Chapter 15 - The Secret Lily RememberedThree months later, Mercer Holdings collapsed.

Federal investigators seized nearly everything.

Daniel was indicted.

Victoria was facing multiple charges.

Ryan entered a plea agreement.

Marcus disappeared before trial.

And Emily came home.

For the first time in eight months, I woke up in a house that didn't feel haunted.

Lily slept in the room next to mine.

Grace survived her injuries.

She had become family.

My mother slowly recovered.

For a while, I believed it was over.

I was wrong.

The first sign came on a quiet Sunday morning.

Lily was drawing at the kitchen table.

I walked behind her.

“What are you drawing?”

She covered the paper.

“A secret.”

I smiled.

“Secrets are dangerous.”

She looked up.

“Mommy says this one is important.”

My heart stopped.

“Your mother told you what?”

Lily pointed to the drawing.

I looked.

It showed our house.

Emily.

Me.

Grace.

Lily.

And another person.

A tall woman standing behind us.

Her face had been crossed out.

“Who is that?”

Lily shrugged.

“I don't know.”

“Have you seen her?”

She nodded.

“When?”

“Before I met you.”

My pulse accelerated.

“Where?”

“In the room under Grandma's house.”

I froze.

“What room?”

“The room where they kept the babies.”

My blood turned cold.

I crouched beside her.

“Lily, what else do you remember?”

She looked at me.

“Six babies.”

I swallowed.

“What happened to them?”

“They weren't babies.”

I stared.

“What?”

Lily's voice became strangely calm.

“They were drawings.”

I didn't understand.

She continued.

“Grandpa showed them to me.”

“Your grandfather?”

She nodded.

“He said the babies were never real.”

I felt the room tilt.

“What did he mean?”

Lily reached under the table.

She pulled out a small black notebook.

I had never seen it before.

“Grandpa gave me this.”

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

Page after page contained names.

Dates.

Accounts.

Photographs.

But the final page contained a message.

The Mercer fortune was never the prize.

Below it:

The real prize is control of the government contract buried inside the trust.

I stared at the words.

Fifty million dollars had been a distraction.

The true fortune was worth billions.

And whoever controlled the trust would control a secret government technology program.

Then I saw the final name.

The person who had funded the entire operation.

My breath stopped.

It wasn't Daniel.

It wasn't Victoria.

It wasn't Marcus.

It wasn't Ryan.

It was my grandfather.

Alive.

Watching us from across the kitchen.

I slowly turned.

An elderly man stood in the doorway.

My grandfather smiled.

Lily ran toward him.

“Grandpa!”

I couldn't move.

He looked at me.

“You finally found the truth.”

Emily appeared behind me.

Her face went white.

“Nathan…”

My grandfather raised one hand.

“Don't be afraid.”

Then he smiled at Lily.

“She remembers everything.”

I stared at the old man who was supposed to have died fifteen years ago.

“You staged your own death.”

“Yes.”

“You created all of this.”

“Yes.”

“You manipulated Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“You used Lily.”

His smile faded.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“I protected her.”

“From what?”

He pointed toward the television.

Every news channel had just broken into an emergency broadcast.

The president was speaking.

Behind him stood military officials.

Then the screen showed a classified image.

A young girl.

A biometric scan.

A genetic sequence.

And beneath it, one sentence:

MERCER PROJECT: PHASE TWO ACTIVATED.

Lily looked at the screen.

Then she whispered:

“Daddy…”

I turned toward her.

“What?”

She pointed at the image.

“That’s me.”

The room went silent.

My grandfather smiled.

And for the first time, I understood.

The fifty million dollars had never been about money.

The inheritance had never been about an inheritance.

And Lily had never been just a little girl caught in a family war.

She was the reason the war had started.

And now that everyone knew she was alive…

the real war was only beginning.
