Chapter 17 - The Miller HouseThe old house was waiting.

The place where my childhood had begun.

The place where Meridian had hidden its first secrets.

The place that supposedly burned down eleven years ago.

Evan was inside.

Daniel's fate unknown.

Claire beside me.

Noah behind us.

We entered through the front door.

The house looked exactly as it had when I was a child.

Except for one thing.

There were no family photographs.

Only mirrors.

Dozens of them.

Every wall.

Every doorway.

Every mirror reflected a different moment from my life.

My first day at school.

My graduation.

The day Daniel disappeared.

My mother's funeral.

My academy graduation.

Someone had reconstructed my entire life.

A speaker crackled.

My father's voice.

"Every memory is a doorway."

I looked around.

"Where's Evan?"

"Downstairs."

"What do you want?"

"You."

"Why?"

"Because you are the original."

I felt a cold pressure in my chest.

"Original what?"

"The first successful identity transfer."

Noah whispered:

"They're saying you weren't born a normal child."

I turned.

"What?"

He shook his head.

"I don't know."

Claire grabbed my arm.

"Don't listen to him."

A door opened.

Evan stepped out.

He was holding the brass key.

"Jack."

I ran toward him.

"I'm here."

He looked relieved.

Then I noticed blood on his shirt.

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

"Whose blood?"

He looked behind him.

"His."

Daniel stumbled from the basement.

Alive.

Barely.

I caught him.

"Where were you?"

"I found Dad."

"What happened?"

Daniel looked at me.

"He told me the truth."

"What truth?"

Daniel swallowed.

"You are not his biological son."

Everything went silent.

"What?"

"Our father created you."

"Created me?"

"Your DNA was assembled from three people."

My head spun.

"Who?"

Daniel looked at Evan.

"Daniel."

He shook his head.

"Me."

I froze.

"Your mother."

He looked at Claire.

"And someone else."

"Who?"

Daniel's voice dropped.

"Subject Zero."

My father.

I couldn't breathe.

"That's impossible."

"They used his genetic material to stabilize yours."

"No."

Daniel grabbed my shoulder.

"Listen."

"I said no!"

My voice echoed through the room.

Evan flinched.

I immediately lowered my voice.

"Why would they make me?"

Daniel whispered:

"Because they wanted a person who could carry memories from multiple identities."

"What memories?"

"Everyone they couldn't control."

My father had not built a child.

He had built a vault.

A living archive.

I suddenly understood the key.

"It isn't a key to a room."

Daniel nodded.

"It's a trigger."

"For what?"

"Your memories."

The brass key was not mechanical.

It was biometric.

Something inside my body recognized it.

Evan held it toward me.

"Your dad said you need to remember."

"I don't want to."

"You have to."

A door slammed upstairs.

Then another.

Meridian agents surrounded the house.

Claire looked at me.

"They're here."

My father appeared on the television.

"You have five minutes."

"For what?"

"To remember."

"If I don't?"

He smiled.

"Then Evan dies."

The screen went black.

Evan looked at me.

"Jack."

"What?"

"Your memory is the map."

Then he placed the key against my palm.

The moment it touched my skin, I collapsed.

And suddenly I remembered everything.

Including the day Daniel disappeared.

I had been there.

May you like

I had watched him get into the car.

And I had opened the door.
