Chapter 15 - Lumina looked exactly as it had the night I saved Leo.That was the cruelest part.

The same marble floor.

The same velvet booths.

The same chandelier hanging above the room.

Except now every exit was sealed.

No customers.

No waiters.

No music.

Only silence.

Adrian stood beside me.

Leo held his hand.

Daniel and Alex were behind us.

For once, nobody trusted anyone.

We reached the VIP booth.

I touched the marble.

A hidden scanner activated.

MASTER KEY DETECTED.

The floor opened.

A staircase descended into darkness.

Adrian looked at me.

"You don't have to do this."

"Yes, I do."

"Why?"

"Because if I don't, Hale will keep hunting Leo."

He looked at his son.

Then at me.

"I'll go first."

We descended.

The underground chamber was enormous.

Servers lined the walls.

Cables disappeared into the ceiling.

Screens showed thousands of lives.

Names.

Secrets.

Memories.

Echo.

Hale appeared on the main monitor.

"I knew you'd come."

I stared.

"You used me."

"I recruited you."

"You destroyed my family."

"No."

He smiled.

"Your family destroyed itself."

Adrian stepped forward.

"Let him go."

Hale laughed.

"This stopped being about you years ago."

He looked at Leo.

"The boy is the key."

Leo hid behind Adrian.

I stepped toward the terminal.

"What do you want?"

"Access."

"To what?"

"Everything."

I touched the console.

"What happens if I refuse?"

Hale looked at Leo.

"You know."

I swallowed.

"Then take me."

Adrian grabbed my wrist.

"No."

I looked at him.

"Trust me."

His eyes searched mine.

Then slowly, he let go.

I turned toward the terminal.

My mother had hidden the final sequence inside me.

I remembered.

One number.

Then another.

Then another.

The system accepted them.

ACCESS GRANTED.

Hale smiled.

"Finally."

The screens around us lit up.

Names.

Files.

Secrets.

Governments.

Police.

Banks.

Everything.

Then a red warning appeared.

SELF-DESTRUCT AVAILABLE.

Hale's smile disappeared.

"What did you do?"

I stared at the button.

My mother had left one final instruction.

Do not destroy the archive until Adrian is beside you.

He was.

I looked at him.

He understood.

"Nora."

"I'm ready."

Hale shouted.

"Stop her!"

Alex raised his gun.

Daniel raised his.

For one second, the room held still.

Then Alex shot Daniel.

Daniel fell.

Adrian fired at Alex.

The chamber exploded into gunfire.

I slammed my hand onto the command.

SELF-DESTRUCT INITIATED.

The alarms screamed.

Hale's voice filled the room.

"You have ten minutes."

Adrian grabbed Leo.

"Move!"

We ran.

Behind us, servers began exploding.

Fire raced along the cables.

Alex chased us.

He caught Adrian near the stairs.

They collided.

I pulled Leo away.

Alex raised his gun.

Adrian shoved Leo behind him.

The shot rang out.

Adrian collapsed.

"Adrian!"

My world stopped.

Blood spread across his chest.

Leo screamed.

I dropped beside him.

"Stay with me."

He grabbed my hand.

"I'll be fine."

"You better be."

He smiled weakly.

"You saved my son once."

I cried.

"You've been saving me ever since."

His eyes closed.

"No."

I grabbed his face.

"Adrian."

His eyes opened.

"I think..."

He took a breath.

"I think I love you."

Everything around us burned.

I leaned forward.

"You chose a terrible time to confess."

He smiled.

"I've never been good with timing."

Behind us, Alex raised his weapon.

I heard the click.

Then Leo stepped in front of Adrian.

"No."

Alex froze.

Leo looked at him.

"You hurt my Papa."

Alex's expression changed.

Something in the boy's voice stopped him.

Leo raised the plastic dinosaur.

A tiny red light blinked from its eye.

Alex's face went pale.

"What did Elena put in that?"

I stared.

The toy.

My mother.

The hidden room.

The key.

Everything connected.

The dinosaur wasn't a toy.

It was the final storage device.

Leo had been carrying the master key the entire time.

Alex lunged.

I grabbed Leo.

Adrian fired.

Alex fell backward into the flames.

Hale screamed through the speakers.

"No!"

The server room collapsed.

We ran.

Seconds later, Lumina exploded behind us.

Fire rose into the night sky.

The city watched.

For the first time, nobody could hide what Echo had done.

Police arrived.

Federal agents.

News helicopters.

The empire built on secrets began collapsing in real time.

Weeks later, St. Vincent's was demolished.

Project Echo became the biggest scandal in the city's history.

Officials resigned.

Banks froze accounts.

Judges disappeared into federal custody.

Gabriel Hale was arrested at the airport.

Alex Voss was never found in the wreckage.

Daniel survived.

Barely.

He eventually confessed everything.

And Adrian?

He spent three weeks in the hospital.

When he finally came home, Leo refused to leave his side.

I stayed too.

Not because I had a debt.

Not because I owed him.

Because somewhere between a shattered wineglass and a bulletproof estate, my life had changed.

One rainy evening, I stood in the kitchen making coffee.

Adrian walked in.

He was still recovering.

Still dangerous.

Still impossible.

But softer around the edges.

He looked at me.

"You know," he said, "you were supposed to be fired."

I smiled.

"I threw myself in front of your son."

"Exactly."

"You should be grateful."

"I am."

He stepped closer.

"Very."

I folded my arms.

"What?"

He reached into his pocket.

A small box.

My heart stopped.

"Adrian."

"Open it."

Inside was my mother's silver pendant.

Restored.

Polished.

Beautiful.

I touched it.

"I thought it was destroyed."

"It survived."

He closed his hand over mine.

"Like you."

I looked at him.

"That's dangerously romantic for a crime lord."

"I can be dangerous."

"You usually are."

He smiled.

Then Leo ran into the room.

"Papa!"

Adrian turned.

Leo jumped into his arms.

I watched them.

The boy who had once been surrounded by killers now laughed without fear.

Adrian looked over Leo's shoulder at me.

And I realized something.

I had spent most of my life believing being invisible kept me safe.

I was wrong.

Sometimes being seen changed everything.

Sometimes it saved you.

Sometimes it ruined you.

And sometimes, when the right person looked at you, it became the beginning of a life you had never dared to imagine.

I thought our story had finally ended.

I was wrong.

Because three months later, a package arrived at the Voss estate.

No return address.

Inside was a photograph.

Adrian, Leo, and me.

Taken from across the street.

On the back, written in black ink, were seven words:

YOU DESTROYED ECHO. YOU DIDN'T DESTROY ME.

Beneath the message was a symbol.

A black triangle.

A white line.

And below it...

ALEX VOSS.

I looked up from the photograph.

Adrian was standing in the doorway.

His expression had turned cold.

"How long has this been here?"

"Ten minutes."

He took the photograph.

His eyes darkened.

Leo's smile disappeared.

"Papa?"

Adrian looked at me.

Then at his son.

And for the first time since I had known him, he didn't look angry.

He looked afraid.

Not for himself.

For us.

He placed the photograph face down.

"Pack a bag."

My heart raced.

"Why?"

He reached for his gun.

"Because this time..."

He looked toward the windows.

"...he's coming for all three of us."

And somewhere outside the estate, a phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The exact number my mother had taught me to fear.

Then the lights went out.
