Chapter 11 - The Woman Behind the FaceElliot tore away from the creature.

He ran toward Claire.
The creature screamed.
Its face distorted.
Black veins spread across its skin.
Elliot reached his mother.
She collapsed against him.
“You came back.”
“I know who I am now.”
Claire smiled through tears.
“No.”
Elliot frowned.
“I know what I am.”
Claire shook her head.
“You still don't know who you came from.”
Evelyn stepped from the shadows.
“That doesn't matter.”
Claire looked at her.
“It matters to him.”
Evelyn smiled.
“For the first time, you are telling the truth.”
Elliot stood.
“Tell me.”
Evelyn became quiet.
“You were built using fragments of seven people.”
Elliot stared.
“Seven?”
“Seven minds.”
“Whose?”
“Daniel.”
“Claire?”
“No.”
Elliot looked horrified.
“Then whose?”
Evelyn smiled.
“People who died here.”
Noah stepped forward.
“You forgot the eighth.”
Evelyn's smile disappeared.
Noah continued.
“Me.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“You were never supposed to survive.”
“But I did.”
“No.”
Noah touched Elliot's shoulder.
“You did not create Elliot alone.”
Evelyn's expression hardened.
“Noah.”
“You created the body.”
He looked at Claire.
“She gave it life.”
“And I gave it a soul.”
Noah looked at Elliot.
“No.”
He pointed toward the red toy car.
“He did.”
Elliot stared.
The toy car began moving.
By itself.
It rolled across the floor.
Then stopped in front of him.
A tiny hidden compartment opened underneath.
Inside was a cassette tape.
Claire gasped.
“Daniel's recording.”
Elliot picked it up.
A voice crackled through the speaker.
Daniel.
“If you're hearing this, then Elliot has survived.”
Elliot's heart stopped.
“Claire, I know you thought you were saving Noah.”
Static.
“But you need to understand what the machine really did.”
A pause.
“It didn't copy consciousness.”
Another pause.
“It connected consciousness.”
Evelyn's face changed.
Daniel continued.
“Every person who died in the facility became part of the system.”
Elliot looked around.
“All of them.”
Daniel's voice became softer.
“And Elliot wasn't the vessel.”
The recording stopped.
Elliot stared at the machine.
“What was he?”
Claire whispered:
“The key.”
Suddenly, the creature lunged.
Noah blocked it.
The impact threw him across the room.
Elliot screamed.
“Noah!”
The creature turned toward him.
Its face split open into a grotesque grin.
“Now you understand.”
It crawled toward him.
“You were never meant to escape.”
Elliot grabbed the red toy car.
The moment he touched it, every voice in the house screamed.
The creature stopped.
For the first time, it looked afraid.
Elliot smiled.
“Why are you scared of a toy?”
The creature whispered:
“Because that toy belonged to the first child.”
“Who?”
May you like
The creature backed away.
“The one who built us.”
