CHAPTER 15 THE LAST SECRET

The steel door opened another inch.

Then another.

A cold breath of air rushed through the mansion.

Nobody moved.

Gavin stood frozen beside Victor, who was still bleeding on the marble floor.

Taylor clung to Gavin's jacket.

“Daddy…”

The voice came again from inside the vault.

Gavin's face went pale.

“That isn't real.”

Augustus smiled.

“Everything you've heard tonight is real.”

“No.”

Gavin stared into the darkness.

“That voice is mine.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Augustus stepped closer.

“Because twenty-two years ago, the vault recorded the night you were born.”

Gavin looked at Richard.

Richard's face had collapsed.

“You knew about this.”

Richard nodded.

“I tried to destroy it.”

“But you didn't.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I couldn't.”

The door opened completely.

Inside was a circular chamber.

Unlike the rest of the mansion, the room looked almost untouched by time.

A single chair sat in the center.

Around it were dozens of old monitors.

On the walls were photographs.

Gavin walked inside.

Every photograph showed the same three infants.

Himself.

The original Gavin.

Taylor.

But then he saw something that made his heart stop.

A fourth infant.

A little girl.

Gavin stared.

“Who is she?”

Nobody answered.

He turned toward Augustus.

“You said there were three.”

“There were.”

“Then why is there a fourth?”

Augustus smiled.

“Because she was the reason the three existed.”

Gavin looked back at the photograph.

The baby had a small birthmark beneath her left eye.

He had seen that mark before.

On someone.

Someone very close to him.

His eyes moved toward Priscilla.

She was staring at the photograph.

Gavin's voice became quiet.

“Priscilla?”

She began crying.

Gavin's heart sank.

“That's you.”

Priscilla nodded.

“I was the fourth child.”

The room fell silent.

Gavin stared.

“You knew?”

“I remembered when I was older.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I was terrified.”

“Of Augustus?”

Priscilla nodded.

“He took me when I was six.”

Gavin looked at Augustus.

“You kidnapped her.”

“I protected her.”

“Everyone uses that word.”

Augustus ignored him.

“Priscilla was the first successful genetic match.”

Gavin frowned.

“For what?”

“The trust.”

Priscilla wiped her tears.

“My blood could open it.”

Augustus nodded.

“But there was a problem.”

Gavin looked at him.

“What?”

“She wasn't a Roberson.”

Gavin stared.

“She was Catherine's daughter.”

Catherine stepped forward.

“I had two children.”

Gavin froze.

“Two?”

Catherine nodded.

“You…”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Had you.”

She pointed toward Priscilla.

“And you.”

Gavin's chest tightened.

“Priscilla is my sister?”

“Yes.”

Priscilla looked at him.

“I didn't know until three years ago.”

Gavin shook his head.

Three years.

The engagement.

The investigation.

Taylor's birth.

Everything suddenly connected.

“You came into my life because you found out.”

“Yes.”

“You weren't trying to marry me.”

“No.”

“You were trying to protect me.”

“Yes.”

“And Taylor…”

“Is your sister too.”

Gavin looked toward the little girl.

Taylor looked confused.

“I'm his sister?”

Catherine nodded.

“Yes.”

Taylor smiled faintly.

“Then Mr. Gavin is my brother?”

Gavin knelt and took her hand.

“Yes.”

Her little fingers tightened around his.

“Good.”

For the first time that night, Gavin smiled.

“Good.”

Then Augustus laughed.

Everyone turned.

“You still don't understand.”

Gavin stood.

“What now?”

Augustus pointed toward the center of the vault.

“Blood is only the beginning.”

A monitor switched on.

A video began playing.

The footage was grainy.

Twenty-two years old.

A hospital room.

A young Catherine stood beside a bed.

Evelyn was there.

Richard was there.

Victor was there.

And Augustus stood behind them.

Then a doctor entered carrying four newborn babies.

Gavin watched in horror.

The doctor placed them on four tables.

A voice from the recording spoke.

Augustus.

“Only one child will inherit.”

Catherine shouted:

“No.”

Augustus continued.

“The others are insurance.”

Richard stepped forward.

“You can't do this.”

Augustus raised a gun.

“Watch me.”

The recording continued.

Then something unexpected happened.

Evelyn grabbed one baby.

Catherine grabbed another.

Richard grabbed a third.

Victor grabbed the fourth.

They ran.

The video ended.

Gavin stared.

“So you all betrayed him.”

Richard nodded.

“We did.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“We couldn't let him kill you.”

Gavin looked at Augustus.

“Then why did you spend twenty-two years hunting us?”

Augustus's expression became cold.

“Because they stole my heirs.”

“No.”

Gavin shook his head.

“They saved children.”

Augustus raised his gun.

“You know nothing.”

Gavin stepped forward.

“I know enough.”

He looked around the vault.

“All those people you killed.”

He pointed toward the files.

