Chapter 13 - The Man Who Knew My HusbandVictor sat behind reinforced glass.

He looked nothing like the monster I'd imagined.
That made him worse.
He had gray hair.
A clean shirt.
Calm eyes.
He smiled when I entered.
"Emily."
I hated hearing that name.
"My name is Elena."
"Your name is whatever they told you."
I sat down.
"Why did you choose my daughters?"
He leaned forward.
"I didn't."
"You knew where they were."
"Yes."
"You sent the man."
"No."
"Then why were they targeted?"
He smiled.
"Because someone was trying to force your family into the open."
"What family?"
"Yours."
I stared.
"Explain."
He tapped the glass.
"Ask your husband about the company."
I said nothing.
"Ask him why someone registered a corporation under his name."
"Someone stole his identity."
Victor smiled.
"No."
My stomach tightened.
"Then what?"
"He signed the papers."
I froze.
"What?"
"Years ago."
"That's a lie."
"Is it?"
I stood.
He leaned back.
"You married Daniel because you loved him."
"Yes."
"You never asked what he did before you met."
"I know what he did."
"Do you?"
Victor slid a photograph toward the glass.
It showed Daniel.
Not twelve years ago.
Fifteen years ago.
Standing beside Victor.
My husband.
With him.
I felt like the floor had disappeared.
"No."
Victor's voice was quiet.
"He worked for me."
I couldn't breathe.
"He says he never knew you."
Victor smiled.
"Then ask him why I have photographs."
I left the interrogation room.
Daniel was waiting outside.
One look at my face and he knew.
"What did he say?"
I held up the photograph.
Daniel stopped breathing.
"Where did you get that?"
"Victor."
He closed his eyes.
"Elena..."
"You worked for him."
"No."
"You're in the photograph."
"I was undercover."
I stared.
"What?"
Daniel took a breath.
"I was investigating Victor."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I was protecting you."
The phrase again.
Protecting.
Everyone had used it.
Everyone had lied.
"You knew who I was."
"Yes."
"You knew about my parents."
"I knew they were hiding something."
"You knew Victor was my biological father."
"I suspected."
"And my daughters?"
Daniel's face broke.
"I never knew they were targets."
I wanted to believe him.
Then Officer Harris came running.
"Elena."
"What happened?"
"Your mother disappeared."
My heart stopped.
"How?"
"She was released into protective custody."
He looked at Daniel.
"Someone inside the department helped her."
Then he handed me a note.
May you like
It contained one sentence.
She has the children.
