Chapter 13 - Noah's Secret

The Seven-Year-Old Had Been Protecting Something
I looked at Noah.
He was sitting in a hospital chair eating crackers.
“Me?”
Elena was on speakerphone.
“Yes,” she said.
Noah's face tightened.
“What did I do?”
Elena spoke gently.
“You didn't do anything wrong.”
“Then why does Michael want me?”
“Because he thinks you have something.”
Noah stared at his hands.
I knelt beside him.
“Noah, what does Michael think you have?”
He whispered,
“The blue box.”
I looked at Mom.
“What blue box?”
Noah reached into his backpack.
He pulled out a small blue plastic container.
I'd seen it before.
I thought it held crayons.
Inside was a USB drive.
My heart stopped.
“Where did you get that?”
Noah looked embarrassed.
“Michael.”
“When?”
“A long time ago.”
“What did he tell you?”
“He said never open it.”
“Why?”
“He said it was Daddy's.”
I froze.
Noah had never called my biological father Daddy.
Not since he was born.
He meant our father.
He had found something connected to my father.
Detective Reed secured the drive.
The forensic team examined it.
The files were encrypted.
But the archive had a clue.
One word.
EMILY.
My eighteenth birthday was six months away.
We couldn't wait.
The judge authorized an emergency opening because of the attempted attack.
The archive contained video.
Financial documents.
Emails.
Photographs.
And a list.
Names of people connected to Michael.
Some were already dead.
Some had disappeared.
Some were still active.
One name appeared repeatedly.
VICTORIA CARTER.
Michael's sister.
The woman in the photograph.
She wasn't merely his sister.
She was the person who handled the forged documents.
She created fake signatures.
Fake identities.
Fake legal filings.
Michael controlled the people.
Victoria controlled the paperwork.
Together they had built something far larger than a family scam.
Then we found the last folder.
ROBERT BENNETT.
Inside was a video recorded the night before his death.
My father looked exhausted.
He spoke directly to the camera.
“Emily, I don't know when you'll see this.”
I started crying before he said anything else.
“If Michael entered your life, I failed to stop him.”
My mother covered her face.
“But there is something you need to understand.”
He leaned closer.
“Your mother is not weak.”
Mom looked up.
“She was frightened.”
A pause.
“That is different.”
Then Dad said the words that broke me.
“She will blame herself.”
Mom started crying.
“Don't let her.”
The video continued.
“Michael may tell you your family was broken before he arrived.”
Dad shook his head.
“He breaks things and then offers to repair them.”
I looked at Mom.
Dad smiled faintly.
“Emily, protect Noah.”
I swallowed.
“Not because he's a target.”
Dad continued.
“Because he remembers.”
The video ended.
Noah stared at the screen.
“What does that mean?”
Marcus answered.
“He remembers things adults ignore.”
The investigators replayed the video.
Then they found audio hidden inside the file.
A second voice.
Michael.
He was in the same room.
Arguing with Dad.
The recording was muffled.
But one phrase was clear.
“Give me the trust.”
Dad refused.
Then Michael said:
“If you don't, I'll take your family apart.”
The audio cut off.
My mother covered her mouth.
Detective Reed looked toward the archive.
Then the final file appeared.
It contained a map.
Several locations.
Storage units.
Banks.
Houses.
And one final address.
Michael's current location.
An abandoned farmhouse outside town.
Police moved immediately.
But by the time they arrived, the farmhouse was empty.
Except for one thing.
A table.
Two chairs.
A camera.
And a note taped to the chair closest to the door.
EMILY, SIT DOWN.
The detective stared.
“No.”
He ordered the team to search remotely.
The camera switched on.
A live feed appeared.
Michael was sitting somewhere else.
He looked directly into the camera.
“Hello, Emily.”
I froze.
“You wanted answers.”
His face was calm.
“So did your father.”
He leaned forward.
“I can give you the final one.”
Then he smiled.
“Your father's accident was not the beginning.”
His expression changed.
“It was the end of a deal.”
I felt my heart stop.
Michael continued.
“And Sarah knows who made that deal.”
The feed ended.
Everyone looked at Mom.
She was trembling.
“I don't know what he's talking about.”
May you like
But then Noah whispered,
“Yes, you do.”
