Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT THE DINER BURNEDI dragged Hannah through the hidden doorway.

Bullets struck the wall above us.
We ran down the staircase.
Tony was shouting upstairs.
Then glass shattered.
Smoke filled the lower corridor.
“Mom!”
“Keep moving!”
We reached the back exit.
Tony appeared coughing.
“Let's go!”
We ran into the alley.
Three SUVs sped away before the police arrived.
But Carter's Table was burning.
Flames climbed through the windows.
My life's work disappeared behind orange fire.
Hannah sobbed.
“Mom…”
I stood frozen.
Twenty-three years.
All of it.
Gone.
Tony touched my shoulder.
“They can't take everything.”
I looked at him.
“They just did.”
He shook his head.
“No.”
He reached into his jacket.
“I saved this.”
He pulled out the hard drive.
I stared at him.
“What?”
Tony smiled faintly.
“You gave me the wrong box.”
I almost laughed.
Then I realized.
The hard drive in my pocket was a decoy.
Tony had the real one.
“You knew?”
“I've worked for you nineteen years.”
He shrugged.
“I know when you're hiding something.”
For the first time that day, I smiled.
Then a police cruiser stopped.
Daniel stepped out.
He looked at the burning diner.
Then at me.
“It's worse than I thought.”
“Tell me everything.”
He looked at Hannah.
“Not here.”
We drove to an old church outside downtown.
In the basement, Daniel finally opened the truth.
“The Holloways operate through three layers.”
“Business.”
“Politics.”
“Enforcement.”
“Margaret controls all three.”
I stared at him.
“And Grant?”
“Grant is the successor.”
“No.”
Daniel nodded.
“He's been groomed since childhood.”
“Then why marry Hannah?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Because of what your husband left behind.”
“The hard drive?”
“That, and something else.”
“What?”
Daniel looked at Hannah.
“Her blood.”
Hannah went still.
“What?”
Daniel continued.
“Your husband wasn't just investigating Holloway finances.”
“He was investigating a biological inheritance.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“Margaret believes Hannah possesses a genetic marker linked to an old family trust.”
I almost laughed.
“A genetic marker?”
“The trust was established generations ago.”
“Millions are involved.”
“Billions.”
Silence.
“The Holloways don't just want Hannah's marriage.”
“They want legal control of her identity.”
Hannah whispered:
“Why?”
“Because your father's family hid a fortune.”
I stared.
“My husband's family?”
Daniel nodded.
“He wasn't who you thought he was either.”
That was the moment I realized my entire marriage had been built on secrets.
The man I'd loved.
The family he'd escaped.
The enemies he'd feared.
All of it was connected.
I asked:
“Where is Caleb?”
Daniel finally answered.
“Mexico.”
“Bring him back.”
“I tried.”
“What happened?”
“He refused.”
I stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because he believes you're safer without him.”
I laughed bitterly.
“I'm standing in the ashes of my diner.”
Daniel looked down.
“That's why he changed his mind.”
He handed me a phone.
“There is a number.”
“Call it.”
I dialed.
A man answered.
His voice was older.
But I knew it instantly.
“Evelyn?”
I couldn't speak.
Hannah covered her mouth.
“Caleb?”
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
Hannah started crying.
“You're alive.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Why did you disappear?”
“Because Margaret killed everyone who tried to protect me.”
Daniel interrupted.
“We're out of time.”
Caleb went silent.
Then he said:
“Evelyn, listen carefully.”
“What?”
“Don't fight Margaret.”
“Everyone keeps telling me that.”
“Because none of you understand what she has.”
“What?”
“A recording.”
“Of what?”
“My father.”
My stomach dropped.
“Your father?”
“My father was Margaret's husband.”
“What about him?”
Caleb breathed slowly.
“He ordered the hit on your husband.”
Hannah gasped.
I closed my eyes.
“Why?”
“Because your husband stole something.”
“What?”
Caleb said:
“The Holloway inheritance.”
I looked at Daniel.
He nodded.
Caleb continued.
“Your husband didn't hide the fortune.”
“He moved it.”
“To where?”
Silence.
Then Caleb said:
“Your diner.”
I stared at the burned building.
Impossible.
The diner.
The one thing I had protected for twenty-three years.
The thing they had tried to steal.
The thing they had just burned.
I whispered:
“What did he hide?”
Caleb answered:
“The original trust.”
Then I heard a click on the line.
A second voice entered.
Margaret.
“Hello, Evelyn.”
I froze.
She laughed softly.
“You finally found the truth.”
Then she said:
“Unfortunately, so did I.”
The call ended.
Daniel looked at me.
“How did she intercept the call?”
I stared at my phone.
Then I realized.
“She didn't.”
“What?”
“She called me from another phone.”
Daniel's face changed.
“She was here.”
We turned toward the basement entrance.
The door was open.
And on the floor was a handwritten note.
18 HOURS.
