Chapter 13 - The Last HotelCharles had one destination.

A hotel on the coast of Maine.
The first property Emily's grandmother had ever invested in.
The place where Carson Meridian began.
Adrian tracked him there.
They arrived before dawn.
Emily refused to stay behind.
She carried no weapon.
Only the trust documents.
The hotel was silent.
Too silent.
They entered.
Charles stood in the lobby.
The three children stood behind him.
Emily stopped.
“Mia.”
The little girl ran.
Charles grabbed her arm.
Emily stepped forward.
“Let her go.”
Charles smiled.
“Drop the documents.”
Emily looked at Adrian.
He nodded.
She placed the trust on the floor.
Charles picked it up.
He opened it.
“Perfect.”
Emily looked at him.
“Do you really think this changes anything?”
“It changes everything.”
He lifted the final page.
“Your grandmother made one mistake.”
“What?”
“She trusted you.”
Emily smiled.
“She trusted my children.”
Charles froze.
Emily continued.
“You took the trust.”
“Yes.”
“You forged my signature.”
“Yes.”
“You forced Sienna.”
“Yes.”
“You manipulated Blake.”
“Yes.”
“And you still don't understand.”
Charles frowned.
“What?”
Emily looked toward the ceiling.
The hotel cameras activated.
A red light blinked.
“Everything you just admitted was recorded.”
Charles's face changed.
Adrian stepped forward.
“The police are outside.”
Charles grabbed Mia.
The little girl cried.
“Mommy!”
Emily didn't move.
She looked at her daughter.
“Mia, remember what I told you.”
Mia stopped crying.
“What?”
“Count to five.”
She nodded.
“One.”
Charles frowned.
“Two.”
Adrian moved.
“Three.”
Thomas entered from the side.
“Four.”
Police surrounded Charles.
“Five.”
Mia kicked Charles's shin.
He stumbled.
Adrian grabbed her.
The other children ran.
Emily caught them.
Charles was arrested.
The hotel fell silent.
Emily held all three children.
Her knees shook.
Adrian stood nearby.
He didn't interfere.
Later, they sat together in the hotel dining room.
The sun rose over the ocean.
Blake arrived under police protection.
He looked at Emily.
“I owe you an apology.”
Emily nodded.
“You do.”
He looked at the children.
“They're beautiful.”
“They are.”
“I wish things had been different.”
Emily looked at him.
“They could have been.”
Blake lowered his head.
“I know.”
There was no dramatic reconciliation.
No sudden forgiveness.
Some wounds did not close because someone finally said sorry.
Blake left.
Sienna stayed.
She handed Emily one last file.
“What is it?”
“A letter from your grandmother.”
Emily opened it.
This one had never been sealed.
It contained only a few lines.
“Emily,
The company was never your true inheritance.
Neither was the money.
Your true inheritance is the ability to walk away from people who make you smaller.
When you finally understand that, you will be richer than anything Carson Meridian could ever make you.”
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
She looked at her children.
For the first time, she understood.
She didn't want Blake's penthouse.
She didn't want the Hamptons house.
She didn't even want revenge.
She wanted her life back.
But Adrian wasn't looking at the letter.
He was staring at the final page.
Emily noticed.
“What?”
Adrian looked at her.
“There is one thing your grandmother never told you.”
Emily's heart sank.
“What now?”
He pointed to the bottom.
A name.
Not hers.
Not Blake's.
Not Charles's.
Margaret Sloan.
Emily's attorney.
The woman who had sat beside her on the day of the divorce.
May you like
Emily whispered:
“She knew.”
