Chapter 14 - Darkness.Then gunfire.

Gabriel shoved me behind the stone column.

Margaret pulled Elena and Sophia toward the library.

Victor disappeared.

His men moved through the hall.

But something was wrong.

They were not shooting at us.

They were shooting at each other.

The outside group had turned on Victor's people.

Chaos exploded across the mansion.

I heard shouting.

Glass breaking.

A car engine.

Then a voice through the darkness.

“Julian!”

My name.

Not Victor.

A woman.

I moved toward the library.

Margaret was standing beside Sophia.

Elena was gone.

“Where is my wife?”

Victor's voice came from somewhere above.

“She was never your wife.”

I froze.

The voice wasn't possible.

I turned.

An old woman stood at the top of the staircase.

White hair.

Black dress.

Holding a cane.

I recognized her.

My mother.

But my mother had been dead for fourteen years.

Sophia screamed.

“That's not Grandma.”

The woman smiled.

“Smart child.”

Gabriel raised his weapon.

“Who are you?”

The woman laughed.

Then pulled off the mask.

Not my mother.

Someone else.

A woman who looked almost identical.

Victor stepped beside her.

“Sophia is the final piece.”

I understood.

There had always been another player.

Victor had not built Crown Meridian alone.

The woman descended the stairs.

“Your father discovered Dawnridge by accident,” she said.

“You funded Victor.”

“Yes.”

“Who are you?”

“Clara Mercer.”

My heart stopped.

“Impossible.”

“My father's sister.”

A woman erased from every family record.

Gabriel stared.

“Why?”

“Because your father stole the trust.”

She looked at me.

“He used our family's name to build it.”

Victor stepped forward.

“I warned you this would happen.”

Clara ignored him.

“The original Dawnridge trust was created by our grandfather.”

She held up a document.

“Your father transferred ownership to himself.”

“So you wanted it back.”

“I wanted what was mine.”

“You killed my wife.”

Clara shook her head.

“Victor did.”

Victor looked at her.

“You ordered it.”

“I ordered silence.”

“You ordered death.”

Clara smiled.

“You misunderstood.”

Victor looked suddenly afraid.

That was the moment I understood.

Victor had always believed he was the mastermind.

He wasn't.

Clara had used him.

She had built him into the perfect servant.

Then she had watched him grow powerful.

She did not care about my company.

She wanted Dawnridge.

All of it.

Victor looked at me.

“Do not trust her.”

Clara laughed.

“You see?”

She turned to me.

“Even now he thinks he is protecting you.”

“Where is Elena?”

Clara smiled.

“Alive.”

She signaled.

A guard brought Elena into the room.

Unharmed.

Clara walked toward Sophia.

“This child inherits everything.”

“No.”

“She does.”

“Not if she is not legally recognized.”

Clara smiled.

“That is why the blood test matters.”

I held up the original document.

“She is.”

Clara's smile disappeared.

Then Victor moved.

Fast.

He grabbed Sophia.

Gabriel raised his gun.

“Drop the child!”

Victor pressed a blade against Sophia's arm.

Nobody moved.

“Enough!” he shouted.

For the first time, Victor sounded terrified.

He dragged Sophia backward.

“You all used me.”

Clara stared.

“You were useful.”

Victor looked at me.

“You trusted me.”

“Yes.”

“And I gave you everything.”

“No.”

“You would have died without me.”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“That was the plan.”

He froze.

Then Sophia spoke.

“The pill was wrong.”

Victor looked at her.

She smiled slightly.

Then lifted her drawing.

On it were three figures.

Victor.

Clara.

Me.

And beneath them was a tiny red square.

8:12.

Victor stared.

“What does that mean?”

Sophia answered:

“Mom said you never look down.”

Victor looked toward the floor.

Gabriel did too.

A small blinking light.

Recording.

Victor stepped back.

“What is that?”

I smiled.

“The second recording device.”

His face collapsed.

Every word he had spoken was captured.

Every admission.

Every threat.

Every confession.

Clara turned toward him.

“You fool.”

Victor stared at her.

Then he laughed.

“You thought you could erase me.”

He looked at me.

“But I know where the ledger is.”

My blood froze.

“What?”

Victor smiled.

“The ledger isn't in the mausoleum.”

I stared.

“It never was.”

He looked at Sophia.

“She hid the real one.”

Sophia frowned.

“I didn't.”

Victor smiled.

Then his eyes widened.

Because he suddenly understood something.

The fake ledger had been planted.

By me.

The real ledger was already somewhere else.

And only one person knew where.

Elena.

Victor looked at her.

She whispered:

“Your office.”

His expression changed.

“No.”

“Yes.”

I said:

“The copy was bait.”

Victor backed away.

Then sirens erupted outside.

Real sirens.

Police.

Federal agents.

The recordings had already been transmitted.

Victor looked around.

For the first time in twenty-five years, he had nowhere to go.

Clara was arrested first.

Victor was next.

But as officers pulled him away, he looked back at me.

And smiled.

“Julian.”

I stepped closer.

“What?”

He whispered:

“You still don't know why your father chose you.”

The door slammed shut behind him.

I thought it was over.

May you like

Then I remembered his final sentence.

And suddenly I wanted to know.
