Chapter 8 - The House by the SeaTwenty Years Ago, Someone Burned the Truth

The house stood on a cliff outside Palermo.

Wind tore across the sea.

The windows were dark.

The front gate hung open.

Sophia walked beside Matteo.

Neither spoke.

The moment she crossed the threshold, memory hit her.

A blue curtain.

A wooden staircase.

Her mother's perfume.

She stopped.

"I've been here."

Matteo looked at her.

"You were."

"I was a child."

He nodded.

Sophia touched the wall.

"I remember this."

"What?"

"Someone screaming."

Matteo's face tightened.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

They entered the main room.

Dust covered the furniture.

A fireplace stood against the far wall.

On the mantel were three photographs.

Sophia walked toward them.

The first was Elena.

The second was Matteo.

The third was Luca as a baby.

Beside the photograph lay a small black key.

Sophia picked it up.

"Luca said he had one."

Matteo reached for it.

"No."

She pulled away.

"Why?"

"Because this key opens a room."

"What room?"

"My father's private vault."

Sophia froze.

"Then why was it here?"

Matteo looked around.

"Because Elena stole something."

"What?"

"Records."

"About what?"

"My father."

He led her to the wall behind the fireplace.

Pressed a hidden mechanism.

A section of stone moved.

An iron door appeared.

Sophia stared.

The key fit.

Inside was a small room.

Boxes.

Files.

Cash.

Photographs.

And a tape recorder.

Sophia turned to Matteo.

He pressed play.

Static.

Then Elena's voice.

Older.

Tired.

Terrified.

"If Sophia is hearing this, it means Matteo found her."

Sophia's eyes filled.

"Mom."

Elena's voice continued.

"You need to understand that Matteo did not betray me because he hated me."

Sophia glanced at Matteo.

"He betrayed me because he believed I had betrayed him."

Matteo closed his eyes.

"Twenty years ago, your father ordered my death," Elena said. "But he did not do it alone."

The tape crackled.

"There was another man."

Sophia looked at Salvatore.

He stood in the doorway.

Elena continued.

"The man closest to Matteo."

Matteo's eyes snapped open.

"Enrico," he whispered.

Sophia shook her head.

"He died."

"That doesn't mean anything."

The recording continued.

"I discovered the truth after Luca was born."

Sophia's breath caught.

"Enrico was selling Bellandi information to another family. He knew where Matteo kept his money. He knew the names of every man loyal to him."

Static.

Then Elena whispered:

"And he knew about you, Sophia."

Sophia's heart stopped.

The tape clicked.

A new recording began.

This voice was male.

Her father's?

She didn't know.

"Elena, you have one hour."

Elena answered:

"Stay away from my children."

The man laughed.

"Then give me Matteo."

"Never."

"Choose."

There was a crash.

Then a scream.

The tape ended.

Sophia looked at Matteo.

"What happened?"

"I don't remember."

"You were there."

"I remember fighting."

"With who?"

Matteo looked at the floor.

"Everyone."

Sophia opened another box.

Inside lay a birth certificate.

She unfolded it.

Her hands trembled.

The name at the top:

SOPHIA BELLANDI.

Not Romano.

Bellandi.

She stared.

"No."

Matteo reached for it.

She snatched it away.

"This says I'm your daughter."

The silence was absolute.

Then Matteo whispered:

"Elena wasn't pregnant when she disappeared."

Sophia looked up.

"Then who was?"

Matteo's face went white.

"Nobody."

A sound came from behind them.

A woman's voice.

Weak.

Shaking.

Alive.

"You were."

Sophia turned.

A woman stood in the doorway.

Older.

Thinner.

Her hair streaked with gray.

But the eyes were unmistakable.

Sophia dropped the birth certificate.

"Mom?"

Elena Romano looked at her daughter.

May you like

And said:

"Run."
