Chapter 14 - No one moved.Ryan looked from Emily to Victor.

Victor's confidence had vanished.

For the first time, Ryan saw fear in the old man's eyes.

That told him everything.

The recording had not gone according to plan.

Ryan turned to Emily.

“Who do you remember being?”

Emily shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Victor stepped forward.

“You know.”

Ryan raised the gun.

“Don't.”

Victor stopped.

Emily closed her eyes.

Memories came in fragments.

A girl running through a hospital corridor.

A locked room.

A woman screaming.

Victor shouting.

Daniel crying.

Ryan's mother holding her hand.

And a tiny baby.

One baby.

Not two.

Emily opened her eyes.

“I remember Lena.”

Ryan stared.

“Your sister?”

“Yes.”

“What happened to her?”

“She died.”

Victor's face hardened.

Emily looked directly at him.

“You killed her.”

Victor said nothing.

Emily continued.

“Then you transferred her memories into me.”

Victor finally spoke.

“You were seven.”

“I know.”

“You survived.”

“Because my sister saved me.”

Ryan felt something shift.

The project had started with Lena.

Not Lily.

Not Grace.

Lena had been the first.

Emily had carried Lena's memories for twenty years.

Then Victor repeated the experiment with Lily.

But something changed.

The transferred memories didn't remain separate.

They merged.

Ryan suddenly understood the connection.

Lena.

The seven children.

The twins.

Noah.

All of them contained fragments of each other.

Victor had spent decades building a single artificial identity from stolen memories.

Ryan looked at the three children.

“You made one person out of them.”

Victor smiled weakly.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because one day, people will die.”

Ryan stared.

“And you wanted to stop death.”

Victor nodded.

“I wanted consciousness to survive.”

Ryan looked at him.

“You murdered children.”

Victor's expression didn't change.

“Sacrifices.”

“No.”

Victor's voice hardened.

“Research.”

Ryan stepped closer.

“You're insane.”

Victor smiled.

“Perhaps.”

Then Noah stood.

“Dad.”

Everyone turned.

Noah walked toward Victor.

Victor frowned.

“Sit down.”

Noah kept moving.

Ryan raised the gun.

“Don't hurt my son.”

Noah stopped beside Victor.

Then reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small cassette tape.

Ryan recognized it.

His mother's handwriting.

Noah looked at Victor.

“You forgot this.”

Victor's face drained of color.

“What is that?”

Noah looked at Ryan.

“Mom gave it to me.”

Ryan froze.

“Emily?”

Noah shook his head.

“Your mom.”

Ryan stared.

“My mother?”

“She visited me.”

Ryan felt dizzy.

“That’s impossible.”

Noah shook his head.

“She told me to wait until Dad came.”

Victor lunged.

Ryan fired into the ceiling.

Victor stopped.

Noah threw the tape toward Ryan.

Ryan caught it.

Victor screamed:

“No!”

Ryan found an old recorder on the desk.

He played it.

His mother's voice filled the room.

“Ryan, if you hear this, don't trust Victor's version of the experiment.”

A pause.

“He believes memories make a person.”

Another pause.

“They don't.”

Ryan looked at the children.

His mother continued.

“A person is not a collection of memories.”

“They are the choices they make.”

Ryan's eyes filled with tears.

The recording went on.

“Lena chose to protect Emily.”

“I chose to protect Ryan.”

“And one day, Lily will choose to protect Noah.”

Ryan turned toward Lily.

The girl's face changed.

She looked at the other girl.

The two stared at each other.

Then Lily whispered:

“It's time.”

The lights went out.

Emily grabbed Ryan's arm.

A scream came from the room.

When the emergency lights activated, Victor was on the floor.

The children were gone.

Ryan ran to the corridor.

Doors were slamming.

Footsteps disappeared into the dark.

Then Noah appeared.

“Dad!”

Ryan grabbed him.

“Where are Lily and the other girl?”

Noah pointed.

“They went to the memory room.”

Ryan looked down the hall.

The steel door opened by itself.

Inside was a machine.

Cables.

Monitors.

A single chair.

Ryan saw Lily sitting in it.

Victor stumbled in behind them.

“No!”

Ryan grabbed him.

“Stop!”

Victor screamed.

“She's going to erase herself!”

Ryan froze.

“What?”

Victor pointed toward Lily.

“She is carrying every memory.”

Ryan stared.

Lily looked at him through tears.

“Daddy.”

Ryan stepped closer.

“I'm here.”

“I don't want to forget you.”

“You won't.”

The other girl stood behind her.

“I can take them.”

Lily shook her head.

“No.”

Victor screamed.

“Do you understand?”

Ryan looked at the machine.

“What happens if she doesn't?”

Victor whispered:

“All the memories collapse.”

Ryan understood.

One mind.

Multiple identities.

The only way to save the children was to separate them.

But the machine had been designed to do the opposite.

Ryan looked at Emily.

“Can we reverse it?”

Emily stared at the controls.

“Maybe.”

Victor laughed.

“You don't know how.”

Emily looked at him.

“I know enough.”

She reached for the controls.

Victor lunged.

Ryan stopped him.

The machine activated.

The room filled with white light.

Lily screamed.

The other girl screamed.

Noah collapsed.

Emily shouted instructions.

Ryan held Noah.

Then the monitors displayed thousands of memories.

Faces.

Hospitals.

Rooms.

Children.

His mother.

His own childhood.

Emily.

Daniel.

Everything.

Then one final image appeared.

A newborn baby.

Lily.

And another newborn beside her.

Ryan stared.

Two babies.

Two bracelets.

Two heartbeats.

The detective had been wrong.

There had been twins.

But the DNA was identical because Victor had cloned them.

Ryan turned toward Emily.

“They were identical clones.”

Emily nodded.

Victor started laughing.

“Now you understand.”

Ryan looked at him.

“You created them.”

Victor smiled.

“Yes.”

“And Grace?”

Victor's smile disappeared.

“She was the original.”

Ryan froze.

“Original?”

Victor nodded.

“Lily was the copy.”

Silence.

Ryan looked at the children.

Then he heard a tiny voice.

“Daddy…”

Grace stepped forward.

She was crying.

“I remember everything.”

Victor whispered:

“No.”

Grace looked at Ryan.

“I remember what he did.”

She pointed at Victor.

“And I remember what Mom did.”

Ryan turned toward Emily.

Grace's last words nearly broke him.

“But most of all…”

She looked at Noah.

“I remember who my real father was.”

Ryan stared.

“What?”

Grace whispered:

May you like

“Not you.”

The machine exploded.
