Chapter 2 - The Empire He Thought Was HisBy sunrise, Daniel's phone had been ringing for twenty-six minutes.

He ignored every call.

He was sitting beside the woman from the SUV.

She had finally removed her coat.

I recognized her.

Claire Whitmore.

Daniel's first love.

The woman he had told me disappeared from his life six years ago.

The woman he claimed he hadn't spoken to in years.

The woman whose name I had found only once in an old email.

Claire stared out the window.

"Does she know?"

Daniel loosened his grip on the steering wheel.

"No."

"You said she wouldn't find out until everything was transferred."

"It will be."

Claire turned toward him.

"You'd better be right."

Daniel looked at her.

"I've spent four years preparing for this."

I closed my eyes.

Four years.

Four years married to him.

Four years while he had been planning something behind my back.

But there was something he didn't know.

The Mercer Family Trust had been preparing too.

At 5:05 a.m., Marcus Hale walked into my kitchen carrying three leather folders.

Marcus had represented my father for twenty-seven years.

He looked at me.

"Did he leave?"

"Yes."

"With Claire?"

"Yes."

He nodded grimly.

"Then the clause is valid."

I stared at him.

"Tell me everything."

Marcus placed the first folder on the table.

"Your father knew Daniel wanted control of Brooks Development."

"I thought Brooks Development belonged to Daniel."

"It doesn't."

I looked up.

"What?"

Marcus opened the folder.

Inside were corporate documents, share certificates, loan agreements and property records.

"This is Brooks Development."

He pointed to the ownership structure.

"Daniel Brooks owns fourteen percent."

My mouth went dry.

"Fourteen?"

"Fourteen."

"Then who owns the rest?"

Marcus looked directly at me.

"You."

I laughed bitterly.

"That's impossible."

"It's not."

He opened another document.

Mercer Holdings.

Mercer Coastal Properties.

Mercer Residential Partners.

Brooks Development.

Several hotel projects.

Commercial properties.

Construction financing.

Luxury apartment complexes across South Carolina and Georgia.

I stared at the pages.

All of them had one thing in common.

The controlling interests were held by companies I had never heard of.

Companies controlled by my trust.

"Why didn't I know?"

"Because your father never wanted Daniel to know."

"Then why let Daniel run everything?"

"Because he needed Daniel to believe he had finally won."

I stared at him.

"Won what?"

Marcus closed the folder.

"Your father's approval."

I felt sick.

My father had never liked Daniel.

He had been polite.

Nothing more.

When I told him Daniel proposed, he simply said:

"Love makes people careless. Money makes them desperate."

I had thought he was being cynical.

Now I wasn't so sure.

"What happens now?"

Marcus slid another document toward me.

"Daniel's authority was conditional."

"Conditional on what?"

"You remaining married."

I frowned.

"That makes no sense."

"It made perfect sense to your father."

Marcus pointed at the signature page.

"Daniel was appointed operational president of several Mercer-controlled entities. His powers were designed to expire if he abandoned you, committed financial fraud, or attempted to move protected assets without approval."

I looked at the clock.

5:17 a.m.

"How do we activate it?"

Marcus smiled faintly.

"It already activated itself."

My phone vibrated.

A message from the chief financial officer of Brooks Development.

URGENT. Banking authority suspended.

Another message.

All outgoing transfers blocked.

Then another.

Board members requesting emergency meeting.

I stared at the screen.

Daniel had no idea.

Marcus leaned forward.

"There's more."

"What?"

"Claire wasn't calling him because she missed him."

I looked at him.

"Then why?"

Marcus opened the final folder.

Inside was a photograph.

Claire.

Daniel.

And another man.

I recognized the man immediately.

Elliot Whitmore.

Claire's older brother.

My father had warned me about him too.

Beneath the photograph was a bank statement.

Millions of dollars.

Transfers from a company called Whitmore Strategic Holdings.

Into an account controlled by Daniel.

I stared at the dates.

The transfers began three years ago.

Three years ago.

The same year Daniel had started telling me he wanted to expand Brooks Development.

My pulse accelerated.

"They've been taking money."

Marcus nodded.

"Over twenty-three million dollars."

I looked up.

"Where did it go?"

"That's what we haven't found."

My phone rang.

The caller ID showed Daniel.

I stared at it.

Marcus didn't say anything.

I answered.

"Hello?"

His voice was breathless.

"Hannah, where are you?"

I almost laughed.

"Home."

"I'm coming back."

"No."

Silence.

"Hannah."

"You left."

"I had an emergency."

"With Claire?"

Another silence.

"Hannah, listen to me."

"No."

"I swear there is an explanation."

"I'm sure there is."

"I love you."

I looked at the wedding ring on the table.

"Then why did you leave?"

"I had to."

"At 2:13 in the morning?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

He didn't answer.

I heard Claire's voice in the background.

"Daniel, we have to go."

He covered the phone.

Then returned.

"I'll explain everything."

"When?"

"Today."

"Fine."

"Where?"

I smiled.

"Mercer Tower."

He went silent.

"Why there?"

"Because we need to discuss something."

"What?"

I looked at Marcus.

Then at the stack of files.

"The company."

Daniel breathed out.

"That isn't necessary."

"It is now."

He went quiet.

Then he asked one question.

"Hannah, what did your father tell you about me?"

I froze.

"You know my father's name."

"I asked what he told you."

"Why?"

"Because if he told you the truth..."

His voice broke.

"...then I'm already too late."

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Marcus slowly closed his briefcase.

"What did he mean?"

"I don't know."

Marcus looked toward the window.

"The question is not what Daniel knows."

He paused.

"It's what Claire told him."

At exactly 6:02 a.m., the elevators in Mercer Tower unlocked.

At exactly 6:03, every board member received an emergency notice.

And at 6:04, Daniel Brooks walked into the building he thought belonged to him.

He didn't know that every person waiting in the boardroom had already received one instruction.

May you like

Do not call him CEO.

Because after that morning, Daniel Brooks would never hold the title again.
