Chapter 15 - THE THIRD HEIRBy sunrise, the Valenti mansion was surrounded by police.

News helicopters circled overhead.

The family name had become a national scandal.

Bank accounts were frozen.

Executives were questioned.

Officials resigned.

But Luca heard none of it.

He stood in the center of the ruined mansion holding the photograph of the third heir.

A child.

Eight years old.

Maybe nine.

Unknown name.

Unknown mother.

Unknown location.

A living secret.

Elena stood beside him.

“You can't save everyone.”

“I know.”

“But you're going to try.”

“Yes.”

She looked at him.

“You sound like Victor.”

Luca smiled faintly.

“I'll take that as an insult.”

She laughed quietly.

It was the first real laugh either of them had shared in days.

Then Matteo entered.

“We found something.”

Luca turned.

“What?”

“The school.”

“And?”

“The boy isn't missing.”

Luca frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“He was never enrolled there.”

“What?”

“The photograph was staged.”

Elena looked at the picture.

“Then where was it taken?”

Matteo handed Luca another photograph.

Same boy.

Different location.

A hospital.

Then another.

An airport.

Then another.

A playground.

The boy appeared in different places over several years.

Luca stared.

“He's been moving.”

“Constantly.”

“Who is moving him?”

Matteo shook his head.

“We don't know.”

Rafael entered.

He looked exhausted.

“I do.”

Everyone turned.

Rafael looked at Elena.

“Your mother.”

Elena froze.

“She was supposed to be dead.”

“She was.”

“Then how?”

“She arranged the child's escape before she died.”

Luca stared at him.

“Why didn't she tell us?”

“Because she didn't trust anyone.”

“Not even you?”

“Especially me.”

“Why?”

Rafael looked away.

“Because she knew I would choose you.”

Elena's face softened.

“Over him?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he was the only heir your grandfather couldn't control.”

Luca looked at the photograph.

“So the third child was hidden.”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

“To survive.”

Luca turned to Matteo.

“Find him.”

“We already have.”

Luca looked up.

“What?”

Matteo pointed toward the driveway.

A small black car was parked outside.

The rear door opened.

A woman stepped out.

Luca recognized her immediately.

Older.

Gray hair.

Pale face.

But alive.

Elena whispered:

“My mother.”

The woman looked toward the mansion.

Then toward Elena.

Tears filled her eyes.

She crossed the driveway.

Elena ran toward her.

They embraced.

Neither spoke.

Luca stood still.

The woman finally looked at him.

“You look exactly like your father.”

Luca swallowed.

“Which one?”

She smiled sadly.

“Both.”

Then she turned toward Rafael.

“You failed.”

Rafael looked down.

“I know.”

Elena stepped back.

“Where is the child?”

Her mother looked at her.

“He's safe.”

“Where?”

“Somewhere your grandfather never thought to search.”

“Tell me.”

She took Elena's hand.

“Home.”

Elena frowned.

“What home?”

The woman looked toward Luca.

“Your home.”

Luca's expression changed.

She pointed toward the mansion.

“Behind your mother's portrait.”

They all returned to the main hall.

Luca removed the portrait from the wall.

Behind it was another hidden door.

He opened it.

Inside was a small bedroom.

A bed.

Books.

Toys.

A desk.

And a child sleeping peacefully.

Luca stared.

The boy slowly opened his eyes.

He looked at Elena.

Then at Luca.

Then at Rafael.

Finally, he smiled.

“I knew you'd come.”

Luca stepped forward.

“What’s your name?”

The boy hesitated.

“Leo.”

“Leo what?”

The child looked at his mother.

She nodded.

“Leo Valenti Russo.”

Luca blinked.

“What?”

Elena stared.

Leo looked between them.

“Mom said I couldn't tell anyone.”

Luca crouched.

“Tell me what?”

The boy pointed toward the desk.

There was a sealed envelope.

Luca opened it.

Inside was a photograph of three babies.

Luca.

Elena.

Leo.

Three children.

Three bloodlines.

But one detail made Luca's stomach drop.

The document beneath the photograph listed their births on the same day.

Same hospital.

Same mother.

Three children.

Not two.

Luca looked at Elena.

“This can't be possible.”

Her mother whispered:

“You were never twins.”

“You were triplets.”

Silence.

The final page contained a handwritten note.

The first two heirs inherited the blood.

The third inherited the key.

Luca looked at Leo.

“What key?”

The boy reached beneath his shirt.

He pulled out a small pendant.

The silver Valenti crest opened in his hand.

Inside was a tiny brass key.

Stamped with one number.

319.

Luca stared.

Room 319.

Elena stepped closer.

“There's another room.”

Leo nodded.

“Mom said it was the last one.”

“Where?”

The boy pointed to the floor.

Right beneath them.

Luca looked at Elena.

Then Rafael.

Then Matteo.

The mansion groaned.

A hidden mechanism moved beneath the floorboards.

A square panel slowly unlocked.

The staircase below disappeared into darkness.

And from somewhere underneath the house came a familiar sound.

Three slow knocks.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Everyone froze.

Luca looked at Leo.

“Who is down there?”

The boy smiled.

“My grandfather.”

Luca's blood ran cold.

“The patriarch is upstairs.”

Leo shook his head.

“Not that grandfather.”

He pointed into the darkness.

“The other one.”

Luca looked down the staircase.

A man's voice rose from the darkness.

Calm.

Patient.

Waiting.

“Finally.”

A pause.

“You found Room 319.”

Then the lights beneath the house turned on.

One by one.

Revealing a vast underground chamber.

Rows of files.

Hundreds of photographs.

And at the center of the room stood a man Luca had never seen before.

He looked exactly like Luca.

Same eyes.

Same jaw.

Same scar near the eyebrow.

He slowly turned.

And smiled.

“I've been waiting for my brothers and sister.”

The room went silent.

Luca stared.

Elena stopped breathing.

Rafael dropped his weapon.

Because the man standing at the bottom of the staircase was not the third heir.

He was the fourth.

And behind him, written across the wall in enormous black letters, were four words:

May you like

THERE WERE NEVER THREE.

THERE WERE FOUR.
