Chapter 4 - VANESSA'S SECRETThe gunshot came before the lights returned.

Bang.

The sound shook the room.

Vanessa screamed.

I dropped behind a shelf.

Ryan crawled beside me.

Daniel vanished.

When the emergency lights flickered on, the room had changed.

Daniel was gone.

The back door stood open.

And one of the shelves had been overturned.

A red stain spread across the floor.

Ryan stared at it.

“Is that blood?”

I looked closer.

Not blood.

Wine.

Someone had shattered a bottle during the chaos.

But there was something else.

An envelope.

Burning.

Ryan grabbed it.

“Dad!”

I took it from him and crushed the flame.

Only half the paper remained.

Three words were still visible.

TRUST NO ONE.

Underneath them was a date.

September 14.

Tomorrow.

I looked at Ryan.

“What happens tomorrow?”

“I don't know.”

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“I do.”

We both turned.

Her face was expressionless.

“The transfer.”

Ryan looked at her.

“What transfer?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“The final transfer.”

My stomach tightened.

“Explain.”

She looked at me.

“I wasn't supposed to tell you.”

Ryan whispered:

“Vanessa.”

She turned toward him.

“Enough.”

For the first time since I'd known her, she looked directly at my son without fear.

“You almost killed your father.”

Ryan looked stunned.

“So?”

“So you don't get to keep pretending this is about a house.”

He stepped toward her.

“What did you tell him?”

“The truth.”

“What truth?”

Vanessa looked at me.

“Ryan owes someone fifteen million dollars.”

Silence.

Ryan's face hardened.

“You promised me you wouldn't say anything.”

“I promised too many things.”

I stared at my son.

“Fifteen million?”

Ryan looked away.

“It's complicated.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“It isn't.”

I held up the documents.

“You borrowed money.”

“It was an investment.”

“You lost it.”

“No.”

“You were laundering money.”

Ryan said nothing.

Vanessa began crying.

“It wasn't supposed to go this far.”

I looked at her.

“Who are they?”

She whispered:

“Sterling.”

I turned toward Ryan.

“Who is Sterling?”

His jaw tightened.

“Daniel lied.”

“Answer me.”

“I don't know.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You know exactly who he is.”

Ryan glared at her.

“Stop.”

She didn't.

“Tell him.”

Ryan moved toward her.

I stepped between them.

“Don't.”

He stopped.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa said:

“Sterling Development isn't a company.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“It's a network.”

“Of what?”

“People who buy distressed properties. Companies. Politicians. Judges.”

Ryan looked at her.

“You're insane.”

“No.”

She wiped her tears.

“I've seen the documents.”

My blood ran cold.

She continued.

“They don't steal houses by force.”

“How?”

“They make people sign.”

I looked at Ryan.

“And your role?”

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Ryan finds the pressure points.”

“What pressure points?”

“Debt. Family. Addiction. Affairs. Secrets.”

I felt sick.

“My son blackmailed people.”

Ryan's voice rose.

“I never hurt anyone.”

“You hit me thirty times.”

“That was different.”

I stared at him.

“Different?”

He looked away.

Vanessa stepped toward me.

“Leonard, he didn't marry me because he loved me.”

Ryan froze.

“What?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“He needed access to your records.”

My heart stopped.

“What records?”

“The Mercer Holdings files.”

Ryan rushed toward her.

I blocked him again.

“You married my son to get into my company?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I was recruited.”

“By Sterling?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

She looked at me for several seconds.

Then whispered:

“Because your wife owed them something.”

The room went silent.

I felt as though the floor had disappeared.

“My wife?”

“Evelyn.”

“Don't say her name.”

“She was involved.”

“You're lying.”

“She was.”

I grabbed the table.

My wife had been dead for nine years.

For nine years I'd believed she had left me with only grief.

Only memories.

Only a lifetime of love.

Now Vanessa was telling me she'd been hiding something.

I reached for the old files.

“Show me.”

Vanessa pointed toward the archive.

“Bottom drawer.”

I pulled it open.

There was a single folder.

EVELYN MERCER.

Inside was a photograph of my wife standing beside Daniel Cross.

I stared at the image.

On the back was a handwritten sentence.

If Leonard ever opens this file, tell him I did it to protect our son.

I sat down.

Ryan stared at the photograph.

“I didn't know.”

I looked at him.

“You didn't know what?”

“That Mom…”

He stopped.

A sound came from the corridor.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Someone was coming.

Ryan grabbed my arm.

Vanessa stepped backward.

The lights flickered.

Then a woman's voice echoed from the darkness.

“Leonard.”

I froze.

It was impossible.

I knew that voice.

I'd heard it every night for forty years.

My wife's voice.

“Leonard…”

Ryan whispered:

“Dad?”

I couldn't move.

The footsteps stopped.

A figure appeared.

A woman in a dark coat.

She stepped into the emergency light.

And for one impossible second, I believed I was looking at a ghost.

Then she raised her face.

And I realized the truth was even worse.

She wasn't Evelyn.

But she looked enough like her to make my blood turn to ice.

She smiled.

“My name is Claire.”

May you like

Then she said the one thing only my wife should have known.

“Your father wasn't killed in an accident.”
