Chapter 7 - THE GRAVE THAT WAS NEVER SEALEDRain hammered the Ashford cemetery.

Gabriel stood beside Michael's grave.

Harper held Noah under an umbrella.

Emma sat in a car nearby, wounded but conscious.

Victoria watched the trees.

"This is insane," Harper whispered.

Gabriel knelt.

He touched the gravestone.

MICHAEL ASHFORD.

1987-2018.

"He isn't there," Gabriel said.

Harper frowned.

"What?"

"I told you there was never a body."

"Then why bury an empty grave?"

"To make people stop looking."

Gabriel began digging.

After several minutes, his shovel struck metal.

A steel box.

He pulled it out.

There was a fingerprint scanner on top.

Gabriel pressed his thumb.

The box opened.

Inside was a photograph.

Three flash drives.

And a letter.

Gabriel read the letter.

His expression changed.

Harper stepped closer.

"What?"

He handed it to her.

Michael had written:

If you're reading this, then I'm dead or hiding.

Do not trust the police.

Do not trust Victoria.

And never let Harper remember.

Harper stared at the page.

"Why?"

Gabriel took the letter.

The final sentence continued.

Because Harper is the only person who knows where the original evidence is hidden.

Harper's head began throbbing.

A memory flashed.

A red door.

Her mother's hands.

A small metal box.

She dropped the letter.

"I remember."

Gabriel grabbed her shoulders.

"Where?"

"My house."

"What?"

"Our old house."

"Harper..."

"Under the floor."

Another memory.

Her mother kneeling.

A child watching.

Her mother whispering:

"Never tell anyone."

Harper looked at Gabriel.

"She hid something there."

Then headlights appeared through the rain.

Three black SUVs.

Gabriel immediately reached for his gun.

Victoria stepped into the road.

The first SUV stopped.

The door opened.

Derek Lawson stepped out.

Harper froze.

He was wearing a police uniform.

His face was calm.

"Miss me?"

Gabriel raised his gun.

Derek smiled.

"Put it down."

"You first."

Derek laughed.

"You still think you're in control."

He pointed behind Gabriel.

Harper turned.

Two men had surrounded Noah.

She screamed.

"Noah!"

Derek spoke softly.

"You have something I need."

Harper stared at him.

"The evidence."

Derek nodded.

"Exactly."

"You killed people for it."

"I did more than kill people."

He looked at Gabriel.

"I built my career on it."

Gabriel's face hardened.

Derek continued.

"I made judges disappear."

"I made witnesses disappear."

"I made entire investigations disappear."

He looked at Harper.

"And your mother?"

Harper couldn't speak.

Derek smiled.

"She begged."

Gabriel fired.

Derek ducked.

Chaos erupted.

Harper grabbed Noah.

They ran.

Lightning flashed.

Gunshots echoed.

Then Harper heard Derek shout:

"Your father didn't kill your mother!"

She stopped.

"What?"

Derek looked at her through the rain.

"She killed herself."

Harper froze.

"Because she discovered who you really were."

Derek smiled.

"You aren't Harper Queen."

Then he said the sentence that shattered everything.

"You are Emma's twin."

Gabriel grabbed Harper.

"Run."

But Derek shouted after them:

"Ask Gabriel what happened the night you were born!"

Harper looked back.

May you like

Gabriel wouldn't meet her eyes.

And that frightened her more than Derek ever had.
