly changed.
Confusion.
Then disbelief.
"No..."
"What?"
"This can't be right."
She enlarged the results.
One additional match appeared.
The confidence score climbed rapidly.
87%.
91%.
95%.
99.98%.
The apartment felt colder.
Marcus read the line aloud.
"Possible Biological Father..."
His voice stopped.
Ethan stepped forward.
"What is it?"
Neither Marcus nor Maya answered.
Instead...
They simply looked at the name on the screen.
It wasn't a civilian.
It wasn't anyone in the national DNA registry.
It wasn't even listed as a real person.
Only a classified government designation appeared.
BIOLOGICAL FATHER IDENTIFIED
UNKNOWN GOVERNMENT SUBJECT
Designation: 12-A
Genetic Archive Access Level: OMEGA
Status: CLASSIFIED
Nobody breathed.
Ethan stared at the words.
"What the hell is Subject Twelve-A?"
Maya's fingers flew across the keyboard.
She searched military databases.
Nothing.
Federal archives.
Nothing.
Black Compass records.
Nothing.
Every search ended with the same response.
ACCESS DENIED
Marcus slowly spoke.
"I've seen classification levels before."
"But never Omega."
"What does it mean?"
He looked at Ethan.
"It means whoever Twelve-A is..."
"...the government buried his existence so deeply that even intelligence agencies aren't supposed to know."
Maya suddenly froze.
Her monitor flashed red.
A warning window filled the screen.
UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED
GENETIC ARCHIVE BREACH LOGGED
LOCATION TRACE INITIATED
She whispered a single word.
"Run."
Every computer in the apartment shut down simultaneously.
The lights flickered.
Outside, tires screeched on the wet pavement.
Black SUVs stopped beneath the apartment building.
Doors opened.
Boots hit the ground in perfect synchronization.
Marcus pulled his pistol.
"They found us."
Ethan looked once more at the DNA report still glowing faintly on the powerless monitor.
Lily wasn't his daughter.
She was the child of someone who officially didn't exist.
May you like
Someone known only as...
Government Subject 12-A.
