Chapter 12: The Person Who Stole My Identity

The document on Ray's phone blurred in front of me.
Not because I couldn't read it.
Because my mind refused to accept it.
My name.
My information.
My identity.
All of it was there.
But I had never seen that document before.
I had never signed anything.
I had never requested a financial review.
I had never asked anyone to decide whether I was capable of controlling my own life.
Yet somehow, according to the paper in front of me...
I had.
A cold feeling moved through my body.
Someone had stolen more than my money.
They had stolen my voice.
"What happens if they approve it?"
My question came out quietly.
Nobody answered immediately.
That silence scared me.
Finally, Ray spoke.
"If the court believes you are unable to manage your inheritance, control could be transferred to a legal guardian."
My eyes moved slowly around the room.
"A guardian."
Marcus's face tightened.
"Yes."
I looked at him.
"Someone else gets control of my life."
He nodded.
"Yes."
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
My whole life, people had been making decisions for me.
My mother.
Marcus.
My father.
Everyone said it was because they loved me.
Now someone was trying to make it official.
Someone wanted a judge to say I wasn't capable.
"Who filed it?"
Ray looked back at the document.
"There's a name attached."
Everyone leaned closer.
Then Ray said:
"David Carter."
The room went silent.
Of course.
Of course it was him.
The man who stole money.
The man who manipulated my father.
The man who tried to destroy Marcus.
The man who had been standing in front of me pretending he wanted me to know the truth.
He wasn't trying to reveal the story.
He was trying to write the ending.
I looked at David.
"You filed this."
He didn't deny it.
"Yes."
Everyone reacted at once.
Marcus stepped forward.
"You tried to take control of her?"
David looked at him.
"Careful."
"No."
Marcus's voice became dangerous.
"You don't get to threaten her anymore."
David smiled.
"Still playing the hero."
Marcus clenched his fists.
But I stopped him.
"No."
Everyone looked at me.
I stared at David.
"I want him to explain."
David tilted his head.
"Explain what?"
"Everything."
I stepped closer.
"Why?"
The question seemed to surprise him.
"Why do you need my inheritance?"
His expression changed.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Resentment.
"You think this is about money?"
I frowned.
"Isn't it?"
David laughed quietly.
"No."
He looked around the garage.
"That is what your mother never understood."
"Understood what?"
"That money was never the thing I wanted."
His eyes moved toward the motorcycle.
"I wanted what she built."
I stared.
"The company."
"Yes."
The answer came instantly.
"My sister had something special."
David's voice became bitter.
"She had ideas. Talent. Trust."
He looked at the documents.
"And everyone trusted her."
A strange emotion crossed his face.
Jealousy.
"You know what it's like to spend your entire life standing next to someone who gets everything?"
Nobody spoke.
"Your mother was loved."
He looked at me.
"She was respected."
"She had a family."
His voice lowered.
"And I was always the second choice."
I felt no sympathy.
Not after everything.
"That doesn't give you the right to destroy her."
David looked at me.
"Maybe not."
A pause.
"But it explains why I did."
The honesty was disturbing.
People usually hid behind excuses.
David didn't.
He believed he was justified.
And that made him more dangerous.
"So you stole from her."
"Yes."
"You lied."
"Yes."
"You destroyed my family."
His eyes narrowed.
"Your family was already broken."
My anger exploded.
"Because of you."
"Because of everyone."
The answer shocked me.
He pointed around the room.
"Your father left."
Marcus looked away.
"You lied."
Marcus stayed silent.
"Your mother hid things."
Linda lowered her eyes.
"Everyone made choices."
He looked at me.
"I'm just the only one willing to admit mine."
The words were cruel.
Because they contained a small piece of truth.
Everyone had made mistakes.
But only one person turned those mistakes into weapons.
"You still filed the petition."
David nodded.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because I knew you would choose Marcus."
I froze.
"What?"
He smiled.
"You always did."
I frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
"Even when you were a child."
David stepped closer.
"Your mother loved you. Marcus loved you. Everyone loved you."
His voice became bitter.
"But nobody noticed me."
I stared.
This wasn't just greed.
It was years of anger.
Years of feeling invisible.
And somewhere along the way...
He decided hurting everyone else would make him feel seen.
"You don't want my inheritance."
I said slowly.
"You want revenge."
For the first time, David didn't answer.
And I knew I was right.
Then my father spoke.
"You were always jealous."
Everyone looked at him.
David smiled.
"Careful, Daniel."
My father stepped forward.
"No."
His voice was stronger than before.
"I'm done being afraid of you."
The garage became still.
"You manipulated me."
David's expression changed.
"You made me leave my daughter."
"You made me believe I was protecting her."
My father's eyes filled with anger.
"And while I was gone..."
He looked at me.
"You destroyed everyone I loved."
David stared at him.
"You weren't strong enough."
My father nodded.
"Maybe."
A pause.
"But Emma is."
The words surprised me.
Because for the first time...
My father wasn't speaking for me.
He was believing in me.
David looked uncomfortable.
Then his phone rang.
Everyone turned.
He checked the screen.
The confidence disappeared.
"What is it?"
He didn't answer.
He read the message again.
Then again.
His face changed.
Not fear.
Panic.
"What happened?"
David slowly lowered the phone.
Nobody had ever seen him like that.
Ray noticed.
"What did you get?"
David ignored him.
But it was too late.
His hand was shaking.
I looked at him.
"Who messaged you?"
No answer.
"David."
Finally, he spoke.
Quietly.
"Someone found the second account."
Everyone froze.
"What second account?"
David looked at the motorcycle.
Then at me.
"The account your mother created as a backup."
My heart started racing.
"Backup for what?"
David's eyes met mine.
"For the day everyone thought they knew the truth."
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
He didn't answer.
Instead, he turned toward the exit.
Marcus moved.
"Where are you going?"
David stopped.
Then said:
"Running."
Nobody expected that.
Because David Carter had always looked untouchable.
But now he looked like a man who knew something worse was coming.
"Who found the account?"
I asked.
David looked back.
And for the first time...
He looked afraid of someone else.
"Your mother."
I froze.
"That's impossible."
He shook his head.
"No."
His voice was barely a whisper.
"Because your mother planned for this."
The garage lights flickered again.
Then Ray's phone received another notification.
A new email.
From an unknown sender.
The subject line:
THE FINAL RECORDING OF ELIZABETH CARTER
My mother's name.
My hands went cold.
Ray opened it.
There was only one sentence.
If Emma is reading this, then I am already gone. But the person who betrayed us is still alive.
Everyone stared.
Then another line appeared.
And it is not David.
The garage went silent.
My heart stopped.
Because after everything...
After every accusation.
After every secret.
After every lie.
The biggest question remained.
May you like
Who was the real traitor?
And why had my mother spent her final days protecting them?