“All those families you destroyed.”

Then toward Taylor.

“You hunted a three-year-old.”

His voice hardened.

“And for what?”

Augustus stared at him.

“For an empire.”

Gavin laughed.

“An empire?”

He looked at the screens.

“Look at this room.”

“Do you know what I see?”

Augustus said nothing.

“A graveyard.”

Silence.

Gavin continued.

“You didn't build an empire.”

“You built a prison.”

Augustus's hand trembled.

Then Victor suddenly stood.

Blood still soaking his shirt.

He raised his weapon.

“It's over.”

Augustus turned.

Victor fired.

The bullet struck Augustus's shoulder.

Augustus staggered.

Security guards raised their weapons.

But before they could fire, every monitor in the vault suddenly turned black.

Then one message appeared:

EVIDENCE UPLOAD: 100%

Gavin stared.

“What?”

Priscilla smiled through her tears.

“I did it.”

Gavin looked at her.

“What did you do?”

“I sent everything.”

“The files?”

“The financial records.”

“The blackmail?”

“Yes.”

“The evidence against Augustus?”

“All of it.”

Gavin's eyes widened.

“To who?”

Priscilla looked at the cameras.

“Everyone.”

Within seconds, phones began ringing throughout the mansion.

Augustus's expression changed.

“What have you done?”

Priscilla answered:

“Thirty guests from the engagement party received the files.”

Gavin stared.

“The politicians?”

“Yes.”

“The CEOs?”

“Yes.”

“The police?”

“Yes.”

“The press?”

“Yes.”

Augustus looked toward the monitor.

His empire was collapsing in real time.

His secrets were no longer secrets.

His leverage was gone.

For the first time, Augustus looked old.

Truly old.

He lowered his weapon.

“You think you've won?”

Gavin looked at him.

“No.”

Augustus smiled.

“Good.”

“Because this isn't about winning.”

Gavin walked toward Taylor.

“It’s about ending this.”

Suddenly, sirens could be heard outside.

Hundreds of them.

Police.

Federal agents.

News helicopters.

The mansion was surrounded.

Augustus looked toward the windows.

Then back at Gavin.

“You'll regret this.”

Gavin shook his head.

“No.”

“I created you.”

Gavin looked at him.

“No.”

“You carry my blood.”

“I carry my family's mistakes.”

He paused.

“But I don't have to repeat them.”

Augustus was arrested minutes later.

Catherine surrendered.

Callahan testified.

Victor survived.

Richard finally confessed everything.

The Roberson empire was placed under investigation.

Millions were frozen.

Dozens of powerful people resigned.

The black folder Evelyn had carried into the engagement party became the beginning of the largest financial scandal San Diego had ever seen.

But Gavin didn't care about the headlines.

He cared about Taylor.

Three weeks later, he sat in the backyard of a quiet house far from the Roberson estate.

Taylor was drawing with crayons.

Priscilla sat beside her.

Evelyn was making coffee.

Richard was teaching the original Gavin how to play chess.

For the first time, nobody was hiding.

Taylor looked up.

“Gavin?”

“Yes?”

“Can I call you brother?”

Gavin smiled.

“You can call me anything.”

She thought for a moment.

“Brother Gavin.”

He laughed.

“That's terrible.”

Taylor giggled.

Then she climbed into his lap.

“I like it.”

Gavin looked toward the sunset.

His empire was gone.

His reputation had changed.

His family had been torn apart and rebuilt.

But he finally knew who he was.

Not Augustus's heir.

Not a replacement.

Not a weapon.

Not a pawn.

Just Gavin.

A man who had spent twenty-two years searching for the truth.

And found a family waiting at the end of it.

Then his phone rang.

Gavin answered.

“Hello?”

A lawyer's voice came through.

“Mr. Roberson, there's one final issue.”

Gavin frowned.

“What?”

“The fourth vault.”

Gavin's smile disappeared.

“What fourth vault?”

Silence.

Then the lawyer whispered:

“The one Augustus never knew existed.”

Gavin slowly stood.

“Where?”

The lawyer answered:

“Under your childhood home.”

Gavin looked toward the house.

Taylor was still drawing.

The original Gavin was laughing.

Evelyn was pouring coffee.

Everything was peaceful.

Too peaceful.

Then the lawyer said:

“There's one more thing.”

Gavin waited.

“The vault opened itself.”

Gavin's blood ran cold.

“What's inside?”

The lawyer hesitated.

“A letter.”

“From whom?”

“The handwriting was identified.”

Gavin's heart began pounding.

“Whose?”

The lawyer whispered:

“Your real mother.”

Gavin looked toward Taylor.

Then toward the house.

And finally toward the darkening sky.

For twenty-two years, he had believed the truth was something buried in the past.

He was wrong.

The truth had been waiting beneath his childhood home.

And this time…

May you like

there was no one left to tell him what he would find.
