Chapter 15 - The Face in the Drawing“What's the timer?”

Adrian didn't answer.

Luca stared at him.

“What's happening?”

Adrian finally said:

“The vial is unstable.”

Mara took it.

“If it isn't administered in five minutes, the compound becomes toxic.”

“To whom?”

Mara looked at Adrian.

“Anyone.”

Adrian smiled.

“That's why Father never used it.”

Luca frowned.

“Then why keep it?”

“Because the cure was never designed to cure a single person.”

Adrian pointed to the files.

“It was designed to repair the genetic mutation permanently.”

Luca looked at Emma.

“Her.”

Adrian nodded.

“But if it works…”

Mara finished the sentence.

“Everyone carrying the mutation could be treated.”

Luca understood.

His family had spent decades fighting over a cure that could have saved all of them.

His father had hidden it.

The Valtieri had hunted it.

Adrian had nearly died for it.

And Emma had unknowingly become the key.

Luca looked at the timer.

03:12

“Do it.”

Mara hesitated.

“It could kill her.”

Luca's heart stopped.

“Then don't.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“But if we don't, the mutation will always follow her.”

Luca looked at Emma.

She was holding his hand.

“Daddy?”

He crouched.

“Yes?”

“Are you going to leave again?”

The question destroyed him.

Luca shook his head.

“No.”

“Promise?”

He looked into her eyes.

“Promise.”

Emma smiled.

Then she hugged him.

“I knew your face.”

Luca blinked.

“What?”

She pointed to her backpack.

She pulled out the old drawing.

The father with no face.

She turned it around.

On the back was another drawing.

A little girl.

A woman.

And a tall man.

This time, the man had eyes.

A mouth.

A face.

Emma had drawn Luca.

“How did you know?”

Emma shrugged.

“Mommy said Daddy looked at me from far away.”

Luca's eyes filled.

Rachel appeared in the doorway.

Alive.

Luca stared.

“What happened?”

She smiled through tears.

“I had a bulletproof vest.”

Marco laughed.

“That would have been useful information earlier.”

Rachel ignored him.

She walked to Emma.

Then stopped.

Luca looked at her.

“You knew I would come.”

“I hoped.”

He reached for her.

For the first time in three years, she didn't step away.

She took his hand.

Outside, sirens continued.

Police flooded the estate.

The Valtieri were arrested.

The files were seized.

The Bellini empire collapsed within weeks.

His father's crimes became public.

The hidden laboratories were exposed.

And the medical research was turned over to independent scientists.

Adrian survived.

Barely.

But he survived.

Months later, Luca sat in a cardiology clinic.

Mara reviewed the latest scans.

She smiled.

“Your heart is stable.”

“Stable?”

“For the first time in your life.”

Luca leaned back.

“So I get decades?”

Mara smiled.

“Possibly.”

“Possibly?”

She raised an eyebrow.

“You still have to listen to your doctor.”

Luca sighed.

“Cruel.”

She laughed.

Outside the clinic, Emma waited with Rachel.

Emma had grown.

She still carried the stuffed rabbit.

But now she had a new habit.

She drew pictures.

Every night.

One afternoon, Luca found a new drawing on the refrigerator.

Three people.

Rachel.

Emma.

Luca.

This time, he had a face.

Emma had drawn his eyes carefully.

His smile.

Even the small scar above his eyebrow.

Underneath, in crooked letters, she had written:

MY FAMILY.

Luca stood there for a long time.

Rachel came up behind him.

“She finally gave you a face.”

Luca smiled.

“I earned it.”

Rachel leaned against his shoulder.

“You almost died trying to save her.”

“I'd do it again.”

“I know.”

Emma ran into the room.

“Daddy!”

Luca turned.

She jumped into his arms.

For years, he had believed his greatest enemy was death.

He had been wrong.

It was fear.

Fear had convinced him that loving Emma from a distance was the same as protecting her.

Now he understood.

Protection wasn't hiding.

It was staying.

Showing up.

Holding her hand when the world became frightening.

And refusing to disappear.

That evening, Luca tucked Emma into bed.

She looked at him sleepily.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Are you still sick?”

Luca smiled.

“A little.”

“Will your heart stop?”

He paused.

Then answered honestly.

“Maybe someday.”

Emma frowned.

“But not tonight.”

“No.”

“Because I need you tomorrow.”

Luca kissed her forehead.

“I'll be there.”

Emma closed her eyes.

“Promise?”

He smiled.

“Promise.”

Luca stepped into the hallway.

Rachel was waiting.

He looked back through the open door.

Emma was already asleep.

For the first time in years, Luca felt no urge to check the exits.

No urge to reach for a gun.

No urge to disappear.

His heart beat steadily inside his chest.

Not because it was invincible.

Because it was finally being used for what he had spent his entire life avoiding.

Love.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

One photograph.

An old laboratory.

A child standing beside Luca's father.

The child was not Adrian.

Not Luca.

Not Emma.

Beneath the photograph were seven words:

YOU FOUND THE CURE. WE FOUND THE NEXT CHILD.

Luca's smile vanished.

He looked at Rachel.

She saw his face.

“What happened?”

Luca slowly turned the phone toward her.

Rachel's blood ran cold.

Because in the photograph, the child was wearing a silver locket.

The same locket Isabella had given Emma.

And on the back of the photograph was a single name.

BELLINI.

Luca stared at the image.

His heart began beating faster.

The war was over.

Or so he had believed.

Because someone had just reminded him of the oldest rule in his family.

May you like

A Bellini secret was never buried.

It was only waiting for the next generation to uncover it.
