Chapter 14 - The Father in the DarkThe lights came on.

Every window was covered with steel shutters.

Doors locked automatically.

Cora heard footsteps above.

Dozens of them.

Lucien's voice came through the speakers.

"You spent years trying to become better than me."

Dante stared at the ceiling.

"I failed you."

Lucien laughed.

"You became exactly what I needed."

Cora looked at Dante.

He was shaking.

Not from fear.

From rage.

"What does he mean?"

Dante didn't answer.

Victor did.

"Lucien needed an heir who didn't know he was being trained."

"For what?"

"To destroy his enemies."

Cora understood.

"That's why Dante was raised."

Victor nodded.

"Every alliance. Every business. Every betrayal."

"Dante wasn't building an empire."

"He was clearing the board."

A steel door opened.

Lucien walked inside.

Older than the photographs.

White hair.

Dark coat.

Calm eyes.

He looked at Dante.

"My son."

Dante raised his gun.

"You should have stayed dead."

Lucien smiled.

"You still haven't learned."

"What?"

"Family is not something you escape."

Cora stepped closer to Dante.

Lucien looked at her.

"And there she is."

"You killed my father."

"No."

He shook his head.

"Your father killed himself."

Cora's eyes hardened.

"How?"

"By refusing to understand that information is worth more than blood."

"You ordered his death."

"I ordered a lesson."

"That lesson killed him."

Lucien shrugged.

"He knew the risks."

Dante's voice dropped.

"You killed my father."

Lucien smiled.

"He was weak."

Dante stepped forward.

Lucien continued.

"That's why I replaced him."

"With who?"

"With you."

Dante's gun trembled.

Cora touched his arm.

"Don't."

Lucien looked amused.

"She can control you now."

Dante turned.

"Don't talk about her."

"Why?"

"Because she's the only thing in this room I chose."

Lucien's expression changed.

"You chose nothing."

Dante raised the gun.

Lucien's men immediately raised theirs.

Cora saw Elena standing behind them.

Weak.

But alive.

Elena looked at Cora.

Then at the ceiling.

Cora understood.

A distraction.

She dropped the brass key onto the floor.

It hit metal.

Everyone looked down.

Elena moved.

She fired at the lights.

Darkness.

Dante grabbed Cora.

Victor attacked Lucien's guards.

Gunfire erupted.

Cora ran.

Through a corridor.

Past a laboratory.

Into an old records room.

She found the original hospital ledger.

Two names.

Two births.

Two babies.

But the pages had been altered.

Cora touched the ink.

"Someone changed this."

Dante appeared behind her.

"Who?"

She pointed.

"Lucien."

Dante looked.

Then saw another note beneath the altered entry.

Written in a different hand.

Marcus Davis.

I know what they did.

Cora's eyes filled with tears.

Her father knew.

He knew she wasn't safe.

And yet he had stayed.

Because he had been protecting her.

Dante took the page.

"We need to go."

Cora stopped him.

"No."

"What?"

"We can't run forever."

She tore the original page from the ledger.

Dante stared.

"What are you doing?"

"Ending it."

She walked back into the main hall.

Lucien turned.

"Cora."

She held up the page.

"I know everything."

Lucien smiled.

"You know nothing."

"I know you switched us."

His face changed.

Dante stepped beside her.

"I know you used me."

Lucien stared at his son.

"And I know you killed Marcus Davis."

"I did."

Cora's voice broke.

"Why?"

Lucien's answer was cold.

"Because he chose you over survival."

Dante raised the gun.

Lucien smiled.

"Do it."

Dante hesitated.

Lucien whispered:

"Become me."

Cora stepped between them.

"Don't."

Dante looked at her.

Her eyes were wet.

But steady.

"Don't let him decide who you become."

Lucien laughed.

Then the building shook.

Sirens erupted outside.

Victor had called federal agents.

Lucien looked stunned.

Dante lowered his weapon.

"You were right."

Lucien stared.

"About what?"

"I became exactly what you made me."

A pause.

"Until her."

Lucien's face hardened.

He reached for a hidden gun.

Cora saw it.

"Dante!"

A shot exploded.

Lucien fell.

Silence.

Dante stood frozen.

Cora looked at the blood spreading across the floor.

Then she looked at Dante.

He hadn't fired.

Victor had.

Lucien was dead.

But the nightmare wasn't over.

Victor approached them.

"There's one problem."

Dante turned.

"What?"

Victor looked at Cora.

"The original ledger."

He held up another page.

"There's a final name."

Cora's heart stopped.

"Whose?"

Victor looked at Dante.

"Yours."

Then he handed Dante the page.

May you like

At the bottom was a final sentence.

The Moretti empire legally belongs to Cora Davis.
