Chapter 12 - The Fire Beneath the HouseSmoke filled the basement within seconds.

Daniel shouted for everyone to move.

Security rushed upstairs.

Guests were being evacuated.

The orchestra stopped.

The ballroom dissolved into panic.

I grabbed the ledger.

Vivian grabbed the missing page.

Marissa pulled Ethan toward the stairs.

Dad stayed behind.

I turned.

“Dad!”

He was staring at the hidden room.

Thomas was gone.

“Where is he?”

Dad pointed toward the back wall.

“There's another passage.”

“What?”

“Your grandfather built one.”

My chest tightened.

“Where?”

Dad ran to a section of stone.

He pressed his hand against it.

A panel opened.

Behind it was a narrow tunnel.

Thomas disappeared into the darkness.

Dad followed.

I followed both.

The passage descended beneath the estate.

Smoke poured through the vents.

At the end was a steel door.

Thomas was trying to open it.

Dad shouted,

“Thomas!”

Thomas turned.

His face was covered in soot.

“You can't stop this.”

“You started the fire.”

Thomas looked at him.

“I started the fire to destroy the records.”

“You'll kill everyone.”

Thomas smiled bitterly.

“Then there won't be records.”

Dad lunged at him.

They crashed into the wall.

The steel door slammed open.

Inside was another room.

Boxes everywhere.

Paper.

Photographs.

Financial files.

The true archive.

The fire had already reached the far end.

I stared.

This was what my grandfather had been protecting.

Not one ledger.

An entire history.

Years of transactions.

Property transfers.

Fake contracts.

Bribes.

Names.

I grabbed the nearest box.

A photograph fell out.

My father.

Thomas.

My grandfather.

Together.

Twenty years earlier.

They were standing in front of a building.

On the back:

First partnership.

I turned another page.

There were documents showing that Dad had transferred money from my grandfather's development fund.

Thomas had covered it.

Then both had created new companies to hide it.

The debt had grown.

The house had always been the final solution.

Not because they had a legal claim.

Because they believed I would eventually surrender.

Thomas saw me holding the papers.

“Give me that.”

“No.”

He stepped forward.

Daniel restrained him.

Dad dropped to his knees.

He looked at me.

“I can explain.”

“You've had ten years.”

He said nothing.

Then alarms sounded upstairs.

Real alarms this time.

Sprinklers activated.

Water rained through the archive room.

Boxes collapsed.

Paper floated across the floor.

Thomas screamed.

“No!”

He tried to save the files.

I watched him.

For years, my family had treated money like oxygen.

Now they were watching theirs dissolve in water.

Sirens approached outside.

Vivian looked at me.

“I called emergency services.”

Thomas stared at her.

“You planned this.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You did.”

Security led him away.

Dad remained on the floor.

Marissa stood beside Ethan.

She was crying.

“I didn't know it would go this far.”

I looked at her.

“You knew enough.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

Then Ethan said something.

“Claire.”

I looked at him.

“I need to tell you about Marissa.”

Marissa turned.

“Ethan.”

He continued.

“She didn't know about the fire.”

“I know.”

“No.”

His face was pale.

“She didn't know about the second plan.”

“What second plan?”

Ethan looked at his father.

“Thomas had another way to take the house.”

My stomach tightened.

“How?”

“He had already filed a claim.”

“What claim?”

“Fraudulent ownership.”

I stared at him.

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

“Based on what?”

Ethan looked at me.

“A private sale agreement.”

I felt cold.

“My father signed a sale agreement.”

“Yes.”

“To sell my house.”

“Yes.”

“With my forged signature.”

“Yes.”

“And where is it now?”

“In court.”

The sirens grew louder.

Vivian closed her eyes.

“They moved faster than we thought.”

I looked toward the estate.

The wedding decorations were still glowing upstairs.

The flowers were still standing.

May you like

The cake was still untouched.

And somewhere outside, a legal filing existed claiming my house had already been sold.
