Chapter 10 - The Woman They BuriedMadeline exposed the secret she thought would destroy me.

The council chamber went silent.

Madeline lifted a folder.

“Your mother stole from Blackridge.”

A murmur spread.

Nathaniel's face remained calm.

Madeline continued.

“She betrayed the organization.”

I stared at her.

“She was murdered.”

Madeline smiled.

“That's not what the records say.”

She opened the folder.

Documents were projected onto a screen.

My mother's signature appeared.

Then another.

And another.

Transactions.

Transfers.

Payments.

Everything looked real.

People began whispering.

One council member said, “Fraud.”

Another said, “Her daughter should not inherit anything.”

Madeline looked at Nathaniel.

“This woman comes from criminals.”

Nathaniel stood.

“So do you.”

Madeline's smile disappeared.

“My family has never betrayed Blackridge.”

Nathaniel looked toward the screen.

“Your family's accounts say otherwise.”

The room froze.

He nodded toward one of his men.

Another screen appeared.

Bank transfers.

Millions moving through Madeline's family's shell companies.

Grant Holloway's name appeared.

Madeline went pale.

“You forged that.”

“No.”

Nathaniel looked at her.

“Your father did.”

Grant rose.

“Enough.”

Nathaniel ignored him.

I stepped closer to the screen.

The documents Madeline had shown contained one detail I recognized.

Payroll codes.

I worked payroll.

I knew the formatting.

“These aren't original.”

Everyone looked at me.

Madeline laughed.

“You're desperate.”

“No.”

I pointed toward the bottom corner.

“This code was discontinued three years ago.”

Silence.

“The signature page uses a payroll approval number from a system that didn't exist when my mother supposedly signed these documents.”

The council murmured.

Madeline's face changed.

I continued.

“Someone recreated these records.”

Grant's eyes met mine.

For one second, I saw pure hatred.

Then something else.

Fear.

I understood.

This wasn't about proving my mother innocent.

It was about proving who had forged the evidence.

Nathaniel stepped beside me.

“She has just demonstrated why she's entitled to the trust.”

The judge nodded.

Madeline looked furious.

Then she said something I didn't expect.

“Ask her why her mother really disappeared.”

My blood froze.

Madeline opened another file.

A photograph appeared.

My mother.

Standing with Grant.

And beside them was a newborn baby.

Me.

“Your mother didn't protect you,” Madeline said.

“She sold you.”

I stared.

“No.”

“She made a deal.”

Nathaniel looked at the photograph.

His expression darkened.

“What deal?”

Madeline smiled.

“She traded her daughter for Alexander Holloway's life.”

The room erupted in whispers.

My mother was brought into the chamber.

She saw the photograph.

Then broke down.

“That's not true.”

Madeline stepped toward her.

“Tell them.”

My mother shook her head.

“I never sold Emily.”

“Then tell them where Alexander was.”

My mother looked at me.

Her silence was devastating.

I whispered:

“Mom?”

She finally spoke.

“I made a deal.”

Nathaniel went still.

I felt the world collapse.

“What did you trade?”

May you like

My mother looked at me through tears.

“You.”
