Chapter 1 - THE NIGHT THE MONEY APPEAREDThe first time David saw the money, he thought he was dreaming.

It was nearly midnight.
Rain scratched against the windows of the old house while thunder rolled somewhere beyond the hills. David sat alone in the living room, staring at the television without actually watching it.
Then Stella called his name.
“David.”
Her voice came from upstairs.
He looked toward the ceiling.
“What?”
“Come here.”
There was something strange in her voice.
Not fear.
Not excitement.
Something in between.
David climbed the stairs.
When he reached the bedroom, he stopped.
Stella was standing beside the wardrobe with both doors open.
Stacks of cash filled every shelf.
Hundreds.
Thousands.
Bundles of crisp banknotes packed so tightly that the wardrobe doors barely closed.
David stared.
“Where did you get all this?”
Stella smiled.
For the first time in years, her face looked completely free of worry.
“This,” she whispered, “is what happens when you stop being poor.”
David stepped inside.
His mother, Linda, sat on the edge of the bed.
She looked older than she had that morning.
Much older.
But there was a strange satisfaction in her eyes.
“You should be happy,” Linda said.
“Happy?”
“You've spent your whole life counting coins. Now you can count millions.”
David picked up one bundle.
The notes were real.
He checked the serial numbers.
He even called his friend Marcus, who worked at a bank.
Marcus confirmed the notes were legitimate.
That should have relieved David.
Instead, it made his stomach tighten.
Because no one had explained where the money came from.
“Stella,” David said slowly, “what did you do?”
She looked at him.
“You don't want to know.”
“I absolutely want to know.”
Linda laughed.
“Your sister finally learned how the world works.”
David turned toward his mother.
“What does that mean?”
She didn't answer.
Stella walked toward the window.
Lightning flashed across the sky.
“You remember Mr. Hale?” she asked.
David frowned.
“The investor?”
“Yes.”
“The man who disappeared last month?”
Stella nodded.
“He left something behind.”
“What?”
She turned.
“An opportunity.”
David noticed something on her wrist.
A thin black bracelet.
He had never seen it before.
Around the bracelet were tiny symbols, almost like letters from a language he didn't recognize.
“What is that?”
Stella covered it with her sleeve.
“Nothing.”
David's eyes narrowed.
He wanted to press her.
Instead, he looked at the money.
He could already imagine the possibilities.
A new house.
A new car.
His debts gone.
His mother's medical bills paid.
For the first time in years, he might actually sleep without worrying about tomorrow.
Then came the knock.
Three slow knocks against the front door.
Everyone went silent.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
David looked toward Stella.
“Were you expecting someone?”
She didn't answer.
Linda's expression had changed.
The satisfaction was gone.
“Don't open it,” she whispered.
Another knock.
This time harder.
David stepped toward the staircase.
“Who is it?”
No answer.
He looked through the curtain.
No one stood outside.
Only rain.
Then his phone vibrated.
A text message.
UNKNOWN NUMBER:
YOU TOOK WHAT WASN'T YOURS.
David's blood ran cold.
Another message arrived.
THE HOUSE ALWAYS COLLECTS.
He looked at Stella.
She had gone pale.
“Who sent that?”
She didn't answer.
“Stella?”
Her lips trembled.
Then she whispered something that made David's heart stop.
“It wasn't supposed to happen this soon.”
“What wasn't?”
Before she could respond, every light in the house went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Then, from upstairs, came the sound of someone walking.
Slowly.
One step at a time.
Bare feet against the wooden floor.
David froze.
His mother began praying.
Stella grabbed his arm.
“Don't look upstairs.”
Another step.
Closer.
Then another.
The footsteps reached the staircase.
David heard breathing.
Someone was standing just beyond the darkness.
He could feel eyes watching them.
And then a woman's voice whispered from the top of the stairs.
“Give it back.”
David had never heard that voice before.
But Stella had.
Because the moment she heard it, she screamed.

And somewhere inside the wardrobe...
something knocked from the other side.
