Chapter 12 - THE LOCKER WITH NO NUMBERPier Nine was empty.

Fog rolled over the water.

Michael walked alone into Warehouse 17.

He carried no weapon.

No phone.

No police.

At least that was what Rebecca believed.

Hidden beneath his coat was a tiny microphone.

Kane monitored from a van across the street.

Michael entered the warehouse.

“Lucas!”

A child's voice answered.

“Dad!”

Michael's heart broke.

Lucas was tied to a chair.

Rebecca stood behind him.

She looked so much like Rachel that Michael's knees weakened.

“You're Rachel's sister.”

Rebecca nodded.

“She told you I died.”

“She told me nothing.”

Rebecca laughed bitterly.

“She always got the better story.”

Michael stared.

“Where is Rachel's body?”

Rebecca's expression changed.

“She didn't die here.”

“What?”

“She survived the crash.”

Michael froze.

“The hospital records were altered.”

“By Elliot?”

“Yes.”

“Then where is she?”

Rebecca lowered her eyes.

“She died later.”

“How?”

“Poison.”

Michael's body went numb.

“Who?”

Rebecca didn't answer.

Instead, she placed a document on the table.

“You sign over Sophie’s trust.”

“No.”

Rebecca pointed a gun at Lucas.

Michael's jaw clenched.

“Don't.”

“Then sign.”

The document was three pages long.

Michael read.

The transfer required two signatures.

His.

And Victoria's.

Michael looked at Rebecca.

“You never planned to let me leave.”

Rebecca smiled.

“That depends.”

“On what?”

“Whether Victoria comes.”

Michael realized the trap.

Rebecca had been using him to force Victoria into the open.

Then the warehouse lights came on.

Victoria stepped through the side door.

No handcuffs.

No police.

Her face was pale.

Rebecca turned.

“You came.”

Victoria looked at Lucas.

“Let him go.”

“You know the rules.”

Victoria pulled out a folder.

“The original trust.”

Rebecca smiled.

“You actually found it.”

Victoria nodded.

Michael watched them carefully.

“You two have been working together.”

Rebecca laughed.

“Only recently.”

Victoria stared at Michael.

“I was trying to stop Elliot.”

“You drugged me.”

“I was trying to protect the trust.”

“You hurt my children.”

Victoria looked at Lucas.

Tears filled her eyes.

“I never wanted that.”

Rebecca raised her gun.

“Enough.”

Then Michael heard a tiny clicking sound.

His microphone.

Kane was ready.

Michael deliberately knocked over a lamp.

Darkness.

Gunfire.

Screaming.

Michael tackled Rebecca.

Victoria grabbed Lucas.

Emily burst through the side door with police behind her.

Rebecca escaped through the loading dock.

Kane chased her.

Michael untied Lucas.

“Are you hurt?”

Lucas shook his head.

Then he whispered:

“Dad.”

“What?”

Lucas pointed to the floor.

A small silver chain lay there.

Attached was a photograph.

Rachel.

Holding a newborn baby boy.

On the back were four words:

HE IS STILL ALIVE.

Michael stared at the photograph.

May you like

Then read the hospital bracelet visible around the baby's wrist.

JONAH HAYES.
