CHAPTER 10 The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The message remained on Chloe’s phone for several minutes.

She did not move.

She did not blink.

She simply stared at the words.

"Ask Arthur why your grandfather really left the company."

A normal person might have deleted it.

A normal person might have assumed it was a prank.

But Chloe had spent the last few days discovering that nothing about this voyage was normal.

The ship had revealed her lies.

Then it revealed her family’s hidden history.

And now someone was telling her that the story she grew up with was incomplete.

She looked at the sender.

Unknown number.

No profile.

No information.

Just a ghost speaking through a screen.

She typed:

Who are you?

The message showed as delivered.

No response.

She waited.

One minute.

Five minutes.

Ten minutes.

Nothing.

Then another message appeared.

"Ask Arthur before Victor finds you."

Chloe froze.

Victor.

The name she had heard earlier.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

The man connected to everything.

At the same time, Arthur stood inside the ship’s security room.

The atmosphere was tense.

The screen showed security footage.

Victor Lang walking through a restricted corridor.

The image was clear.

No mistake.

No confusion.

It was him.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakable.

Thomas sat silently.

His hands were shaking.

Arthur noticed.

“Thomas.”

The old engineer looked up.

“I spent twenty-five years believing that man was gone.”

Arthur looked at the screen.

“So did I.”

Captain Ward entered.

“Security teams have searched the area.”

“And?”

“Nothing.”

Arthur frowned.

“Nothing?”

“No trace.”

Thomas gave a bitter laugh.

“That sounds like Victor.”

Everyone looked at him.

Thomas continued.

“He never wanted people to find him.”

Captain Ward crossed his arms.

“How does someone disappear for twelve years?”

Thomas looked at Arthur.

“He had practice.”

Thirty years earlier, Victor Lang had not started as a villain.

That was what made the story complicated.

He was intelligent.

Charming.

Helpful.

The kind of person who entered a room and made everyone believe he belonged there.

When Arthur and Thomas were struggling to find funding, Victor appeared like a miracle.

He introduced them to investors.

He arranged meetings.

He helped the company grow.

For a while, everyone believed they had found the perfect partner.

But power changes people.

Or perhaps it reveals them.

Victor began asking different questions.

Not:

"How do we make this safer?"

But:

"How do we make this bigger?"

Not:

"How do passengers trust us?"

But:

"How much will they pay?"

The arguments became constant.

Then came the contract.

The agreement that protected the company.

The agreement that prevented any one person from controlling the future.

Victor hated it.

Because he wanted control.

And when he realized he could not get it legally…

He looked for another way.

“Your grandfather knew,” Arthur said quietly.

Thomas looked at him.

“About Victor?”

Arthur nodded.

“Robert discovered that Victor was moving company assets without approval.”

Chloe’s grandfather.

The man she thought was only a wealthy connection.

He had actually been protecting the company.

Thomas continued.

“He confronted Victor.”

“What happened?”

Arthur looked down.

“Victor threatened him.”

Captain Ward frowned.

“Threatened him how?”

Arthur was silent.

Then:

“He said if Robert continued, he would destroy his reputation.”

Thomas added:

“And he almost did.”

The story was darker than Chloe expected.

Her grandfather had not left because he failed.

He had left because he was blamed.

Victor had created a false story.

A story where Robert Bennett was the problem.

A story where Arthur and Thomas looked like the difficult ones.

A story that damaged Robert’s reputation.

And instead of fighting publicly, Robert walked away.

Why?

Because he wanted to protect his family.

Even if it meant people misunderstood him.

Chloe entered the security room quietly.

Everyone turned.

Arthur immediately noticed her expression.

“What happened?”

She held up her phone.

“I received this.”

Arthur read the message.

His face changed.

“Who sent it?”

“I don’t know.”

Thomas looked concerned.

“Victor?”

Nobody answered.

Because they all knew.

It was possible.

Arthur looked at Chloe.

“You should not have come here alone.”

She looked surprised.

“I’m not a child.”

Arthur nodded.

“I know.”

A pause.

“But dangerous people don’t care about age.”

The sentence reminded her of Milo.

And suddenly she understood something.

Arthur was not just protecting her now.

He was protecting everyone.

Even someone who had hurt him.

Captain Ward received another alert.

This time, from the bridge.

“Captain?”

Everyone looked.

A crew member’s voice came through the speaker.

“We found something.”

“What?”

“A hidden access point.”

The captain frowned.

“Where?”

A pause.

“Near the original engineering section.”

Thomas stood immediately.

“No.”

Arthur looked at him.

“What?”

Thomas looked terrified.

“That area was sealed twenty years ago.”

“Why?”

Thomas answered:

“Because that was where we stored the original company records.”

The room went silent.

The original records.

The missing history.

The secrets.

Everything Victor wanted to control.

Arthur looked at Captain Ward.

“Take us there.”

The old engineering section was nothing like the rest of the ship.

The luxury disappeared.

The polished marble.

The golden decorations.

The elegant lights.

Gone.

This part of the vessel was dark.

Industrial.

A reminder of what the ship had been before it became a floating palace.

A machine.

A dream.

A promise.

Security officers opened the door.

Inside was an old storage room.

Dust covered the shelves.

Old blueprints.

Old equipment.

Old memories.

Thomas walked slowly.

“I can’t believe this place still exists.”

Arthur looked around.

“Someone came here recently.”

The captain looked at the floor.

Footprints.

Fresh.

Everyone stopped.

Someone had been here.

Recently.

Arthur followed the trail.

At the end of the room was a small metal box.

Locked.

Thomas recognized it immediately.

“No.”

“What?”

“That box…”

He swallowed.

“That belonged to Victor.”

Arthur opened it carefully.

Inside was a collection of documents.

Photographs.

Letters.

And one final item.

A recording device.

Old technology.

But still working.

Thomas pressed the button.

A voice filled the room.

A voice they all recognized.

Victor Lang.

“If you are hearing this…”

The recording paused.

Then continued.

“It means I failed to keep the truth buried.”

Everyone froze.

The voice became colder.

“But before you judge me, Arthur…”

A pause.

“Remember this.”

“You built the ship.”

“But I built the empire.”

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then another sound came.

A door closing.

Everyone turned.

A shadow moved at the end of the corridor.

Security officers ran.

Arthur followed.

But by the time they reached the hallway…

Nobody was there.

Only one thing remained.

A small card placed on the floor.

Arthur picked it up.

Three words were written on it.

"The voyage continues."

And beneath those words…

A signature.

Victor Lang.

The man who was supposed to be dead had returned.

And he was not finished.
