Chapter 1 - THE FALLThe ultrasound photo crackled in Eleanor Vance’s hand.

“Give it back,” Sarah whispered, one hand protecting her eight-month pregnant belly.
Eleanor Vance, the billionaire matriarch of the Vance family, stood beside the marble railing of the mansion’s upper landing as though the entire house belonged to her.
In truth, it did.
At least, that was what everyone believed.
She smiled coldly.
“You don’t belong in this family.”
Her eyes dropped toward Sarah’s stomach.
“Neither does that baby.”
Sarah’s face drained of color.
“This is your grandchild.”
Eleanor looked at the ultrasound one last time.
“No.”
She tore it in half.
Then she tore it again.
The tiny image of an unborn child disappeared beneath her fingers.
The pieces floated over the railing.
“Pick them up,” Eleanor said.
Sarah stared at her in disbelief.
“How can you do this?”
Eleanor’s expression hardened.
“You should have learned your place before you married my son.”
Sarah took one trembling step forward.
“I love Daniel.”
“You trapped Daniel.”
“I never trapped anyone.”
“You think being pregnant makes you untouchable?”
Eleanor stepped closer.
Sarah instinctively backed away.
One hand remained over her belly.
“Please,” Sarah whispered. “Not now.”
Eleanor’s eyes flicked toward the hallway.
Two maids were standing nearby.
Three more servants were at the far staircase.
All of them looked down.
Nobody moved.
Eleanor noticed.
She smiled.
“Go on,” she said softly. “Tell them what happened.”
Sarah swallowed.
“You pushed me here.”
“I did not touch you.”
“You know you did.”
Eleanor leaned closer.
“You are very emotional lately. Pregnancy does strange things to women.”
Sarah’s breathing became shallow.
Then Eleanor placed both hands on Sarah’s shoulders.
Sarah froze.
“You have one chance,” Eleanor whispered.
“Leave Daniel.”
Sarah stared into her eyes.
“No.”
Eleanor’s smile vanished.
Her hands suddenly slammed into Sarah’s shoulders.
Sarah stumbled.
Her heel slipped against the polished marble.
She reached for the railing.
Missed.
Her body tipped backward.
The world seemed to stop.
Sarah gasped.
Then she fell.
The maids screamed.
But before Sarah could hit the marble floor below, a figure burst from beneath the staircase.
Arthur.
The Vance family’s butler of forty years.
He lunged forward.
His shoulder struck the edge of the banister.
His arms wrapped around Sarah’s body.
The impact drove him to one knee.
Sarah cried out.
Her stomach tightened painfully.
“Mrs. Vance!”
Arthur held her carefully.
“Stay still.”
Sarah trembled.
“Arthur…”
“I’ve got you.”
Above them, Eleanor stood completely motionless.
Her face had lost all color.
Arthur slowly helped Sarah onto the lower landing.
He checked her breathing.
Then he looked at the blood beginning to stain the edge of Sarah’s dress.
“Someone call an ambulance.”
One maid pulled out her phone.
Eleanor snapped:
“No.”
Arthur turned.
The entire mansion went silent.
Eleanor descended two steps.
“There is no need to create a scandal. Mrs. Vance merely lost her balance.”
Arthur stared at her.
Sarah looked up from his arms.
“She pushed me.”
Eleanor laughed softly.
“You fell.”
Arthur’s jaw tightened.
After four decades serving the Vance family, he had seen Eleanor crush competitors, destroy marriages, buy judges, threaten employees, and make entire businesses disappear.
But he had never seen her put her hands on a pregnant woman.
He reached inside his jacket.
Pulled out his phone.
Dialed three numbers.
“911.”
Eleanor’s face turned pale.
“Arthur.”
He said nothing.
“Hang up.”
Arthur looked directly at her.
“No.”
The dispatcher answered.
“Emergency services. What is your location?”
Arthur spoke calmly.
“Vance Manor. We have an injured pregnant woman. Eight months.”
Eleanor rushed down the stairs.
“You are making a terrible mistake.”
Arthur didn’t blink.
“The suspect is still inside the house.”
Eleanor stopped.
Sarah stared at him.
The maids stared at him.
Nobody breathed.
Then Arthur added one sentence that changed everything.
“And I have video.”
May you like
Eleanor’s lips parted.
For the first time that night, the billionaire matriarch looked afraid.
