Chapter 10 - The PromiseThe explosion sent me flying.

When I opened my eyes, I couldn't hear anything.

Smoke filled the air.

Ethan was gone.

Ava was screaming.

Daniel was nowhere.

I crawled through the wreckage.

“Ethan!”

No answer.

“Ethan!”

Then I saw him.

He was trapped beneath a piece of metal.

I pulled with everything I had.

Ava helped.

Together, we freed him.

But Eleanor was gone.

So was Charles.

Daniel appeared through the smoke.

His face was bleeding.

“Are you okay?”

I ran to him.

“You're alive.”

He looked at me.

“I promised your mother.”

“What promise?”

“That I would protect you.”

Police arrived moments later.

Charles was caught trying to escape through the tunnel.

Eleanor disappeared.

For three weeks, everything became chaos.

Federal investigators.

Court hearings.

Financial investigations.

DNA tests.

Hidden trusts.

Old records.

And finally, the truth.

My mother had spent seventeen years protecting me.

Daniel's father had tried to protect her.

Charles had manipulated everything.

The marriage contract was real.

But Daniel withdrew it.

He didn't need it anymore.

The board had collapsed after the evidence surfaced.

The trust was placed under my control.

But I didn't care about the money.

Not anymore.

I cared about the children.

And Daniel.

Six months later, we stood on the same highway where we'd met.

The desert looked different.

Maybe because I wasn't afraid anymore.

Ava held my hand.

Ethan carried a backpack over one shoulder.

Daniel stood beside us.

“You know,” he said, “we could have chosen a normal way to meet.”

I laughed.

“Apparently normal isn't your family's specialty.”

He smiled.

Then he took my hand.

“Sarah.”

“What?”

“I need to ask you something.”

My heart skipped.

He reached into his pocket.

Another ring.

Not a contract.

Not a business arrangement.

Not an emergency.

Just a ring.

“I know our first marriage wasn't exactly romantic.”

“It definitely wasn't.”

“I know you never owed me anything.”

“I know.”

He looked at me.

“But somewhere between the desert and the ruins and all the people trying to kill us…”

I laughed.

“That is an extremely strange love story.”

“I know.”

He smiled.

“So I'm asking again.”

He knelt.

Ava gasped.

Ethan shouted:

“Mom! Say yes!”

I looked at Daniel.

The billionaire.

The stranger who had stopped on a forgotten road.

The man who had offered me a marriage when I had forty-seven cents.

And somehow, after all the lies, blood, secrets, and fear...

he had become the one person I trusted completely.

“Yes.”

Daniel slipped the ring onto my finger.

The children cheered.

For the first time, the desert didn't feel empty.

It felt like the beginning.

But as we turned toward the waiting car, my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Then I saw the message.

A photograph.

My mother.

Daniel.

And two infants.

Taken twenty years ago.
