Chapter 15 - WHEN THE DRAGON BOWEDThe Heir Who Burned the ThroneSix months later, the Vescari empire was gone.

Not overnight.

Not cleanly.

Companies were sold.

Accounts were frozen.

Illegal operations exposed.

Names that had lived in whispers appeared on public records.

People who had believed they were untouchable discovered that paper was sometimes more powerful than a gun.

Sofia went to trial.

Adrian survived.

He testified.

Victor's existence was confirmed.

Isabella's records were reopened.

And Elena stopped looking over her shoulder every time a car slowed outside the house.

For the first time in twenty years, she slept with the curtains open.

Leo grew.

He laughed constantly.

And he still reached for Alina whenever she entered the room.

Matteo never understood why.

Neither did she.

Maybe babies recognized safety.

Maybe blood remembered what people tried to erase.

Or maybe some connections existed long before language.

One evening, Alina stood on the balcony of the old Vescari mansion.

The house was empty.

The furniture had been removed.

The portraits had been taken down.

Only one painting remained.

Mara Vescari.

The original dragon.

A woman standing alone with the symbol painted behind her.

Matteo joined Alina.

"You could sell this place."

"I know."

"You could keep it."

"I know."

"You could do anything."

Alina looked at him.

"That's the problem."

He smiled.

"Too much freedom?"

"Too much history."

He leaned against the railing.

"You don't have to become them."

"I know."

"You don't owe the family anything."

"I know."

Then he looked at her.

"But you do have one thing left to decide."

"What?"

"The dragon."

Alina touched the pendant.

"What about it?"

Matteo's expression became serious.

"The old organization used the dragon as a symbol."

"So?"

"So thousands of people still recognize it."

"And?"

"They believe whoever wears it owns the empire."

Alina removed the pendant.

She looked at it for a long moment.

Then walked toward the fireplace.

Matteo watched.

She dropped it into the flames.

The metal hissed.

Blackened.

Cracked.

The dragon disappeared.

Matteo exhaled.

"That's one way to make a point."

Alina smiled.

"I don't want their throne."

"What do you want?"

She looked toward the hallway.

Leo's laughter echoed from the next room.

"A family."

Matteo nodded.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

"What?"

Alina watched.

"Where?"

He hung up.

"Gabriel."

"What happened?"

"He disappeared."

Again.

They found his hospital room empty.

No guards hurt.

No cameras disabled.

Nothing stolen.

Just a note on the bed.

Alina read it.

Her father had written only one sentence.

The dragon was never the symbol.

She turned the page.

There was another line.

It was the map.

Alina stared.

"What map?"

Matteo took the note.

On the reverse side was a drawing.

An ancient dragon.

Three cities marked beneath its wings.

And one final location circled in red.

A place neither of them recognized.

Then Alina saw the name written beneath it.

MARINO.

Her mother's maiden name.

She looked up.

"Mom."

Elena appeared in the doorway.

One glance at the paper.

And all the color drained from her face.

"No."

Alina stood.

"What is it?"

Elena backed away.

"Where did you get that?"

"Gabriel left it."

Her mother shook her head.

"That's impossible."

"Mom."

Elena whispered:

"Because that map was buried with your grandfather."

Silence.

Matteo looked toward the dark windows.

Somewhere outside, a car engine started.

Slow.

Patient.

Waiting.

Alina folded the note.

And for the first time in her life, she understood the truth her mother had never been able to tell her.

She had not spent twenty years running from the dragon.

She had spent twenty years running from what was hidden beneath it.

The engine outside revved once.

Then disappeared into the night.

And on the balcony railing, where no one had been standing a second earlier, someone had left a black rose.

Wrapped around its stem was a tiny brass dragon.

The same dragon Leo had reached for the night everything began.

Alina touched it.

And the phone in her hand rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A man's voice spoke from the darkness.

"You burned the throne."

A pause.

"Now come find the kingdom."

The call ended.

Alina looked at Matteo.

May you like

Neither spoke.

Because somewhere beyond the city, another part of the Vescari story had just opened its eyes.
