Chapter 15 - Nobody moved.Liam looked at the child as though the world had stopped.

“Daddy?”

Lily repeated it.

Her tiny voice shook.

Liam's face changed.

For the first time since Clara had met him, the feared president looked completely lost.

Clara stepped backward.

“No.”

Tommy closed his eyes.

Liam looked at him.

“You knew.”

Tommy nodded.

“How?”

“Because your father told me.”

Liam's jaw tightened.

“When?”

“Six years ago.”

Clara looked between them.

“You're telling me Lily is Liam's daughter?”

Tommy nodded.

“Her mother died giving birth.”

Liam stared at Lily.

“Why didn't anyone tell me?”

“Because your father ordered her hidden.”

Clara turned toward Liam's father.

“You stole his daughter.”

“I protected her.”

“You kidnapped her.”

“She would've been killed.”

“By whom?”

His father pointed at the notebook.

“Everybody named inside that book.”

Liam took a step toward him.

“You could've told me.”

“I did.”

“When?”

His father looked at Clara.

“The day your mother died.”

Clara understood.

Everything connected.

Her mother had discovered the truth.

She had tried to protect Lily.

Liam's father had hidden his granddaughter.

Marcus had killed Miriam.

Tommy had stolen the Red Ledger.

Ray had become part of the network.

And Liam had unknowingly walked into the diner and saved the very child his father had spent years hiding.

Clara looked at Lily.

The little girl smiled.

“Can we go home?”

That simple question broke through all the secrets.

Clara knelt.

“Yeah.”

Liam crouched beside her.

“Where is home?”

Lily looked at him.

“With Clara.”

Liam looked at Clara.

Something passed between them.

Not romance.

Not yet.

Something stronger.

A promise.

He stood.

“Then we take her home.”

His father raised his weapon.

Liam turned.

“Don't.”

The older man hesitated.

Clara stepped between them.

“You've taken enough.”

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then his father slowly lowered the weapon.

Marcus stepped forward.

“You've forgotten one thing.”

Clara frowned.

“What?”

Marcus pointed at the ledger.

“The account.”

Tommy opened it.

The final page had changed.

A new line of text appeared.

AUTHORIZED.

Then a bank number.

And a balance.

Clara stared.

It wasn't billions.

It was much larger.

Hundreds of millions more.

Liam looked at the figure.

“This wasn't a criminal account.”

“Then what was it?” Clara asked.

Tommy read the final entry.

“Emergency protection fund.”

“For whom?”

Tommy looked at Lily.

“For every child they've ever hidden.”

Clara felt tears rise.

All those years.

All those lies.

All those people who had been forgotten.

Her mother had not built the system to become rich.

She had built it to protect children.

Her father had corrupted it.

Marcus had stolen from it.

Liam's father had controlled it.

And Lily had become the key that could expose everything.

Suddenly, sirens echoed outside.

Bobby rushed in.

“President!”

Liam turned.

“Police?”

Bobby shook his head.

“Federal agents.”

Clara looked at him.

“Who called them?”

Liam looked at the ledger.

“I did.”

“You did what?”

“I sent the evidence.”

Tommy smiled weakly.

“Then it's over.”

Liam shook his head.

“No.”

He looked toward the door.

“It’s beginning.”

Federal agents flooded the mansion.

Marcus surrendered.

Ray was arrested.

Liam's father disappeared before they could reach him.

Tommy was taken for questioning.

Clara stood outside with Lily.

The sun was beginning to rise.

For the first time in years, Clara didn't have to wonder whether someone was following her.

She didn't have to calculate rent in her head.

She didn't have to think about debts.

Lily tugged her sleeve.

“Clara?”

“Yes?”

“Is Liam coming?”

Clara looked across the parking lot.

Liam was standing beside his motorcycle.

He was wearing a new leather cut.

The old one, ruined by coffee, was gone.

He looked at Clara.

Then Lily.

He walked toward them.

Lily ran.

“Daddy!”

Liam caught her.

He held her awkwardly at first.

Then tightly.

Clara watched.

After a moment, Liam looked at her.

“You still owe me.”

Clara smiled.

“For the coffee?”

“For the cut.”

“The debt is paid.”

“Not yet.”

She folded her arms.

“How much?”

Liam smiled.

“One dinner.”

Clara laughed.

“That's it?”

“One dinner.”

“And then we're even?”

Liam's expression became serious.

“No.”

Clara raised an eyebrow.

“What else?”

Liam looked at Lily.

Then back at Clara.

“You saved my daughter.”

Clara's smile faded.

“You saved us first.”

He stepped closer.

“That wasn't the deal.”

“What deal?”

“You burned a president.”

“And you ruined your cut.”

He smiled.

“I think we're still arguing about that.”

Clara laughed.

For the first time, the sound came easily.

Then a black SUV suddenly screeched around the corner.

Liam's smile vanished.

He pushed Clara behind him.

The SUV stopped.

The rear window rolled down.

A woman inside looked directly at Clara.

Then she held up a photograph.

Clara stared.

It was her mother.

But this time, Miriam wasn't alone.

Standing beside her was a little boy.

A boy Clara had never seen.

On the back of the photograph were four words.

YOUR FAMILY ISN'T FINISHED.

Liam's hand tightened around his weapon.

Clara looked at Lily.

Then at the photograph.

May you like

And realized the nightmare wasn't over.

It had only changed its face.
