CHAPTER 2 — THE HOSPITAL RECORD

The old man stood beneath the crystal chandelier, holding the envelope like it contained a weapon.

Perhaps it did.

Because every person in the ballroom was staring at him.

Eleanor Whitmore couldn't move.

Her eyes remained fixed on the envelope.

"Where did you get that?" she whispered.

The old man swallowed.

"From St. Vincent's Hospital."

Eleanor's face tightened.

"That hospital closed twenty years ago."

"I know."

"Then how?"

The old man looked toward the ballroom doors.

"I spent the last six months looking for it."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

The old man finally looked at him.

"My name is Arthur Bell."

Daniel frowned.

"I don't know you."

"You weren't supposed to."

Arthur's eyes shifted toward Eleanor.

"Your mother made sure of that."

A wave of whispers moved through the guests.

Eleanor's voice hardened.

"Arthur, not here."

"Here is exactly where it needs to happen."

Arthur raised the envelope.

"Because thirty years ago, you were told your daughter died."

Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.

"I buried her."

"No."

Arthur shook his head.

"You buried an empty coffin."

Emily felt the room tilt.

She instinctively grabbed the edge of the ruined wedding dress.

"No..."

Daniel looked at Emily.

She was trembling.

He wanted to reach for her.

But he couldn't.

Not anymore.

Not after the possibility that she was his sister had entered his mind.

"Mother," he said quietly.

Eleanor didn't respond.

"Is it true?"

She closed her eyes.

"Daniel..."

"Is she my sister?"

Silence.

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Answer me."

Eleanor looked at him.

"I don't know."

"You just said she's your daughter."

"I said what I believe."

"That's not an answer."

Arthur stepped between them.

"Because Eleanor doesn't know the truth."

Daniel turned toward him.

"Then you do?"

Arthur nodded.

"I know part of it."

"Tell me."

Arthur looked at Emily.

"Not yet."

Daniel's voice rose.

"Why not?"

"Because if I tell you everything before she sees these records..."

Arthur glanced at Eleanor.

"...she may never recover from it."

Eleanor stared at him.

"What did you find?"

Arthur slowly opened the envelope.

Inside were several yellowed documents.

Hospital records.

Birth certificates.

A photograph.

And one small handwritten note.

Arthur removed the photograph first.

Eleanor saw it.

Her knees nearly gave way.

It was a photograph of a baby.

Wrapped in a pale pink blanket.

A tiny jade pendant hung around the baby's neck.

Eleanor covered her mouth.

"Rose."

Emily stared at the photograph.

The baby's eyes were closed.

But the pendant was unmistakable.

The same pendant now sitting in Emily's palm.

Daniel looked from the photograph to Emily.

His breathing became shallow.

"That's her?"

Arthur nodded.

"That photograph was taken three days after she was born."

Eleanor whispered:

"Who took it?"

Arthur hesitated.

"Your husband."

Eleanor's face changed.

"My husband?"

"Richard."

The name seemed to poison the air.

Richard Whitmore.

Eleanor's late husband.

The man she had loved.

The man she had mourned.

The man whose portrait still hung in the Whitmore mansion.

Arthur pulled out another document.

"This is the original birth record."

Eleanor took it.

Her hands shook.

The paper was old.

But the writing remained clear.

Mother: Eleanor Grace Whitmore.

Father: Richard James Whitmore.

Child: Rose Eleanor Whitmore.

Date of birth: March 14.

Eleanor stared at the page.

Then she looked at Emily.

"Your birthday."

Emily swallowed.

"March fourteenth."

The ballroom erupted again.

Emily's face went blank.

"My mother always told me I was born March fourteenth."

Eleanor closed her eyes.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"You're my daughter."

This time, there was no uncertainty in her voice.

No suspicion.

She knew.

Emily slowly stepped backward.

"Then why didn't you find me?"

Eleanor's face crumpled.

"I tried."

"You said you searched."

"I searched everywhere."

"For how long?"

"Years."

"Then how could you not find me?"

Eleanor couldn't answer.

Emily's voice broke.

"You were my mother."

"I know."

"You let me grow up believing someone else was my mother."

"I didn't know."

"You didn't know?"

Emily laughed bitterly.

"You didn't know whether your own child was alive?"

Eleanor flinched.

Emily's tears finally fell.

"I spent my entire life wondering why I never felt like I belonged anywhere."

She looked around the ballroom.

"Now I know."

Eleanor stepped toward her.

"Emily..."

"Don't."

Emily raised a hand.

"Don't call me that."

Eleanor stopped.

Daniel watched helplessly.

The woman he had planned to marry was standing across from him.

The woman who might be his sister.

He suddenly felt sick.

"Emily..."

She looked at him.

Daniel struggled to speak.

"I need to know something."

"What?"

"Are we..."

He couldn't finish.

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"I don't know."

Arthur interrupted.

"Neither do you."

Daniel turned.

"What does that mean?"

Arthur opened another document.

"This."

He handed it to Daniel.

Daniel looked down.

It was an adoption certificate.

His name was written across the top.

Daniel James Carter.

Not Whitmore.

His eyes widened.

"What?"

Eleanor whispered:

"No."

