Chapter 14 - The Army That Couldn't DieThe dead rose without making a sound.
Alex watched a woman she'd seen die moments earlier stand beside her own body.
The Vael soldiers moved in perfect synchronization.
Joren backed away.
"We have to leave."
Kael shook his head.
"They're not alive."
"They look alive."
"They're being controlled."
By the creature.
Alex understood.
"The signal."
The creature smiled.
"Exactly."
Daren stepped toward the army.
"They're connected."
"Yes."
"Then break the signal."
The creature laughed.
"You cannot."
Alex stared at it.
"I can."
The creature's smile vanished.
"What?"
"My mother taught me."
She remembered the melody.
But this time she changed it.
One note higher.
One lower.
Then silence.
The army stopped.
The creature's face changed.
Alex sang again.
The bodies fell.
All at once.
The beach became still.
The creature staggered.
"You should not know that."
Alex walked toward it.
"My mother did."
"Your mother was weak."
"No."
Alex shook her head.
"She was human."
The creature roared.
The sound blasted across the coast.
Kael fell.
Daren fell.
Joren collapsed.
Alex stayed standing.
She looked at the creature.
And suddenly understood.
The Roar was not a weapon.
It was a conversation.
She could hear it.
Every frequency.
Every memory.
Every thought.
She could hear the creature's fear.
Not fear of her.
Fear of being forgotten.
"You don't want to rule us."
The creature stared.
"You want someone to remember you."
Silence.
Alex stepped closer.
"You've been alone for thousands of years."
The creature's face changed.
"You killed millions."
"I was defending my kind."
"You created the Vael."
"To save you."
"You enslaved humans."
"To stop the awakening."
Alex stopped.
Then she said the one thing it didn't expect.
"I forgive you."
The creature froze.
Not because it was forgiven.
Because it had never heard those words.
Alex extended her hand.
"Then stop."
The creature stared at her palm.
The entire world seemed to hold its breath.
Finally it touched her hand.
The signal released.
Every machine on Earth turned off.
Every Vael weapon shut down.
Every surviving human felt something strange.
Silence.
True silence.
Then the creature began to fade.
"Why?"
Alex whispered.
"Because nobody should have to live forever as a prisoner."
The creature smiled.
"Your mother chose well."
Then it vanished.
The gate collapsed.
Kael rose slowly.
Daren sat in the sand.
Joren looked toward the horizon.
The ocean was blue again.
For the first time in generations, there was no Roar.
Alex looked at Kael.
"What happens now?"
He looked at the ruined world.
"We rebuild."
Daren smiled.
"That's going to take a while."
Alex laughed.
Then the ground shook.
Kael's smile disappeared.
From beneath the ocean came a new signal.
Not the Roar.
Something else.
A message.
Three words appeared on every remaining screen across the planet.
THE DOOR WAS ONE.
Alex stared.
"What does that mean?"
Kael looked toward the horizon.
"I don't know."
