Chapter 13 - I reached Gideon before he lost consciousness. He grabbed my arm.

His eyes were wide.

For the first time, the man who had terrified everyone else looked terrified himself.

I dragged him toward a gap in the ice.

Nathan pulled us both out.

Gideon coughed violently.

The metal case remained in his hand.

I took it.

“You nearly died for this.”

He stared at me.

“You have no idea what it contains.”

“I know it's important.”

“No.”

His voice shook.

“It destroys everything.”

Nathan opened the case.

Inside was a single drive.

And a photograph.

My husband.

Gideon.

Richard.

And a fourth man.

I recognized him immediately.

Dr. Samuel Voss.

The psychiatrist.

But he was much younger in the photograph.

Taken twelve years ago.

On the back were four words.

THE DOCTOR STARTED EVERYTHING.

Nathan looked at me.

“Your husband suspected Voss before the poisoning.”

I felt sick.

“What did he do?”

Nathan accessed the drive.

There were records.

Drug purchases.

Medical experiments.

Patient files.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Voss had been testing cognitive-decline treatments on vulnerable patients.

He had manipulated diagnoses.

He had created symptoms.

He had stolen medical data.

My illness had been one experiment.

My husband's death had become another opportunity.

Gideon hadn't designed everything.

Voss had.

Gideon had simply financed him.

I turned toward Gideon.

“You let him poison me.”

“Yes.”

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“And Derek?”

“Useful.”

“You destroyed your own family.”

Gideon stared at the snow.

“My family destroyed itself.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“You did.”

For once, he had no answer.

Then Nathan's phone rang.

Federal agents had captured Amanda.

Captain Ross was alive.

Richard was being transported to testify.

And Dr. Voss had been arrested at the airport.

Everything was collapsing.

Except for one thing.

The drive contained one final folder.

HARPER FOUNDATION: BENEFICIARY FILE.

I opened it.

There was my name.

Then Derek's.

Then Amanda's.

Then another name.

A name I had never seen.

ELENA HARPER.

I frowned.

“Who is Elena?”

Derek came closer.

He saw the name.

Then stepped back.

“No.”

“What?”

He shook his head.

“That can't be.”

“Derek.”

He stared at me.

“Elena was my sister.”

I froze.

“You never had a sister.”

“She died.”

“When?”

“Before I met you.”

I stared at him.

He looked confused.

“Mom told me she died as a baby.”

I looked at Nathan.

He was already searching.

Within minutes, we found a birth record.

Female.

Born twenty-nine years ago.

Mother:

Amanda Vale.

I looked at Derek.

“Your sister is Amanda's?”

He nodded slowly.

Then I remembered something Amanda had said.

Her sister.

The sister she claimed Gideon had threatened.

Could Elena still be alive?

Nathan found another record.

A current passport.

A current photograph.

A woman in her late twenties.

Alive.

Living under another name.

Location:

Switzerland.

My heart pounded.

“Why was she listed as a beneficiary?”

Richard answered.

Because she wasn't just a beneficiary.

She was the legal successor to the hidden technology portfolio.

My husband had planned to give it to her.

He had discovered that Gideon wanted control through Derek.

So he created another heir.

One Gideon did not know existed.

Elena.

But why hide her from me?

Richard looked ashamed.

“Because your husband believed anyone who knew about her could put her in danger.”

I closed my eyes.

My husband had spent years building secret protections.

He had been fighting a war I hadn't known existed.

Then the final file opened.

A video.

My husband appeared one last time.

He looked directly into the camera.

“If you're watching this, Evelyn, then Derek is probably with you.”

I looked at my son.

My husband continued.

“You may hate him.”

Derek began crying.

“He deserves consequences.”

A pause.

“But don't let Gideon turn him into the man he believes he is.”

I felt tears burn my eyes.

My husband continued.

“Derek was never beyond saving.”

The video ended.

Silence.

Derek dropped to his knees.

“I don't deserve your forgiveness.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

He looked up.

“You don't.”

His face collapsed.

“But you may earn it.”

He nodded.

Then a federal agent entered.

“We need to move.”

“What happened?”

“Gideon is gone.”

Again.

But this time there was something different.

The agent handed me a photograph.

A train station.

A woman boarding a train.

Amanda.

She had escaped custody.

And beside her was Elena.

My granddaughter.

I stared at the photograph.

The woman my husband had hidden for twenty-nine years was now walking directly into the hands of the woman who had tried to kill me.

Amanda knew who Elena was.

May you like

And she knew exactly what the inheritance required.

The final heir had to be alive.
