Chapter 14: The Man Who Built Death

The man standing at the end of the corridor looked exactly like the recordings.

The same white coat.

The same calm expression.

The same eyes that had watched children become experiments.

Thirty years had passed.

But he had not changed.

Not even a little.

That was the first thing that terrified me.

The second was the way everyone reacted to him.

Thomas Reed.

Sarah Carter.

Even Subject Zero.

They all went silent.

Like the person standing there was not just another scientist.

He was the reason they existed.

The man slowly stepped forward.

His shoes echoed against the concrete floor.

“Ethan Carter.”

Hearing my name from him felt wrong.

Like a stranger opening a locked room inside my mind.

He smiled.

“You finally woke up.”

I stared at him.

“Who are you?”

The man looked almost offended.

Then amused.

“You really don’t remember.”

Sarah stepped between us.

“Stay away from him.”

The man stopped.

A small smile appeared.

“Sarah.”

His voice was calm.

“Still protecting your favorite creation.”

Sarah’s expression hardened.

“He is my son.”

The man looked at me.

“No.”

A pause.

“He is our achievement.”

The words made my stomach turn.

Thomas stepped forward.

“You were supposed to be gone.”

The man looked at him.

“And you were supposed to be loyal.”

The silence after that was terrifying.

Thomas looked away.

The man continued walking.

“My name is Dr. Adrian Vale.”

The name hit Thomas like a memory.

“The founder of Project 214.”

Vale smiled.

“Not the founder.”

He looked at the room around him.

“The father.”

I felt sick.

A person who called a laboratory his child.

A place where people were treated like machines.

I looked at Sarah.

“Why is he alive?”

Sarah didn’t answer.

Vale did.

“Because I never died.”

He touched his chest.

“I simply upgraded.”

The phrase made my skin crawl.

“Upgraded?”

He nodded.

“The human body is weak.”

He looked around.

“Disease. Aging. Death.”

A pause.

“All problems caused by biology.”

Sarah whispered:

“You became the experiment.”

Vale smiled.

“Exactly.”

I stared.

“You transferred yourself?”

“Not transferred.”

He corrected.

“Expanded.”

The room became silent.

“I created a system where consciousness could exist without a body.”

Thomas looked disgusted.

“You became the thing you were trying to create.”

Vale smiled.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“I created something greater.”

The screens around us suddenly turned on.

A massive network appeared.

Thousands of files.

Thousands of names.

Every subject from Project 214.

But one thing connected them all.

A single line.

CONNECTION SOURCE: ETHAN CARTER

My heart sank.

Vale pointed at the screen.

“You see?”

“Every experiment.”

“Every successful transfer.”

“Every copy.”

“They all came from you.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

Vale smiled.

“That is why you are special.”

He walked closer.

“You still believe you are one person.”

The words felt like a weapon.

“You are not.”

A pause.

“You are the foundation.”

Sarah grabbed my arm.

“Don’t listen to him.”

Vale ignored her.

“For thirty years, I studied consciousness.”

He looked at Subject Zero.

“I learned something important.”

The child stared back.

“What?”

Vale smiled.

“Consciousness does not belong to one person.”

He pointed at me.

“It belongs to everyone connected.”

The countdown appeared again.

10:00

Ten minutes.

Vale looked at the timer.

“Almost time.”

Thomas moved forward.

“You cannot merge them.”

Vale looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because they are people.”

Vale laughed softly.

“People?”

He looked around.

“Thomas, you helped create this.”

Thomas looked ashamed.

“I thought we were saving lives.”

“No.”

Vale’s voice became colder.

“You were creating a future.”

He looked at me.

“The future begins with him.”

I stepped forward.

“What happens if I refuse?”

Vale smiled.

“Then millions of memories disappear.”

I froze.

“What?”

He pointed toward the files.

“All connected consciousness will collapse.”

Sarah looked horrified.

“He’s lying.”

Vale shook his head.

“Am I?”

The screen changed.

A world map appeared.

Millions of connection points.

Every person connected to Project 214.

Not just experiments.

People.

Patients.

Copies.

Everyone.

My chest tightened.

“How many?”

Vale answered:

“Over thirty years?”

A pause.

“Enough.”

Sarah looked at me.

“Ethan, don’t believe him.”

Vale smiled.

“She still thinks you are her son.”

He looked at me.

“But she never told you the truth.”

My eyes moved toward Sarah.

“What truth?”

Sarah’s face changed.

Fear.

Guilt.

Vale continued.

“She didn’t save you.”

Silence.

“She created you.”

I looked at Sarah.

“No.”

Sarah whispered:

“Ethan…”

“No.”

Vale stepped closer.

“Your memories.”

“Your childhood.”

“Your entire identity.”

“All carefully designed.”

My breathing became uneven.

“You’re lying.”

Vale smiled.

“Ask her.”

I looked at my mother.

The silence was enough.

“Mom?”

Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.

“I wanted to tell you.”

My voice broke.

“Tell me what?”

She looked at me.

“The child you remember…”

A pause.

“Was not you.”

The room went silent.

I felt like the floor disappeared.

“What?”

Sarah cried.

“When the accident happened, you were too young.”

She struggled to speak.

“You died.”

The words cut through me.

“You died before Project 214 began.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“No.”

Sarah stepped closer.

“The person standing here…”

She touched my face.

“Is the consciousness created from everything I had left of you.”

The truth crushed me.

A copy.

Again.

But this time…

From my own mother.

Vale whispered:

“Now you understand.”

He looked at Subject Zero.

“You are not the original.”

Then at me.

“You are not the copy.”

A pause.

“You are the evolution.”

The countdown reached:

05:00

Five minutes.

The machines began activating.

The merge chamber opened.

A massive circular platform appeared.

Designed for one person.

Vale looked at me.

“Come home.”

I stared at the machine.

Then at Sarah.

Then Subject Zero.

Three versions.

Three truths.

And one impossible choice.

Subject Zero suddenly spoke.

“Don’t do it.”

Everyone turned.

The child looked at me.

For the first time…

He looked afraid.

Vale frowned.

“What are you doing?”

Subject Zero ignored him.

He looked directly at me.

“Ethan.”

My name.

Not Subject One.

Not a file number.

My name.

“If you enter that machine…”

A pause.

“You won’t become everything.”

The lights flickered.

The child whispered:

“You will disappear.”

The countdown continued.

04:00

Vale’s expression changed.

“Stop him.”

The doctors moved forward.

Thomas stepped in front of me.

Sarah grabbed my hand.

The hospital alarm screamed.

And then the entire underground facility shook.

Because something had awakened beneath us.

Something even Vale feared.

A message appeared on every screen:

UNKNOWN CONSCIOUSNESS DETECTED

SOURCE: BELOW PROJECT 214

Everyone froze.

Vale slowly looked down.

“No…”

Thomas whispered:

“What is underneath us?”

Sarah’s face turned pale.

Because she knew.

She whispered:

“The first experiment.”

The floor cracked.

A deep voice echoed from below.

A voice older than the hospital itself.

A voice that sounded like mine.

“Finally…”

A pause.

May you like

“You found the beginning.”
