Chapter 6 - My Stepmother's SecretThe police had already arrived by the time I reached Blackwood House.

Melissa sat on the front steps with a blanket around her shoulders.
The gun lay on the grass nearby.
She looked terrified.
For once, I believed it.
âYou came,â she whispered.
I stopped several feet away.
âYou broke into my house.â
Her eyes widened.
âOur house.â
âNo.â
I stared at her.
âIt's mine.â
She flinched.
Richard stepped between us.
âDetective, what happened?â
The officer explained.
Melissa had entered through a service door.
She claimed she came to speak with me.
Then she went upstairs.
Then she heard someone inside the bedroom.
She found the gun in a drawer.
âAnd whose gun was it?â I asked.
The detective shook his head.
âUnregistered.â
I looked at Melissa.
âYou expect me to believe you?â
She stared at me.
âYou have every reason not to.â
âWhy were you in my mother's room?â
She lowered her head.
âI wanted something.â
âWhat?â
âA photograph.â
âOf what?â
She looked toward the house.
âYour mother.â
My stomach tightened.
âWhy?â
Melissa hesitated.
Then said,
âBecause she knew what your father had done.â
Silence.
Richard looked at her sharply.
âWhat exactly are you accusing Daniel of?â
Melissa's voice cracked.
âHe didn't kill her.â
I froze.
âYou're sure?â
âYes.â
âThen who did?â
She stared at me.
âI don't know.â
I stepped closer.
âBut you know something.â
She nodded.
âYour grandfather hired someone to investigate the crash.â
âI know.â
âNo.â
She shook her head.
âYou don't know everything.â
She reached into her coat and pulled out an old photograph.
It showed my mother standing beside a stranger.
A man in his thirties.
I recognized him.
My father.
But this photograph was different.
My father was younger.
My mother was pregnant.
And between them was James Brooks.
On the back were four words:
The night before the crash.
I looked at Melissa.
âWhat happened that night?â
She whispered,
âYour mother told James she was leaving Daniel.â
âWhy?â
âBecause she discovered he was stealing from the company.â
I clenched my fists.
âAnd my grandfather stopped her?â
âNo.â
She looked straight into my eyes.
âHe helped her.â
That didn't make sense.
âThen why did they fight?â
âBecause James wanted to protect you.â
âFrom what?â
âFrom your father.â
The words hit me.
âWhat did Daniel want?â
Melissa's eyes filled with tears.
âHe wanted control of the company.â
âHe already had a position.â
âNot control.â
She looked at the mansion.
âYour grandfather planned to remove him.â
I felt dizzy.
âAnd my mother?â
âShe was supposed to testify.â
âAbout what?â
Melissa whispered,
âFraud.â
A car door slammed in the driveway.
Everyone turned.
Daniel Brooks had arrived.
He looked at Melissa.
Then me.
Then the photograph in my hand.
His face hardened.
âYou weren't supposed to find that.â
I stared at him.
âWhat wasn't I supposed to find?â
He said nothing.
I stepped forward.
âThe photograph.â
Still nothing.
âThe account.â
His silence answered me.
Then he looked at Richard.
âYou have no idea what James was preparing to do.â
Richard responded coldly.
âWe'll learn.â
My father turned toward me.
âNathan, your mother died because of this family.â
âWhat does that mean?â
He looked at me.
And for the first time, his eyes held something that wasn't anger.
It was grief.
âYour grandfather wasn't trying to protect you from me.â
He swallowed.
âHe was trying to protect you from the man who actually killed your mother.â
âWho?â
My father stared toward the trees.
May you like
Then whispered,
âVictor Hale.â
