Chapter 15 - What She ChoseNatasha could not speak.

The room seemed to shrink around her.
Leo's face was empty.
Viktor smiled like a man who had finally reached the end of a very long game.
"Don't look so surprised."
Natasha's hand covered her stomach.
"You said Leo was your son."
"He is."
"Then how could my baby be yours?"
Viktor's expression changed.
Not much.
Just enough.
It was the look of a man who enjoyed watching people understand too late.
"Because Leo isn't the child's father."
Natasha shook her head.
"You're lying."
"Ask Elena."
Everyone looked at Natasha's mother.
Elena's tears fell silently.
"I tried to stop this."
"Who is the father?"
Elena whispered a name.
And Natasha almost collapsed.
It was not Leo.
It was not Viktor.
It was a dead man.
A man Natasha had met once.
A man who had worked for Leo.
A man who had died three months earlier.
Marcus.
Leo turned toward her.
"What?"
Natasha stared at him.
"Marcus."
Marcus stood frozen.
"No."
Elena shook her head.
"Not Marcus."
Natasha's face twisted with confusion.
"Then who?"
Elena looked at Viktor.
Viktor smiled.
"Do you know why your mother was hidden?"
Natasha shook her head.
"Because she knew the truth about Leo."
"What truth?"
Viktor walked closer.
"Leo is not my son."
Leo's eyes hardened.
"Stop."
"He's Carlo's son."
Silence.
"Carlo was his biological father."
The grandmother closed her eyes.
"Viktor."
He ignored her.
"Leo's blood carries the Tomlin line."
Natasha's mind raced.
She looked at the contract.
The heir needed Tomlin blood.
Leo had it.
The baby was his.
Everything suddenly aligned.
The paternity scare had been another lie.
"Then why did you say..."
Viktor smiled.
"To break you."
He looked at Leo.
"I wanted you to doubt her."
Leo stepped toward him.
"Why?"
"Because a man with nothing left is easy to control."
Leo raised his gun.
Viktor spread his arms.
"Go ahead."
Natasha stepped between them.
"No."
Viktor laughed.
"You still protect him."
Natasha looked at Leo.
"For the first time, because I choose to."
Leo's eyes filled with emotion.
Not fear.
Not power.
Something simpler.
Love.
Natasha turned toward the grandmother.
"Where is the dissolution?"
The old woman handed it to her.
Natasha signed.
Her hand did not shake.
One page.
Then another.
The empire began dying with the stroke of a pen.
Accounts would freeze.
Properties would be sold.
The network would collapse.
The Tomlin name would become history.
Viktor lunged.
Leo fired.
The shot struck Viktor in the shoulder.
He fell.
Police sirens sounded in the distance.
Marcus entered with federal agents behind him.
Natasha stared.
"What?"
Marcus exhaled.
"Your grandmother called them."
The grandmother smiled.
"You wanted freedom."
She looked at Leo.
"So did he."
Leo lowered his gun.
For the first time, there was no army behind him.
No empire.
No men waiting for orders.
Just a man.
And a woman.
And the child they had nearly destroyed everything to protect.
Months later, snow covered Chicago.
Natasha stood in a small house outside the city.
There were no guards.
No bulletproof windows.
No marble hallways.
Just morning light.
A crib sat beside the bed.
Leo entered carrying a mug of coffee.
"She's awake."
Natasha smiled.
Their daughter was tiny.
Perfect.
Leo held her carefully.
"What should we name her?"
Natasha looked at the child.
Then at him.
"Something that doesn't belong to an empire."
Leo nodded.
"Any ideas?"
Natasha smiled.
"Emma."
He looked at the baby.
"Emma Tomlin."
Natasha shook her head.
"No."
She touched the child's cheek.
"Emma Hale."
Leo understood.
No Tomlin.
No Volkov.
No blood oath.
No empire.
Just a name.
A life.
A choice.
He kissed Natasha's forehead.
Then looked out the window at Chicago.
"The family will come looking."
"Let them."
"They won't stop."
"I know."
He looked at her.
"Are you scared?"
Natasha smiled.
"Every day."
Leo took her hand.
"So am I."
Outside, snow began falling over the city that had once owned them.
Inside, their daughter slept.
For the first time, there were no men guarding the doors.
No guns beneath the pillows.
No orders.
No contracts.
No one telling Natasha what she belonged to.
Then Leo's phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
"What?"
Natasha watched him.
"Who is it?"
Leo slowly lowered the phone.
"It's the hospital."
Her heart stopped.
"Why?"
Leo looked at the baby.
Then at Natasha.
"They found something in the old medical records."
"What?"
He swallowed.
"The embryo Claire implanted months ago..."
Natasha stared.
"Wasn't destroyed."
Silence.
Leo's phone rang again.
A second message appeared.
THERE WERE TWO HEARTBEATS.
He looked at Natasha.
May you like
And somewhere, in a city they had believed they escaped, another baby cried.
THE END... OR THE BEGINNING.