Daniel looked at her.

"My name wasn't always Whitmore?"

Eleanor shook her head.

Arthur nodded.

"You were adopted."

Daniel stared at the paper.

"When?"

"Twenty-five years ago."

"By Eleanor?"

"Yes."

"Who were my biological parents?"

Arthur didn't answer.

Daniel's fingers tightened around the document.

"Tell me."

Arthur looked at Eleanor.

She looked terrified.

Arthur finally said:

"Your biological mother was Margaret Carter."

Emily's breath caught.

"What?"

Arthur nodded.

"Margaret Carter."

Emily stepped forward.

"That's my mother."

Daniel stared at her.

"No."

Arthur continued.

"Margaret was not just your mother."

He looked at Daniel.

"She was his mother too."

The room went silent.

Emily felt the blood drain from her face.

Daniel shook his head.

"You're saying Margaret had two children?"

"Yes."

"Me and Emily?"

"Yes."

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

"Then I'm not your biological son."

Eleanor's lips trembled.

"No."

Daniel looked at Emily.

"And she's not my sister."

Arthur shook his head.

"No."

A terrible silence followed.

Daniel's eyes widened.

"Then..."

Arthur's expression became grim.

"You're not related by blood."

Emily covered her mouth.

Daniel closed his eyes.

For several seconds, neither of them moved.

The impossible had just become possible again.

But there was something else.

Something Arthur hadn't told them.

Eleanor saw it in his expression.

"What are you hiding?"

Arthur looked at her.

"I found another record."

"Which one?"

"The hospital transfer log."

Eleanor's face hardened.

"What does it say?"

Arthur slowly removed the final document from the envelope.

He placed it on the marble floor between them.

At the bottom of the page was a signature.

Eleanor recognized it instantly.

Her husband's.

Richard Whitmore.

Next to his signature were four words.

CHILD TRANSFERRED TO PRIVATE CARE.

Eleanor's voice became a whisper.

"Private care?"

Arthur nodded.

"Your daughter wasn't taken by a stranger."

"Then who took her?"

Arthur looked at Emily.

"Someone inside your household."

Eleanor's face went pale.

"Who?"

Arthur pointed to the signature beneath Richard's.

Eleanor stared.

She knew that name.

She had trusted that person for more than twenty years.

She had allowed them inside her home.

Inside her family.

Inside her children's lives.

Daniel noticed Eleanor's expression.

"Mother?"

She didn't answer.

Emily stepped closer.

"Who is it?"

Eleanor's fingers began trembling.

Then she whispered the name.

"Margaret Carter."

Emily froze.

"My mother?"

Arthur nodded.

"Your mother took you."

Emily shook her head.

"No."

"She disappeared with you that night."

"No."

"She changed your identity."

"No!"

Emily screamed.

The guests jumped.

"My mother loved me!"

Arthur's expression softened.

"I believe she did."

"Then why would she steal me?"

"Maybe she didn't."

Everyone looked at him.

Arthur slowly turned the document over.

There was another note written on the back.

A note Eleanor had never seen.

A note written by Richard.

Only six words.

MARGARET DID NOT TAKE THE CHILD.

Eleanor stopped breathing.

Arthur continued.

"Someone wanted you to believe she did."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Who?"

Arthur looked toward the ballroom entrance.

His face suddenly became terrified.

"I don't know."

A woman's voice came from behind them.

"I do."

Everyone turned.

An elderly woman stood near the doors.

She was wearing a dark blue dress.

Her hair was white.

Her face was calm.

Too calm.

Eleanor's eyes widened.

"Victoria?"

Victoria smiled.

"Hello, Eleanor."

Emily looked at Eleanor.

"Who is she?"

Eleanor couldn't speak.

Because Victoria had been her closest friend for thirty years.

She had helped Eleanor survive the loss of Rose.

She had comforted her after Richard's death.

She had stood beside Eleanor at the funeral.

She had even helped raise Daniel.

And now she was standing in the ballroom.

Smiling.

Arthur stepped backward.

"Victoria..."

She looked at him.

"You should have left the past buried."

Arthur's face turned pale.

Daniel stepped in front of Emily.

"What did you do?"

Victoria's smile disappeared.

"I did what Eleanor couldn't."

"What?"

"I protected this family."

Eleanor's voice trembled.

"Protected us from what?"

Victoria looked directly at Emily.

"From the truth."

Then she reached inside her handbag.

And pulled out a small cassette tape.

Eleanor stared at it.

She recognized the label.

Her husband's handwriting.

Richard's final recording.

Victoria held it up.

"Your husband left this for me the night before he died."

Eleanor whispered:

"What does it say?"

Victoria smiled.

"You really want to hear it?"

Nobody answered.

Victoria pressed the cassette against her palm.

"Because once you hear Richard's voice..."

Her eyes moved from Eleanor to Emily.

"...you will finally understand why your daughter disappeared."

The ballroom doors suddenly slammed shut.

CLICK.

Locked.

And from somewhere behind the guests came the sound of a man's voice.

A voice that should have been impossible to hear.

May you like

A voice belonging to a dead man.

"Eleanor... if you're hearing this, it means Rose has finally come home."
